Huge thick glazed pottery vase by one of the famoust Swiss pottery artists André Freymond dating to the 1950s.

Striking serving set of tureen with lid and underplate features ceramic or porcelain body with faux bamboo decor, forming a strong geometric trim in Chinese Chippendale style. Warm, buttery yellow colors of the bamboo trellises with mocha brown accents are meticulously hand-painted with great detail; the faux bamboo trellis, done in relief, stands out on white background. The lid has an opening for the serving utensils. The tureen and the underplate are marked with "Made in Italy" on the bottoms; the pieces are missing the distributor stickers. The Chinese Chippendale style was popular in Italy in 1960s, and fine examples of Italian designs were produced by multiple companies, including the luxury furniture company Vivai Del Sud, which made both furniture and decor items, such as lamps, in this style. We're attributing the set to Mottahedeh, who sourced high quality Italian majolica in similar styles; the pieces will be simply marked ITALY or "Made in Italy" and Mottahedeh will add their paper stickers. As the pieces are quite old, the stickers often get lost or destroyed. The tureen with its classic shape, detailed decor, and historically inspired design will blend quite well with many china and serverware patterns, both in traditional and more modern styles. Overall, the piece is surprizingly reminiscent of the beautiful Vannerie Cottage pattern by Alberto Pinto, inspired by Jean-Michel Frank’s Bauhaus rattan...

This large hand-painted charger was made by Mintons Art Pottery Studio of Kensington Gore, London. The studio traces its origins to the renowned earthenware and fine bone china factory Minton, located in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire England. Colin Minton Campbell, descendant of founder Thomas Minton, took over company management in 1858 and went on to establish Mintons Art Pottery Studio in 1871 for the purpose of hand decorating pottery and tiles. The studio initially operated under the direction of painter and book illustrator William Stephen Coleman and drew upon the talents of artists studying at the Kensington's National Art Training School, now known as the Royal College of Art, as well as those of well-regarded Continental artists. The company was short lived as it was destroyed by an accidental fire in 1875 and was not rebuilt. This large earthenware charger has been hand-painted in polychrome enamel and depicts two young children at play in the nursery. Later in life Karnes returned to the more biomorphic forms she explored earlier in her career in the late 1940s-early 1950s of which this is an exceptional example. Bio. from wikipedia. Karen Karnes (November 17, 1925 – July 12, 2016) was an American ceramist, best known for her salt glazed, earth-toned stoneware ceramics. Early life Karnes was born on November 17, 1925 in New York City,[2] where she attended art schools for children. Her garment worker parents were Russian and Polish Jewish immigrants, and the family lived in the Bronx Coops. Karnes applied for and was accepted to the High School of Music & Art. As a child she was surrounded by urban realities and visual influences, but she claims that her parents' old-world ideals kept her grounded. At Brooklyn College she majored in design and graduated in 1946. After graduating, she studied abroad in Italy, where she continued to study ceramics. After returning from Italy, Karnes began a graduate program at Alfred University, but left before completing her degree to work at Black Mountain College. Black Mountain College Karnes first encountered Black Mountain College in 1947, where she took a summer design class with Josef Albers. In 1952, she and her husband David Weinrib (whom she later divorced) moved down to North Carolina to become potters-in-residence at the Black Mountain College. While at Black Mountain College, Karnes and Weinrib became acquainted with Merce Cunningham and John Cage, and later lived with them at the Gate Hill Community. This is a very rare ironstone vase, in the Chinese style, all hand painted in the coloured dragon pattern, made by the Mason's factory in the early 19th century. Both the vase shape and the pattern are very rare. The vase has a bottle shape with a fairly tall neck, having two dolphin head handles, with attached loops. (NOTES ON SHAPE This vase style is a copy of a much earlier Chinese bronze vase shape produced in the Ming, Hongwu period of 1368 - 1398, which had similar decorative animal head side handles with loops. ( See the book Chinese Ceramics by He Li, page 216, published by Thames & Hudson. ). Also On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 204; The square handles and rings illustrate the metal origins of the shape of the vase.
