Large Japanese Meiji Period Open Bronze Censor

About the Item

This cast bronze censor is from Japan and was made circa 1880. Raised up on three legs which issue from demons mouths the container is cast with reliefs of sparrows in flight in a foliated and wooded landscape. All cast in fine detail with high and low relief giving the piece a realistic effect and retaining a rich warm color to the patina. Because of its verticality, the piece has a great impact and presence while not being too large around.
