Amassed by the renowned husband-and-wife team of Helmut and Alison Gernsheim between 1945 and 1963, it contains an unparalleled range of images, beginning with the world's earliest-known photograph from nature, made by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826. It includes some 35,000 major and representative photographs from the 19th and 20th c; a research library of some 3,600 books, journals, and published articles; about 250 autographed letters and manuscripts; and more than 200 pieces of early photographic equipment. Its encyclopedic scope—as well as the expertise and taste with which the Gernsheims built the collection—makes the Gernsheim Collection one of the world's premier resources for the study and appreciation of the development of photography.
Published to coincide with a landmark exhibition staged by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, which owns the collection, this book presents masterpieces of the collection, along with lesser-known images of great historical significance. Arranged in chronological order, this selection effectively constitutes a visual history of photography from its beginnings to the mid-20th c. Each full-page image is accompanied by an extensive annotation in which Roy Flukinger describes the photograph's place in the evolution of photography and also within the Gernsheim Collection. Santiago Álvarez Román (1919-1998) was a Cuban filmmaker. Alvarez wrote and directed documentaries about Cuban and American culture. He became head of ICAIC newsreel division in the 60s and developed an unique format for his docu films.
Antonio Fernández Reboiro is a Cuban Postwar & Contemporary artist who was born in 1935. He studied medicine and architecture at the University of Havana. In 1963 he began to work at the ICAIC (Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry) until 1982 designing posters.
Most of the highly collectible Cuban posters are from mid-1960s through early 1980s, the period called “el periodo de oro de la grafica cubana” (golden period of Cuban graphics). These silkscreens were develop with new graphic techniques, due in part that materials were not readily available and lack of formal graphic schools. The Cuban posters became known for the use of bold innovate images which were mostly for proganda. Among the most important were the movie posters of the ICAIC which would promote the national movie industry as well as foreign films.

Maison Monnet was founded in 1838. In 1897, Jean-Gabriel Monnet chose the emblem of the salamander to decorate his bottles. The salamander is a mythical animal with the power to triumph over flames.
Leonetto Cappiello is an Italian painter, illustrator, caricaturist and poster artist, naturalized French in 1930. His poster career began in 1900 and continued until the 1930s. He remained loyal to the Vercasson printing press until the early 1920s , continues with “Les Imprimeries Réunies” and begins, at the same period, to work regularly for the publisher Devambez, with whom he signs, from 1921 to 1936, an exclusive contract.

This bold composition presents two pine trees extending to the left and right across a gold leaf background. One tree is silhouetted against a green ground, golden clouds obscuring its true size, the other stretches across a stylized waterway. The pines are paired with Manchurian cranes with red crests and snow white plumage. Both have been highly auspicious motifs in East Asia since Chinese antiquity. Here the artist utilized fluid and instinctive ink brushstrokes to define the trunk, branches and tail feathers, in strong contrast to the precision and sharp angularity of the crane’s legs and beaks. The adoption of this vast metallic painting support required an unerring sense of design and composition, so that the negative space surrounding motifs could imply context for the otherwise floating pictorial elements. The brushwork detailing the trunks of the pines, the exaggerated dimensions of the pine trees and the strength and dynamism of the composition are all reminiscent of Kano Eitoku...
