Late 19th Century English Labeled Papier Mache Tray on Later Stand

About the Item

This very nice old papier-mache tray produced approx 1885 comes from England while the stand is a modern addition creating a useful and attractive small coffee table. The base is made to imitate bamboo and is lacquered black with gilded lines between the segmented turnings The tray is labeled to the verso by Wm. S. Burton listed at 39 Oxford Street, London. The design of a border of pink and white flowers amount gilded leaves and vines is then interspersed with numerous small gilded dots creating a continuous wide meandering rim around the trays black background with the edge finished off in a single border in gold as well.

    This lovely old tray made circa 1860 is inlaid with mother of pearl and tole decorated with flowers set into a lustrous lacquer surface applied to the tinware tray. The flowers are painted in a lively and realistic manner and the tray is further decorated with a meandering border of flowers and vines in gilding and colors along the edge of the dished section of the tray and then again on the broad flat area of the tray's edge. The stand in a Regency form is also decorated in similar colors and with gold. The tray has a label from the 1840s affixed to the reverse that says it was restored and most likely at that time the stand was fashioned and painted to accompany the tray.
