A Large and Impressive Pair of Italian Early 20th Century Rococo-Style Gilt-Bronze Center Tables or Wall Consoles with Marble Tops, attributed to Luigi Ciampaglia, renowned for his leadership at the esteemed Fonderia (Foundry) Chiurazzi di Napoli (Naples). These tables boast intricately cast serpentine gilt bronze frames featuring an ornate apron adorned with bearded male masks flanked by swaged floral garlands, C-scrolls, and acanthus motifs. They stand on four elegantly curved cabriolet legs joined by an 'X' stretcher, all terminating in floral sabots, supporting luxurious veined green Verde Antico marble tops. Both tables are elegantly engraved with "Ciampaglia" on the apron, suggesting they were likely a special private commission by Luigi Ciampaglia, possibly crafted by either the Fonderia Ciampaglia or the Fonderia Chiurazzi. Circa: Naples, 1920-1940. Note: Another example of this model is currently on display at The Miramar Mansion in Newport, R.I. The James Yates console table is part of the Victoria & Albert Museum's permanent collection of British metalwork. While the offered pair of tables are a gilt-bronze version of this model by Yates, the V&A museum holds the original 1840 cast-iron model (Design No. 1148), which is illustrated in Georg Himmelheber’s Cast Iron Furniture. A pair of Victorian cast iron console tables of this model but circa 1842, by James Yates of Rotherham, were sold at Sotheby's London, Sale L13302 on 3 December 2013, Lot 254 for £40,000 ($68,900) Luigi Ciampaglia held the position of head artisan at the Fonderia (Foundry) Chiurazzi di Napoli. Established by Gennaro Chiurazzi (1840–1906), the Fonderia Chiurazzi originated from a modest foundry founded in Naples in 1870. It swiftly gained renown, expanding into a workshop within the Albergo dei Poveri, where a team of skilled craftsmen, known as formatori, diligently produced casts of numerous statues. Over time, the foundry secured the privilege of taking molds from prestigious collections, including those of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, the Capitoline Museums, the Vatican, the Borghese Gallery in Rome, and the Palazzo Pitti and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. This very impressive console table comes from the famous American Country house Blairsden. This house built in Peapack NJ for C. Ledyard Blair and Mrs. Florence Blair between 1898 and 1903. The house was created and decorated by the important architectural firm of Carrere & Hastings. The firm produced many homes, churches, monuments and public buildings for America's gilded age notables. Blairsden boasts extensive landscaped gardens in the manner of the French Baroque in the tradition of Andre Le Notre. The interiors as well where extensively set out and incorporated appropriate French and English furniture complimenting the decorative schemes. No expense was spared to create this house and grounds based on the ideals of Edwardian splendor and the ideal modern residence. This house was listed in 1903 upon its completion in the survey of American Estates & Gardens published by Barr Ferree. While much was spoken of its location, setting, architectural accomplishments and style the summation of the listing called "Blairsden one of the most elaborate and extensive schemes of its kind ever carried out in America." This table was formally part of the dining rooms complete redecoration by the architectural firm carried out in 1913. The room was originally planned around dark paneling and a warm even family-style catering to their children. The new rooms scheme was greatly enlarged and lightened up considerably by extensive plasterwork and painting in the Adams style. This table and a mate was used to center two opposing walls and complimented the inset painted panels and plasterwork ceiling which contained many references to swags, pateria, and other classical motifs. This table has been pictured in several period photographs and the house is extensively spoken of in the comprehensive book published in 2006 by Acanthus Press encompassing the principles ideals and the extent of there work especially in the Beaux-Arts...

A similar model was exposed at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition ( see picture attached) Patinated and gilded bronze gueridon with four paw feet joined by X-shaped stems, attributed to Sévin and Barbedienne. Round green marble top mounted with a bronze rim adorned with oves and pearls motif. Born in 1821 and dead in Paris in 1888, Louis-Constant Sévin was apprenticed to the parisian sculptor Marneuf. In 1839, he joined the sculptor-modelors Phénix and Joyau, as designer, and designed silver-smith’s objects for famous firms like Denière, Froment-Meurice, Morel and Duponchel. During the Revolution in 1848, C. Sévin joined Morel in London, as workshop manager and designed pieces that Morel exhibited in 1851. Back in France in 1851, C. Sévin went to Limoges and designed models for the porcelain factories of Jouhanneaud and Dubois of which many pieces were exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in 1855. From this date on, he worked for Ferdinand Barbedienne as sculptor-ornemanist until the end of his life. Sévin’s works are considerable, he designed furniture bronzes for the « hôtel de La Païva ». At the London Exhibition in 1862, he was awarded a medal « pour l’excellence artistique des meubles qu’il a dessinés et qui sont exposés par Barbedienne » : for the artistic excellence of the furniture he designed and which is exhibited by F. Barbedienne. He won a second class medal at the Union centrale des Arts décoratifs Exhibition in 1863 and was awarded a gold medal as « cooperator ». F.
