Neale & Co. Creamware Set of Ten Plates, Puce Feather Edge, Classical Ruins Circa 1780–1785 Each plate is circular with a shaped rim molded with a feather edge, the molded barbs picked out in puce enamel in short radiating strokes and the edge itself gilded, with unusually strong remnants of the original gilding surviving. The well is transfer-printed in puce with a classical capriccio: a ruined arch on Corinthian columns, overgrown with foliage and carrying a broken entablature, stands before a crenellated wall pierced with arched openings, with a colonnade and a second arch beyond and a distant church spire below a hill. The foreground is strewn with fallen column drums, capitals and blocks of masonry, among which two small figures rest at the right. The reverse of each plate is impressed Neale & Co. and carries an old collector's paper label inscribed in ink Neale & Co. 1778–1788, Chaffers page 704; two plates also retain the blue and silver foil retailer's label of Shreve, Crump & Low Co., Boston. Dimensions: Diameter: 8 3/4 inches (22.2 cm) Height: 1 inch (2.5 cm) Marks: Impressed Neale & Co. on the reverse of each plate, a mark used between 1778 and 1795. This pair of Spode shell-shaped dishes was made in England around 1820 and printed in the classic orange and blue palette associated with Imari decoration. The lively color combination immediately gives the pair decorative authority, while the sculptural shell form adds movement and visual interest. The printed design shows a stylized garden scene with blue rockwork, flowering peonies and chrysanthemums in orange, and bamboo rising behind the flowers. The limited palette of orange and blue keeps the composition clear and balanced, with the strong blue elements anchoring the design and the warm orange flowers providing contrast. Spode was one of the most important English pottery manufacturers of the early nineteenth century and played a central role in adapting Asian decorative traditions for the English market. The orange and blue color scheme reflects the long influence of Japanese Imari porcelains that began arriving in Europe during the seventeenth century. The molded shell form enhances the design by creating gentle curves that catch the light across the surface, adding dimension to the printed decoration. Dishes of this shape were often used for serving desserts or sweetmeats and were also valued for display. Vintage ceramic vessel or vase features pitcher shaped body with decorative handle. The lower half of the body is lightly faceted, resulting in octagonal outline when the vessel is viewed from above; the upper half has rounded form with lightly flared rim. The minimal handle is accented with tear or water drop shaped element on top. The vase is decorated with complex blue and white glaze with foaming effect; the free-flowing pattern of larger bubble elements adds tactile, textural quality to the unusual glaze. The vessel is signed by the artist on the bottom; same signature can be seen on the bowl in E. John Bullard Collection of Bates College Museum of Art. Provenance: the vessel was acquired at the arts, antiques, and Folk Art collector estate in Western New York state. Clara Katherine Nelson (1890–1984) was a renowned American cubist painter and ceramic artist. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design and taught at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. Nelson was invited by Charles Fergus Binns to teach painting and drawing at Alfred University at the School of Ceramics in 1920, replacing Marion Fosdick, who shifted to teaching modeling and pottery. Nelson worked with Binns and Fosdick to develop pioneering curriculum for functional ceramic education and started to work in pottery and ceramics herself; in 1927 they were joined by Charles Harder, who brought in the “New Bauhaus” aesthetic and studied with Lásló Moholoy-Nagy in Chicago. Fosdick, Harder and Nelson created the Ceramic Art curriculum throughout the 1930s and oversaw its transformation into Industrial Ceramic Design (from 1939–1951), and on into a more Bauhaus-inspired Ceramic Design (1951–1965). Nelson's students included Jane and Gordon Martz, Glidden Parker, Herb Cohen...
