French 19th Century Tole Sinumbra Lamp from the Estate of Paul and Bunny Mellon

About the Item

This fine classical carcel lamp would originally have had a burner and glass shade but now is fitted for electricity and will require a tole or cloth shade. Designed as a classical fluted column resting on a block base and plinth the lamp is made of tin and cast bronze or brass. The bronze was originally gilded but now has rub thru and patina. The painted surface is original and in very good condition. The lamp has been rewired with French silk wrapped wire and has had the interior mechanical changed but we have retained to old vintage cluster for continuity. Once used in Oak Springs Farm, the Charlottsvile home of the Mellons, this lamp was once published in a magazine pertaining the Mellon's life at home.
