Victorian Pair of Sterling Silver Three-Light Candelabra
By Richard Hodd & Son
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A magnificent, fine and impressive pair of large antique Victorian English sterling silver three-light Corinthian column candelabra; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. These magnificent antique Victorian sterling silver three-light candelabra have a Corinthian column style form. Each impressive candelabrum retains the original hallmarked detachable push fit scrolling arms fitted to a circular rounded boss. The plain boss is embellished with contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting in a ducal cornet an oak tree fructed and penetrated transversely in the main stem by a frame saw*. The branches (labra) are entwined with embossed scrolling leaf decoration. Each branch supports a Corinthian style capital which retains the original detachable hallmarked push fit sconce and drip pans embellished with bead decorated borders. The central Corinthian style capital and drip pan of each candelabrum are mounted on a swirl and petal decorated bulbous knop. Each central light is fitted with the impressive original hallmarked push fit flame style snuffer. These three-light candelabra can be used as candlesticks once the push fit arms are detached. The candlesticks have impressive Corinthian style capitals supported by large and exceptional Corinthian style columns onto fine and impressive square bases ornamented with applied bead decoration. Either side of the large bases are embellished with the identical contemporary bright cut engraved crest to that of the boss. The candelabra/candlesticks have weighted solid hallmarked sterling silver bases; this is a sign of quality in such pieces. The components of these magnificent candelabra were made by Richard Hodd I and Richard Hodd II of Richard Hodd & Son in 1877; these items will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system one base is struck with the date letter ‘B’ and the remaining articles bear ‘C’. These large antique candlesticks are an exceptional example of their type. * This crest pertains to the Clan Hamilton, a Lowland Scottish clan; also known as the House of Hamilton. Dimensions: Height to top of snuffer 63cm / 24.8". Height to top of labra sconce...
