An extraordinary fine English victorian marquetry Sycamore, Amboyna, burr-walnut and ormolu-mounted circular tulipwood crossbanding tip-top center table with inlaid decorations depicting wicker baskets full of flowers, vines, butterflies and hummingbirds, in the manner and attributed to Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) after a design by Richard Bridgens, circa London, 1840. Measures: Height: 29 1/4 inches (74.3 cm). Diameter: 53 1/2 inches (135.9 cm). Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) is listed in London Trade Directories of the period in various capacities. He first appears listed at 7 Hanway Street, London in 1805 described as a 'dealer in China and glass' and by 1821 as ' an antique furniture and ornamental furniture dealer'. By 1826 the various facets of the business included 'buying and selling, exchanging and valuing China, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc' Baldock's business seems to have largely involved trading in foreign items and from 1832-1837 he was the purveyor of earthenware and glass to William IV and later purveyor of china to Queen Victoria from 1838 until his death. He is known to have repaired, re-modelled and adapted furniture...

An extremely elegant, rare Regency amboyna and brass inlaid gilt bronze mounted pier table. Provenance Part of Sir William Whitfield Collection. English Regency period, Circa 1815. The raised back with open shelf, surmounted by a pierced anthemion three quarter brass gallery above a rectangular mirror plate, flanked by gilt bronze pierced foliate scrolled supports, over a finely coloured amboyna and banded top above cut brass inlaid frieze drawer decorated with anthemion and flower head motif. The dual tapering scroll supports with palmette lappet surmounts and cut brass inlay terminate on gilt bronze claw feet, flanking a later large mirror plate to the rear, raised on a inverted breakfront plinth base edged with gilt bonze beading. Formerly in the collection of Sir William Whitfield. This elegant Regency pier table is a superb example with its fine quality mounts and distinctive amboyna veneers which are rarely found on furniture of this period. The condition is excellent, having the most wonderful colour and patination to the finest cuts of amboyna that would have been available, during the early 19th century this veneer was thought to be worth more in its weight than gold. This table would have almost certainly been especially commissioned, further research maybe undertaken to find a comparative example and insight to a potential maker. As such pieces in amboyna are far rarer, an example of pier table has yet to be found, but an amboyna sofa table with extremely similar brass inlay and form can be seen in Clifford Musgrave’s book Regency Furniture, published by Faber and Faber in 1961, plate 63. It is from the Royal Collection and the caption includes ‘made about 1816 for Clarement,’ (Claremont) ‘ Esher, Surrey, home of the Princess Charlotte...

A Large and Impressive Pair of Italian Early 20th Century Rococo-Style Gilt-Bronze Center Tables or Wall Consoles with Marble Tops, attributed to Luigi Ciampaglia, renowned for his leadership at the esteemed Fonderia (Foundry) Chiurazzi di Napoli (Naples). These tables boast intricately cast serpentine gilt bronze frames featuring an ornate apron adorned with bearded male masks flanked by swaged floral garlands, C-scrolls, and acanthus motifs. They stand on four elegantly curved cabriolet legs joined by an 'X' stretcher, all terminating in floral sabots, supporting luxurious veined green Verde Antico marble tops. Both tables are elegantly engraved with "Ciampaglia" on the apron, suggesting they were likely a special private commission by Luigi Ciampaglia, possibly crafted by either the Fonderia Ciampaglia or the Fonderia Chiurazzi. Circa: Naples, 1920-1940. Note: Another example of this model is currently on display at The Miramar Mansion in Newport, R.I. The James Yates console table is part of the Victoria & Albert Museum's permanent collection of British metalwork. While the offered pair of tables are a gilt-bronze version of this model by Yates, the V&A museum holds the original 1840 cast-iron model (Design No. 1148), which is illustrated in Georg Himmelheber’s Cast Iron Furniture. A pair of Victorian cast iron console tables of this model but circa 1842, by James Yates of Rotherham, were sold at Sotheby's London, Sale L13302 on 3 December 2013, Lot 254 for £40,000 ($68,900) Luigi Ciampaglia held the position of head artisan at the Fonderia (Foundry) Chiurazzi di Napoli. Established by Gennaro Chiurazzi (1840–1906), the Fonderia Chiurazzi originated from a modest foundry founded in Naples in 1870. It swiftly gained renown, expanding into a workshop within the Albergo dei Poveri, where a team of skilled craftsmen, known as formatori, diligently produced casts of numerous statues. Over time, the foundry secured the privilege of taking molds from prestigious collections, including those of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, the Capitoline Museums, the Vatican, the Borghese Gallery in Rome, and the Palazzo Pitti and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
