Louis XV Decorative Objects

LOUIS XV STYLE

The style of 18th-century French furniture was guided by the court. When Louis XV, who reigned from 1715–74, focused royal life on the smaller salons of Versailles rather than its grand chambers, it transformed the aesthetics away from the imposing and angular furniture that characterized the style of Louis XIV. A broader focus on comfort and more delicate forms define antique Louis XV furniture, with nature-inspired carvings, wood inlays, curved cabriole legs, asymmetrical shapes and rounded oval seat backs. The furnishings changed throughout the king’s life, as he ascended to the throne as a child and then grew to establish his own tastes.

Pieces like the bergère, an upholstered armchair with a wide cushion that fit the flowing dresses in fashion at the time, reflected this more informal court. Introduced at the start of Louis XV’s reign, bergère chairs in this style were deeper and broader than other chairs of the period.

Louis XV tapestries and carpets tended to be floral and colorful, and design elements were borrowed from Asia. Dutch-born cabinetmaker Bernard van Risenburgh brought lacquer techniques influenced by Japan and China into his luxuriously made furniture. Along with its fine details, the furniture of the era also featured new innovations including mechanical devices. Jean François Oeben, a royal cabinetmaker, created such intricate pieces as a mechanical table for Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress. It involved a sliding top and a writing surface that extended from its marquetry panels.

During the later years of Louis XV’s reign, there was a shift from the ostentatious rocaille style, part of the exuberantly decorative Rococo movement in Europe for which designers such as Nicolas Pineau and Juste-Aurèle Meissonier are known. The style under Louis XVI would return to boxier forms, but with a neoclassical touch inspired by the ancient world.

Pair of Large Louis XV Style Gilt-Bronze and Samson Porcelain Candelabra

By Samson & Cie

Located in London, GB

A pair of large Louis XV style gilt-bronze and Samson porcelain candelabra French, Late 19th century Measures: Height 68cm, width 54cm, depth 36cm Crafted with great artistry and skill by the Samson porcelain manufactory in late nineteenth century France, these exceptional candelabra feature superb full-length porcelain subjects set within elaborate gilt-bronze lighting branches. Made in the Louis XV style, each pair, symmetrical to each other in design, consists of five-lighting branches, a mount for the porcelain, and elegantly sculpted bases. The porcelain figures are that of a man and woman playing musical instruments, wistfully gazing towards each other while they stroll and play; he plays a variation on the bagpipes, probably the French cabrette, while she plays a large guitar-like stringed instrument. They stand 68cm in height and bear the Samson mark to the underside. Beautiful pieces, the porcelain figures of which can stand separately, they are wonderful examples of French antique...

A 19th C. Ormolu Mounted Viennese Enamel Tri-Fold Watteau Scene Screen

Located in New York, NY

A large 19th C. Ormolu Mounted Viennese Enamel Tri Fold Watteau Scene Screen. This tri fold screen is formed with three hinged panels, each centered by a hand painted Viennese enamel plaque depicting figures in pastoral settings inspired by Watteau scenes. The central panel shows a musician entertaining seated companions beneath tall trees, while the side panels each depict a courting couple in a wooded landscape. Every plaque is enclosed within an ormolu frame cast with Rococo scrolls, shells, acanthus leaves, floral sprays, and pierced ornament. The cresting, apron, and scrolling feet continue the same decorative vocabulary across all three panels. The screen is fitted with finely painted Viennese enamel plaques produced using the detailed overglaze enamel technique associated with nineteenth century Viennese workshops. These plaques were created on metal grounds and fired repeatedly to achieve layered color and precise figure painting. The composition is presented within gilt ormolu mounts that complement the enamel surfaces without covering the painted borders. During the nineteenth century, Viennese workshops produced enamel objects featuring pastoral subjects derived from eighteenth century French paintings...
