This vintage Edwardian style button tufted chesterfield has been gently used and shows no sign of abuse and very little use. Fashioned as if it came from an English interior circa 1900 but updated to a more casual and modern aspect with the cream linen upholstery and the limed wooden feet. This small detailed work made between 1890 and 1900 is skillfully painted representing a court lady in regal costumes being attended to by a small child carrying a bolt of silk cloth. This centered in a medallion where the raised decoration is heavily embellished with gold and patterned details. The round outer area is done in a cobalt blue with more goldwork designs and the interior of the box holds small painted objects as symbols of refinement and or beauty. The box is signed by the painter's hand but as yet we have not translated or matched it to a specific maker's work. Wares of this type are most often produced in the city of Kagoshima in Kyushu province during the Meiji period and reflects the export industry designed to cater to western tastes but not particularly bought by Japanese citizens. This fine painted decorated planter in the manner of Angelica Kauffman was created in England circa 1890 to 1900. Hepplewhite in style the planter was made in England during the Edwardian era. This time saw a great rise in revival styles and culminated with the out break of the first world war. Hepplewhite design is most often associated with fine detail contrasting wood veneers and inlay , delicate painted details and a definite reference to historical precedents. Referencing Kauffman herself the piece is reminiscent of works in her historical painterly style. She i known to have painted a number of commissions on furniture while living in England as well a being one of only two female founding members of the Royal Academy. She classified herself as a painter of historical imagery but is also known for her many significant painting and portraits and scenes of late 18th century upper class life. This pair of modernist low tables designed by Wolfgang Hoffmann for Howell were made circa 1938 and are in excellent almost original condition. The chrome is completely original and has almost no pitting or discoloration. The lacquer appears to be from the 1960s and we have had it polished out to maximize its shine and luster and is in good order as well. The tables retain original Howell labels to the underside. Wolfgang Hoffmann is the son of Joseph Hoffmann. Born in Vienna and trained to be working under his father's staff he married and moved for his early carrier to New York. His wife and he opened a design studio to create interior furniture and design for the modernist movement and was featured in House and Garden in 1929 with his custom furniture designs. In 1932 he was asked to contribute to the design and color scheme of the Chicago Worlds Fair as well as design the furniture and layout of the exhibits lumber industry house. This pair of very dramatic tall cast & tole neoclassical sinumbra style lamps with frosted etched glass shades appear to be antique from the 1820s however are made circa 1930. Cast in heavy brass and tole painted they are most probably European in origin and are in excellent condition. The base is decorated with encircling putti sandwiched in between two architectural brass circular panels. A reeded tole column rises up out of acanthus leaves and is topped by a capital decorated with acanthus leaves. This lovely old tray made circa 1860 is inlaid with mother of pearl and tole decorated with flowers set into a lustrous lacquer surface applied to the tinware tray. The flowers are painted in a lively and realistic manner and the tray is further decorated with a meandering border of flowers and vines in gilding and colors along the edge of the dished section of the tray and then again on the broad flat area of the tray's edge. The stand in a Regency form is also decorated in similar colors and with gold. The tray has a label from the 1840s affixed to the reverse that says it was restored and most likely at that time the stand was fashioned and painted to accompany the tray.
