A lovely mid-century Bavarian porcelain ginger jar with gold trim and gilt details by Hertel-Jacob Porzellan (German, 1906-1979). This large ginger jar is ornately decorated with a highly detailed romantic figurative landscape scene, in which three men depicted in gold enjoy an opulent picnic of wine, meat, and fruit under a tree, in front of a large medieval castle complete with a canon and canon balls. A gold leaf motif decorates the backside of the piece. The signature "Fuchs-Nadler" can be found within the picnic scene, underneath the tray of food and wine. Stamped on bottom with mark "Hertel-Jacob Porzelan / Bavaria Germany", and the serial number 1266. A very fine Aesthetic Movement Royal Worcester triangular shaped jug hand painted with flowers and butterflies and made for Bailey Banks & Biddle in Philadelphia dated 1882. The porcelain jug is very reminiscent of the designs of Christopher Dresser with its angles and patterning and is formed in the shape of a triangle on a slightly wider foot with a decorative scroll and loop terminal handle and with a shaped top rim with a raised pouring spout with a low relief embossed stylized floral motif below and with an embossed floral edge border around the upper rim. The jug has a Z pattern border around the foot and is hand painted with floral and butterfly patterns around the body in colored enamels on ivory ground. The handle, upper rim, the embossed design and Z patterning around the foot are all painted in a satin brown color and highlighted with gilding which has also been used to outline the hand painted patterning to the body. The jug has a puce printed maker’s mark to the base along with a date code for 1882 and has puce printed retailers mark for Bailey Banks & Biddle. British 1810-1820 Clobbered wares deserve better as they are historically very interesting. So lets call them George the IV or Regency Taste redecorated porcelain. And leave the clobbered behind us as it does no justice to what they are at all. Its not that because we live in a time were these super funky colours are out of taste that we should hate on these pieces. A short history! During the early 19th century, the Prince Regent (later King George IV) played a key role in cultivating a taste for the exotic Orient among the British elite, influencing interior design during the Regency era. His lavish projects, such as the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, epitomized this fascination. The Pavilion, with its blend of Indian, Chinese, and Gothic elements, became a symbol of the Prince’s extravagant taste. The interiors featured Chinese wallpaper, Indian textiles, and oriental furniture, reflecting the era’s growing interest in Chinoiserie and other oriental-inspired designs. This trend extended to the decorative arts, where clobbered Chinese porcelain—originally blue-and-white pieces—was reimagined with bright reds, golds, greens, and dragons to cater to the new European tastes. These colorful repainted pieces symbolized wealth, sophistication, and an affinity for the exotic, perfectly complementing the bold and opulent interiors of the time. The dragon, a powerful symbol in Chinese culture, was a recurring motif in these porcelain pieces, further aligning with the Regency’s romanticized view of the Orient. George IV’s penchant for luxury, eccentricity, and vibrant decoration influenced the wider aristocratic society, and clobbered porcelain...
