Great Lakes Antique Map — Canada, Midwest USA, Enlightenment Era, Bonne c.1780

Located in Langweer, NL

Great Lakes Antique Map — Canada, Midwest USA, Enlightenment Era, Bonne c.1780 This finely engraved eighteenth-century map by Rigobert Bonne presents a detailed depiction of the western part of Canada centered on the Great Lakes region, including Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario together with surrounding territories and indigenous lands. Engraved circa 1780, the map reflects Bonne’s influential position as Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine and chief cartographer at the Dépôt de la Marine in Paris, where he succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin and helped define Enlightenment-era cartography through scientific precision, clarity of layout, and systematic geographic representation. Titled “Partie Occidentale du Canada, contenant les cinq Grands Lacs avec les Pays Circonvoisins,” the map illustrates the strategic and geographic importance of the Great Lakes basin during the late eighteenth century. The interconnected lake system is rendered with remarkable clarity, showing major waterways, portages, settlements, and indigenous territories. Numerous tribal and regional names appear across the landscape, reflecting contemporary European knowledge derived from exploration, trade networks, and colonial mapping efforts. River systems connecting the interior to the St. Lawrence basin and Mississippi watershed are carefully delineated, underscoring the importance of these routes for fur trade commerce, military movement, and geographic exploration. Bonne’s restrained engraving style is evident throughout. Delicate linework and subtle hachuring convey relief without excessive ornamentation, while grid lines and structured typography emphasize scientific readability. The wide horizontal composition allows viewers to grasp the vast geographic relationships between the Great Lakes, inland territories, and surrounding regions. Produced during a period of shifting colonial control following the Seven Years’ War, the map offers valuable insight into European understanding of North American geography during a transformative historical era. Highly sought after for both historical and decorative qualities, Bonne’s maps combine scholarly credibility with elegant visual balance. This example appeals equally to collectors of early North American cartography and to interior designers seeking refined historical wall pieces with strong geographic presence. Condition report: Good antique condition with age-related toning, visible central fold as issued, light scattered spotting, and minor handling wear consistent with eighteenth-century paper; margins remain adequate for framing. Framing tips: Particularly effective in a dark walnut or black frame with an ivory or warm off-white mat; the panoramic horizontal format makes it ideal for placement above desks, consoles, or as part of a coordinated gallery wall featuring related North American or exploration maps. Technique: Copperplate engraving Maker: Rigobert Bonne, France, circa 1780 Keyword block: Great Lakes antique map, Rigobert Bonne map, Canada antique map, Lake Superior Lake Michigan map, Lake Huron Erie Ontario map, Enlightenment cartography North America, French hydrographic chart Canada, Dépôt de la Marine map, 18th century Great Lakes engraving, early Midwest USA map, indigenous territories map antique, fur trade routes map, historical Canada USA borderlands map, antique French cartography, North American exploration map, Bonne engraving map, colonial North America cartography, antique navigation...

Original Antique Costume Print of Peru – Arrieros & Aymara Dance, c.1840

Located in Langweer, NL

Title: Original Antique Costume Print of Peru – Arrieros & Aymara Dance, c.1840 Description: An original antique hand-coloured engraving titled "Perou", depicting traditional costumes and customs of Peru. The print was published in France around 1840 as part of the celebrated travel publication *Voyage autour du Monde et Naufrages Célèbres*. The composition combines two characteristic scenes of nineteenth-century Peru. On the left are *Arrieros*, the muleteers who played an essential role in transporting goods across the Andes before the arrival of modern roads and railways. Wearing their distinctive regional dress, they represent one of the most recognisable occupations of the Andean world. On the right, the print illustrates a festive *Danse d'Indiens Aymaras*, showing Aymara men and women performing a traditional dance accompanied by panpipes and drums. The elaborate feathered and balloon-shaped ceremonial headdresses, colourful costumes and musical instruments celebrate the rich cultural traditions of the Indigenous peoples of the high Andes. During the nineteenth century, European publishers produced beautifully hand-coloured costume prints documenting the peoples, customs and landscapes encountered by explorers and travellers. These engravings offered readers an illustrated journey through distant cultures and remain highly sought after today for their ethnographic and decorative appeal. The delicate original hand colouring brings the costumes to life while preserving the fine engraved detail, making this an attractive example of early nineteenth-century travel illustration. This is an original antique print printed...

Original Antique Print of Iceland Geyser, Hekla and Orkney Bird Catchers, 1802

Located in Langweer, NL

Original Antique Print of Iceland Geyser, Hekla and Orkney Bird Catchers, 1802 Original antique hand-colored copper engraving depicting remarkable scenes from Iceland and the northern islands, published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder” in Weimar in 1802. The plate is titled “Verm. Gegenst. XLVI / Mélanges XLVI” and was devoted to what Bertuch described as “Nordische Merkwürdigkeiten,” or Northern Curiosities. Fig. 1 depicts the extraordinary and dangerous practice of bird catching on the steep cliffs of the Orkney and other northern islands. Men are shown descending the sheer rock face on ropes to reach nesting seabirds, while others cross a dramatic chasm on a narrow suspended rope. Small sailing vessels appear in the turbulent sea below. Fig. 2 depicts the famous Great Geyser of Iceland erupting dramatically into the air, surrounded by clouds of steam. In the distance are the volcanic mountains of Iceland, including Mount Hekla, shown emitting smoke. Bertuch specifically identifies this scene as “Der Geyser und Hekla auf Island” — the Geyser and Hekla in Iceland. The dramatic combination of cliff climbing, turbulent seas, sailing vessels, an erupting geyser and volcanic landscape makes this an unusually lively plate from Bertuch’s encyclopedia. The engraving bears the inscription “Jacob Hauer Schmuzer” at lower right. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher, writer and patron of the arts. His monumental “Bilderbuch für Kinder” (Picture Book for Children) was one of the great illustrated educational encyclopedias of its period, containing hundreds of engraved and hand-colored plates covering natural history, geography, science, technology, antiquity, costumes and other subjects. Creator: Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) Engraver: Jacob Hauer Schmuzer Source: Bilderbuch für Kinder Plate: Vermischte Gegenstände XLVI / Mélanges XLVI – Nordische Merkwürdigkeiten Place of Publication: Weimar, Germany Date of Manufacture: 1802 Period: Early 19th Century Style: Neoclassical – In the Period of Medium: Original hand-colored copper engraving on paper Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Light age-related toning and occasional minor spotting. Minor marginal wear. Original hand coloring remains attractive and the engraved impressions are well preserved. Please refer to the photographs for further details of condition. Art Deco Fortune Magazine Cover - October 1938
Art Deco Fortune Magazine Cover - October 1938

Art Deco Fortune Magazine Cover - October 1938

Located in Dallas, TX

PRESENTING a FABULOUS Original Art Deco Fortune Cover – October 1938. The cover of ‘Fortune Magazine’ for October 1938, framed and matted. This is an ORIGINAL COVER, not a re-print or copy. It is the cover of an actual 1938 Fortune Magazine and we can 100% certify it’s authenticity. We have attached a COA on the back of the frame. The frame is modern. It is a silver, industrial style frame with black and white beveled matting. The frame and matting are perfect for the style of the era. The cover print is an Art Deco depiction of an ethnic Hispanic Village and Lady carrying a basket of fruit on her head with industrialization in the background in CLASSIC ART DECO STYLE. The cover is in near mint condition as can be seen from the photos. This is one of the more iconic covers of Fortune. Pained by ‘Covarrubias’ as noted and signed on the bottom left. Miguel Covarrubias also known as José Miguel Covarrubias Duclaud (22 November 1904 — 4 February 1957) was a Mexican painter, caricaturist, illustrator, ethnologist and art historian. Miguel’s artwork and celebrity caricatures have been featured in The New Yorker and Vanity Fair magazines. The linear nature of his drawing style was highly influential to other caricaturists such as Al Hirschfeld. Miguel’s first book of caricatures The Prince of Wales and Other Famous Americans was a hit, though not all his subjects were thrilled that his sharp, pointed wit was aimed at them. He immediately fell in love with the Harlem jazz scene, which he frequented with Rosa and friends including Eugene O’Neill and Nickolas Muray. He counted many notables among his friends including Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes and W.C. Handy for whom he also illustrated books. Miguel’s caricatures of the jazz clubs were the first of their kind printed in Vanity Fair. He managed to capture the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance in much of his work as well as in his book, Negro Drawings. He did not consider these caricatures, but serious drawings of people, music and a culture he loved. Covarrubias also did illustrations for George Macy, the publisher of The Limited Editions Club, including Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Green...
