Set of 4 LOV Oosterbeek Chairs by J.A. Muntendam, 1920s, Hague School, Modernist
By L.O.V. Oosterbeek
Located in CULEMBORG, GE
Listed is a rare set of Modernist dining chairs, attributed to J.A. Muntendam — who was the artistic director of L.O.V. Oosterbeek in the late 1920s. L.O.V. is the abbreviation of Labor Onia Vincit which means 'Work conquers all’. In the days Dutch company L.O.V., based in Oosterbeek, was quite a famous factory. Historically they played a significant role with their progressive principles: L.O.V. was for example the first factory to introduce the modern 8-hours working day. L.O.V. designs toggle from being quite traditional to extremely modernist — in every piece of their furniture you feel that the spirit of Modernism...

Two Chairs by Dom Hans van der Laan, The Netherlands 1960s
By Dom Hans van der Laan
Located in Utrecht, NL
This set of chairs was originally designed by the Dutch Benedictine monk and architect, Dom Hans van der Laan for the Abbey Church of St. Benedictusberg located near the Dutch town of Vaals. These easy chairs are in an untouched condition. They are made of pine wood and feature copper nails, giving these pieces an understated, rustic look. The pair is entirely painted grey, including the nails. This specific colour was carefully selected by Whim van Hoof to resemble the original shade as closely as possible. The main focus of van der Laan’s design was functionality and rationality, which is reflected in the openings on the sides and on the backs serve the purpose of joining multiple pieces together, and lifting them. Van der Laan was a leading figure in the traditionalist movement, the Bossche School, that held these values as well. These characteristics make these chairs charming, while also being beautiful pieces of Dutch design history. Although Dom Hans van der Laan left a small body of work behind, his legacy is highly regarded in the world of architecture. The St. Benedictusberg Abbey in Vaals and its interior quickly became his masterpiece at the age of 53. This model is still found in the Dutch church named Sint Willibrorduskerk in Almelo, for which it was possibly designed for in 1964. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some small marks and scratches. Dimensions: 25.59 in W, 26.77 in D, 35.43 in H; Seat Height 15.94 in 65 cm W, 68 cm D, 90 cm H; Seat Height 40.5 cm About the designer: Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991) was the ninth of the eleven recorded children of Leiden architect Leo van der...

Aluminum Concretion Shelf by Studio Julien Manaira
Located in Geneve, CH
Aluminum concretion shelf by Studio Julien Manaira. Dimensions: 123 x 47 x 141 cm. Materials: aluminium and stainless steel. The concretion project consists of sand-casting aluminium in a base of stainless steel tubes to form objects. The tubes are placed and cut to certain heights according to what the gross object’s dimensions will be. The shapes of each horizontal surface are then prepared by hand without following any precise plan. Each pouring of aluminium is at the same time forming surfaces of the object as well as connecting elements together. The aim of this process is to create a strong relation between two types of metal: the industrial stainless steel and the brut hand-cast aluminium, that comes visually as an extension of the first one. The two types of metal have two opposite relation to time, the industrial tube can’t be placed in time, only resulting from a continuous chain of production when the hand-cast part captures the very moment of formation of the object. This opposition is not meant to compare which materiality is best, but to enrich each other by their difference, and therefore stimulate the Julien Manaira (France, 1992) successively studied industrial design (La martinière, Lyon) and fine arts -option product design (Esad, Reims). in 2015 he came to Amsterdam to follow a temporary master program (Materialisation in Art and Design) at the Sandberg Institute where he graduated in 2017 before opening his studio in the same city. His graduation project ‘The once liquid plastic’ was awarded by the RADO Star Prize 2017 and the 3rd prize of the Pure Talent Contest at IMM Cologne 2018. In the last years, he exhibited his works in different established and recognized organizations such as Paris Design Week, IMM Cologne, Design Parade Hyères, and Milan Design Week. He was commissioned by different companies, among which Nilufar Gallery, Nubikk, Van Dijk Store as well as private clients. The main focus in his practice is setting processes that allow the manufacturer or him to be mentally and physically involved in the transformation of material towards an object. He believes that this empowerment is a way to engage deeper the audience or user’s perception, and therefore create a stronger connection with the object. Serendipity, combining industrial and artisanal material, are examples of how he aims to create objects that are able to communicate their undergone transformations. Iris Box...
