An elegant French side chair from around 1860, with a richly carved dark wooden frame, decorative metal ornaments and fresh red velvet upholstery. It is a characterful example of the eclectic, opulent furniture made in France during the Second Empire, and it brings instant warmth and a touch of theatre to any room. The tall back is framed by carved uprights and topped with a shaped crest rail, which carries a set of initials, a lovely personal detail that hints at the chair's history. Small metal ornaments are set into the frame, catching the light against the dark wood. The seat rests on turned front legs, typical of the period's revival of Louis XVI forms.
