The seated animal is in an attacking position, teeth bared, ears flattened, and paw extended to strike the ball. The situation is skillfully captured, and the overall arrangement of materials and colors is harmonious. The jade edging is interrupted at the front and back by black stripes in marble, and the panther has a very beautiful patina. This is a cast-iron figural eagle doorstop, circa early 20th century. The eagle is depicted with wings spread wide, perched and mounted to a square marble base. The eagle retains traces of its original gilt surface and is embossed with “F.O.E.” at its midsection, possibly referring to the Fraternal Order of Eagles.   The eagle is both the national bird and the national animal of the United States. The eagle motif has been widely used throughout American history, most notably as part of our Great Seal. He devoted himself mainly to interior decoration. His works were profoundly marked by a French influence. He exhibited in Paris in 1895 where he received an honorable mention.
