Hand-Carved Sculptural White Oak Dining Chair W/ Plant-Based Finish

Hand-Carved Sculptural White Oak Dining Chair W/ Plant-Based Finish

By Nathaniel Wojtalik, Cultivation Objects

Located in Brooklyn, NY

Piece and Quiet by Nathaniel Wojtalik is a series that draws upon the literary, musical, and cinematic idea of découpé, or cut-up. The technique of découpé stems from the notion that a text, musical score, or image could be cut up and rearranged to create a new body. Off-cuts and partially completed prototypes float around Wojtalik's studio; some more machined and worked than others, many just raw materials laying in their natural form. Wojtalik practices design by intuition: limited, but simultaneously expanded within the constraints of what is salvaged. Each piece is unique and hand made in the Brooklyn studio, so no two will look exactly alike, but all will look close to as pictured. All materials are locally sourced and finishes are derived from non-toxic plant based...

1980s Memphis Style Slipper Chairs by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin, a Pair

1980s Memphis Style Slipper Chairs by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin, a Pair

By Milo Baughman, Memphis Milano

Located in Roanoke, VA

Baughman was inspired by the courageous young avant-garde designers known as the Memphis Group that burst on to the works stage in 1981 with a total disregard for the traditions and design tenants of restrained, idealized Modernism, Baughman designed a small collection of 11 colorful, post-modern pieces and convinced Coggin to put the collection into production by 1984. The unexpected designs made a splash upon their debut, with critics praising Baughman’s graceful and carefully considered take on the wild Italian ‘new design.’ The wider American audience and Coggin’s well-to-do yet conservative clientele did not take to Baughman’s experiment in exercising complete creative control. ''Only galleries bought it,'' Baughman told the NYT in the months after the collection’s release. Pieces from the 1984 Prisma collection are extremely difficult to come by. Literature: Oscar Fitzgerald, American furniture: 1650 to the Present , 2017. P 517; CH 19 Postmodern and AvantGarde Furniture...

One of the most desirable today is the rocker. This rare early example of the RKR dates from the first few months of production as evidenced by the base which has supporting struts that extend from the front legs all the way to the back, crossing under the seat.
