Ancient Syria & Assyria Map — Biblical Near East, Wilkinson London 1815

Located in Langweer, NL

Ancient Syria & Assyria Map — Biblical Near East, Wilkinson London 1815 This finely engraved and original hand-colored antique map titled Syria et Assyria presents a detailed reconstruction of the ancient Near East, published in London in 1815 by the noted cartographer and publisher Robert Wilkinson. Created during the early nineteenth century’s renewed scholarly interest in classical and biblical geography, the map illustrates the historical landscapes of Syria, Mesopotamia, and surrounding regions as described by Greek, Roman, and early historical sources. The map extends from the eastern Mediterranean coastline across the Levant and deep into Mesopotamia, encompassing territories that today include Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Iraq, and parts of Turkey and Iran. Regions such as Syria, Assyria, Babylonia, Chaldea, Mesopotamia, and Media are clearly defined through delicate original hand coloring, allowing viewers to distinguish ancient political and cultural divisions at a glance. Important historical cities appear throughout the composition, including Damascus, Palmyra, Babylon, Nineveh, Antioch, and Jerusalem, alongside rivers fundamental to early civilization such as the Euphrates and Tigris. Cyprus is shown prominently offshore, reinforcing the map’s eastern Mediterranean context and trade connections of antiquity. Desert regions labeled *Arabia Deserta* evoke the classical geographic understanding of the Near Eastern frontier. Wilkinson’s historical atlas sought not to depict contemporary borders but to visualize the ancient world itself — an intellectual endeavor shaped by Enlightenment scholarship, archaeology, and growing European fascination with biblical history. The elegant engraving style, restrained pastel palette, and balanced typography give the map both academic authority and refined decorative appeal. Today, maps from Wilkinson’s classical atlas are highly appreciated for their clarity, historical atmosphere, and suitability for interior display, particularly in studies, libraries, or spaces inspired by classical or Middle Eastern history. Condition: Good antique condition overall. Light age-related toning with scattered spotting and minor handling wear mainly to the margins. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: Particularly striking in a dark walnut or warm gilt frame with an ivory mount. A generous mat enhances the subtle hand coloring and emphasizes the map’s panoramic horizontal composition. Technique: Copperplate engraving with original hand color Maker: Robert Wilkinson, London, 1815 Keywords: Syria et Assyria map, ancient Syria map, Assyria antique map, Mesopotamia map, Babylonia, Chaldea, Media, Nineveh, Babylon, Damascus, Palmyra, Antioch, Jerusalem, Judea, Cyprus antique map...

Antique Map West Africa Morocco Canary Islands Lisbon Sierra Leone Bonne, c1780

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Map West Africa Morocco Canary Islands Lisbon Sierra Leone Bonne c1780 This finely engraved eighteenth-century map by Rigobert Bonne presents the western part of the Old Continent extending from Lisbon southward along the Atlantic coast of Morocco and West Africa toward Sierra Leone, including the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Cape Verde Islands. Engraved circa 1780, the map reflects Bonne’s influential role as Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine and chief cartographer at the Dépôt de la Marine in Paris, where he succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin and helped guide French cartography into a new scientific era emphasizing clarity, standardized measurement, and geographic precision. Titled “Partie Occidentale de l’Ancien Continent, Depuis Lisbonne jusqu’à la Rivière de Sierra Leona,” the composition provides a detailed geographic overview of Atlantic maritime routes and coastal settlements during a period when European navigation, trade, and exploration along the African coast were of great strategic importance. The Iberian Peninsula appears at the upper right, showing Portugal and southern Spain, while Morocco and the Barbary Coast extend downward along the African shoreline. The Canary Islands, Madeira, and Cape Verde archipelagos are clearly delineated, reflecting their significance as navigational waypoints and colonial outposts in transatlantic trade networks. Bonne’s engraving style is marked by refined restraint: minimal decorative embellishment, precise coastal outlines, delicate hachuring for relief, and an elegant typographic hierarchy that enhances readability. The shaded ocean area suggests navigational zones or areas of maritime interest, reinforcing the map’s hydrographic purpose. Place names, rivers, caravan routes, and coastal features provide insight into European geographic knowledge of West Africa during the Enlightenment, illustrating both scientific curiosity and colonial ambitions. As part of Bonne’s mature cartographic output, this map exemplifies the shift from decorative to scientific cartography, making it highly appealing to collectors interested in the evolution of mapping as well as to designers seeking refined historical wall pieces. Its vertical orientation offers strong decorative potential, suitable for both classic and contemporary interiors. Condition report: Good antique condition with age-related toning, visible central fold as issued, light scattered spotting, and minor edge wear consistent with eighteenth-century paper; margins remain suitable for framing. Framing tips: Particularly effective when framed in dark walnut or black with an ivory or warm off-white mat; vertical orientation works well in narrow wall spaces or paired with related North Africa or Atlantic navigation charts for a cohesive display. Technique: Copperplate engraving Maker: Rigobert Bonne, France, circa 1780 Keyword block: West Africa antique map, Morocco antique map, Canary Islands map antique, Madeira Cape Verde map, Rigobert Bonne map, Atlantic navigation chart, Sierra Leone antique map, Barbary Coast map, Enlightenment cartography France, Dépôt de la Marine map, 18th century Africa engraving, Lisbon Portugal antique map, transatlantic navigation routes map, antique French hydrographic chart, Sahara desert map antique, Maghreb West Africa map...

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Roman Empire Map, Europe Mediterranean, Lapie Tardieu, 1838 Description: This finely engraved historical map titled *Carte de l’Empire Romain* was published in Paris in 1838 as part of the celebrated Atlas Universel de Géographie Ancienne et Moderne by the distinguished French cartographer M. Lapie. The atlas is known for its clarity, scholarly precision, and refined aesthetic, representing the high standard of French cartography in the early 19th century. The map depicts the Roman Empire at its greatest extent, spanning across Europe, North Africa, and the Near East. The composition clearly outlines the imperial boundaries, delicately highlighted with original hand coloring, while an intricate network of cities, provinces, and ancient regions provides rich geographical and historical context. Major features such as the Mediterranean basin, the British Isles, Asia Minor, and the Levant are rendered with fine engraved detail and subtle tonal shading. The engraving was executed by Pierre Antoine Tardieu, a respected member of the renowned Tardieu family of French engravers, known for their precision and contribution to scientific and cartographic works. His refined linework enhances both the readability and visual elegance of the map. The balanced composition, combined with restrained color and exceptional detail, gives this sheet a timeless decorative quality. It functions equally well as a historical document and as a sophisticated interior piece, particularly suited for a study, office, or curated gallery wall. Condition report: Good condition overall. Light age toning and scattered foxing visible, mainly in the margins. Original center fold as issued. Paper remains strong and stable. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: Ideal for a dark walnut or black frame with a generous ivory or cream mat to enhance the subtle hand coloring and fine engraved detail. Particularly effective in a study, library, or as part of a curated gallery wall of historical maps. Keywords: antique Roman Empire map, Lapie atlas 1838, Tardieu engraving, Europe map antique...

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Northeastern United States Map — New England & Mid-Atlantic, Bonne c.1780 This finely engraved eighteenth-century map by Rigobert Bonne presents a detailed depiction of the northern United States and adjacent regions of North America during the Enlightenment period. Engraved circa 1780, the map reflects Bonne’s influential role as Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine and chief cartographer at the Dépôt de la Marine in Paris, where he succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin and advanced a more scientific and systematic approach to cartography. Bonne’s work is recognized for its clarity, precision, and restrained aesthetic, marking a shift away from ornate decorative traditions toward geographic accuracy and legibility. Titled “Carte de la Partie Nord, des États Unis de l’Amérique Septentrionale,” the composition captures the northeastern United States and surrounding territories, including New England, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the Mid-Atlantic region, extending inland toward the Great Lakes and westward frontier territories. Prominent geographic features such as Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, the Hudson River, Long Island, and the Chesapeake Bay are carefully rendered, while numerous towns, settlements, and colonial boundaries reflect contemporary European understanding of the newly formed United States following the American Revolutionary period. The detailed coastal delineation underscores the importance of maritime navigation and trade along the Atlantic seaboard. Bonne’s restrained engraving style enhances both readability and visual elegance. Delicate hachuring suggests relief, while grid lines and refined typography emphasize the scientific structure characteristic of Enlightenment cartography. The balanced horizontal composition provides a comprehensive geographic overview, making the map historically informative while maintaining strong decorative appeal. Produced during a transformative moment in North American history, this map offers insight into European perspectives on the early United States and its evolving territorial identity. Today, Bonne’s maps are highly sought after by collectors for their historical significance, clean engraving style, and versatility as decorative wall pieces suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Condition report: Good antique condition with age-related toning, visible central fold as issued, light scattered spotting, and minor handling wear consistent with eighteenth-century paper; margins remain suitable for framing. Framing tips: Particularly effective in a dark walnut or black frame with an ivory or warm off-white mat; the wide horizontal format works well above desks or consoles and pairs nicely with other Bonne maps for a cohesive historical display.
