This exceptional antique German sterling silver cup & cover has a bulbous circular shaped form onto a shaped pedestal foot. The lobed body of the cup is embellished with chased decorated scenes incorporating: a putto raising a glass and playing a musical instrument, a stag, a unicorn and an elephant. The upper portion of the body is encompassed with a paralleling cast and applied stylised rope twist border, accented with a collet set round faceted cut gemstone to each incurve, with a scrolling leaf decorated bracket to the underside. This impressive presentation cup retains the original hallmarked cover, ornamented with a continuation of the leaf bracket to each incurve, in addition to a reflection of chased decorated scenes. The cover is surmounted with an exceptional cast figural finial comprised of a putto figure holding a glass and cluster of grapes, sat to a large plain ball. The upper portion of the stringed instrument is surmounted with a swept oval capital, encompassed with embossed concave batwing decoration. The capitals retain the original detachable hallmarked push fit sconces, each embellished with thread decorated borders to the rim. The column of each candlestick features details replicating the opposing scrolling frame and five-strings of the musical instrument. Each oval swept base is embellished with fluted batwing decoration, accented with further thread decoration to the rim. These antique candlesticks have weighted bases and retain the original hallmarked silver lined underside. Such large candlesticks, modelled in the form of lyre, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. The surfaces of the napkin ring and egg cup are plain and embellished with applied crown motifs incorporating the date ‘1937’ and initials ‘GVI’*. The plain rounded egg cup is ornamented with an elongated indented border to the pedestal and is supported by a stepped octagonal foot, all in the Art Deco style. The napkin ring has a plain quadrilateral shaped form with a convex curved anterior surface, bearing the aforementioned motif. The spoon is embellished with the engraved initials ‘GVI’ amidst collared bands to the stem and features an impressive crown shaped terminal. The reverse surface of the spoon is plain and features a tapering heel to the bowl. The pieces of this antique Art Deco style christening set are fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, secured with a push fit catch. The anterior maroon leatherette surface of the box cover is embellished with a central cream panel encompassed with a gold scrolling border and accented with the royal cypher depicting ‘GVIR, 1937’ below the royal coronet. The interior of the cover bears the retailer’s mark ‘By appointment to H.M The King, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112 Regent Street, London, W.1’. This impressive christening set was crafted by the renowned and highly collectable silversmith Robert Edgar Stone; the posterior surface of the napkin ring bears R. E. Stone’s signature in addition to the full hallmarks. The subtly domed hinged cover of the box retains the original transfer depicting portraits of King Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark in addition to the coat of arms of Leeds. A fine antique Austro-Hungarian silver and enamel cigarette/card case; part of our continental silverware collection This fine antique Austro-Hungarian silver and enamel cigarette/card case has a rectangular form with rounded edges. The front cover is embellished with an enamel panel depicting two Japanese ladies playing traditional Japanese instruments, the koto (13 stringed zither) and the shamisen (3 stringed guitar-like instrument). The players are seated on the ground in an outdoor scene with traditional Japanese lanterns hanging from tree branches overhead. The sides of this cigarette case and posterior cover are plain and unembellished. The case is fitted with a push fit catch which when released reveals the hallmarked gilt interior of the hinged compartments. The hallmarks to the interior of this impressive case include: Silver quality/purity: Dianakopf mark (800 standard, 800/1000) Assay mark: L (Ljubljana, Slovenia) This variation of the Dianakopf mark was used from 1872-1922, determining the date of this piece as circa 1900.
