French Modernist Art Deco desk by Lucien Rollin, circa 1935, in oak with bronze drawer pulls. This desk is part of an office suite by Rollin (please see #1135 for the entire suite) and is available with or without its matching armless chair. The desk is 51” wide x 31.5” deep x 29.5” high and the open height beneath the apron is 23.5”. Lucien Rollin studied at the Ecole Boulle in Paris. Following his studies Rollin worked in the studio of the Master of Art Deco, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann. Later he returned to the Ecole Boulle while he worked for the architect Michel Roux-Spitz. Rollin participated in Ruhlmann’s Hotel du Collectionneur pavilion at the 1925 Exposition Internationales des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris (now called the 1925 Expo – the exhibition which later launched the term “Art Deco”). In 1928 Rollin set up his own studio and was influenced by a diversity of sources including Ruhlmann, Frank Lloyd Wright, classical Greek and Louis XVI styles. A magnificent set of three French mid 20th century gilded brass marble top nesting tables attributed to Maison Baguès for Parisian design firm Maison Jansen. Finished in luxurious Louis XVI taste, each table graduated in size, having a striking dramatically white veined verde green marble oval shaped top, resting on a triangular shaped patinated gilt metal frame in brilliant bronze dore style finish, adorned in foliate relief trim to apron, floral medallions above tripartite stretcher-joined fluted legs, terminating on tapered feet. Dimensions: (approx) Largest: 17.25"H, 24.25"W, 14"D Since its establishment, circa 1860, Maison Baguès has been an emblem of French elegance and sophistication in luxury interior design, originally the finest lighting, expanding into the finest quality furniture and decorative accessories. Each piece the firm makes is hand-assembled using traditional techniques in order to emphasize the elegant excellence of their detailed artisanal work. Still the epitome of savoir-faire, Maison Baguès’ luxurious pieces are prized for their craftsmanship, beauty and harmony. The master metalsmith Noël Baguès founded the company as specialists in liturgical bronzes, but by 1880 the company had expanded into the production of bronze light fixtures in response to the development of electrical lighting. Carried on by Noël’s son Eugène and grandsons Victor and Robert, Maison Baguès continued to progress, adding intricately detailed iron lighting collections in the 1920s as well as stair banisters, gates and accessory tables. Baguès began selling internationally in the interwar period, expanding the company’s operation to New York, Rome and Cairo. Noted for their high-end handcrafted work, such as complex carved sconces and hand-strung crystal chandeliers, Maison Baguès appealed to an elite clientele. While Baguès’ Art Deco crystal lighting fixtures drew the most attention, the company was also known for bespoke metalwork that drew commissions from important interior designers and decorating firms such as Maison Jansen and Raymond Subes. In 1928, eminent bourgeoisie décorateur Armand-Albert Rateau famously used a selection of Maison Baguès accessories to furnish the townhouse interiors of haute couturist Jeanne Lanvin. A similar model was exhibited at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition. Rare pair of round table made of patinated and gilded bronze with a top veneered with malachite and circled with bronze mounts adorned with ovum and beads. They stands on three patinated bronze feet with lion heads and paws, linked with gilded bronze X braces. Related Works: The feet of these gueridons adopt a sleek design and are adorned with claws and lion heads. Inspired by a well-known model in the Barbedienne Company production and it has been reused many times by his workshop. These gueridons shows how the Barbedienne Company offered a range of furniture from the designs of its decorator Louis-Constant Sévin. He designed this model of gueridon few time after he joined the Barbedienne Company in 1855 and this model can be seen on different interior decorations of the Second Empire. A tripod gueridon with feet like these ones can be seen on a picture showing the cold room of the Pompeiian house built for Prince Napoleon. (see picture attached, photograph by Laplanche J et Cie, between 1860-1866, Musée Carnavalet, Paris, PH15305). Most of the Ancient style furniture was made by Charles Rossigneux (1818-1908) but this gueridon shows that the Barbedienne Company took also part to this work. Biography: Henri Picard was established in Paris, 6 rue Jarente from 1831 to 1839 and then 10 rue de la Perle from 1840 to 1864. He worked on the Emperor Napoleon III’s apartments gilding at the Louvre Palace. His production was in a rich and fine style, like a Japanese style inkwell, or his Pompeian style dining table centerpieces...
