The peacock collection is truly the summit of mother-of-pearl art that fully expresses the exquisite rainbow shimmering of the nacre. The use of different types of mother of pearl, which are harvested from natural sources such as abalones and clams, maximizes the iridescence while at the same time creating depth and perspective. The collection’s highly elaborate motifs are created through the employment of a variety of sophisticated techniques in mother of pearl art, including coloring and carving, and some of the mother of pearl was sliced as thinly as a thread.
Since the old days, peacocks have been admired for their elegance and glorious feathers in Korea. They symbolize “the beauty of heaven,” “wisdom,” and are said to possess nine kinds of virtues. Thus, people with many talents have often been compared to peacocks.
