This pair of very dramatic tall cast & tole neoclassical sinumbra style lamps with frosted etched glass shades appear to be antique from the 1820s however are made circa 1930. Cast in heavy brass and tole painted they are most probably European in origin and are in excellent condition. The base is decorated with encircling putti sandwiched in between two architectural brass circular panels. A reeded tole column rises up out of acanthus leaves and is topped by a capital decorated with acanthus leaves. This Carcel mechanism bears the name of its inventor Guillaume Carcel who, in 1800, developed his oil lamp (of rapeseed, for example) comprising a suction-repressing pump driven by a clockwork motor, which ensured the constant supply of the wick. The tank is no longer on the side: it is now under the burner. This floor lamp has a cylindrical wick burner and a movable glass holder to adjust the flame. The glass-chimney is throttled at the level of the flame. The Carcel lamp, deemed expensive and fragile, was reserved for a wealthy clientele. His widow and his son-in-law Mr. Zier, still held in 1821, the workshops and the shop at 8 rue de l'Arbre-Sec in Paris.
