'Collapsed Triptych in Sand' is a unique wall-mounted sculptural artwork by the British artist, Olivia Walker. It has been created from coloured porcelain, tadelakt plaster and resin. The dimensions above are for the three panels. Walker works in porcelain to create pieces that explore ideas of growth and decay through the construction and layering of complex surfaces. All of her pieces start by being thrown on the wheel, before being built upon with thousands of individually applied fragments of porcelain. Many of her pieces are thrown and altered, often being cut away and reassembled in the leather-hard stage which allows her to deconstruct the form creating new surfaces on which to continue adding her porcelain layers. Starting from a set point on a piece, Walker lets these organic accretions spread out and grow, almost eating through, or growing over the form beneath and covering it. Walker makes reference to organisms such as fungus, corals, and bacteria but her pieces are her own interpretation, letting the viewer bring their own ideas and emotions to her pieces. An original acrylic painting on board titled “Tete” by Karel Appel. Executed in 1968. Hand signed lower right. The composition features a boldly abstracted face rendered with thick, gestural brushwork and saturated areas of green, blue, pink, yellow, and white. Energetic lines and layered color create a sense of immediacy and movement consistent with Appel’s expressive approach. Appel was a founding member of the CoBrA movement, and this painting reflects the group’s emphasis on spontaneity, color, and expressive form. Provenance: From a private estate in Birmingham, MI. Originally acquired from the J.L. Hudson Gallery in 1972 (see documentation in listing). Dimensions: 26.25”h x 19.25”w x 1.5”d (framed) / 21"h x 13.5"w (painting size). Condition: The surface shows intentional texture, visible brushstrokes, and areas of impasto consistent with Appel’s working method. A woman's court coat made from fine orange color silk with wide sleeves from Chinese Qing Dynasty (mid 19th century), mounted on linen canvas and presented on under a plexiglass shadow box with brass corner trims. This piece is part of the textile art collection of the former Xerox Corporate and still bears a metal tag that read "Xerox property no A2425". The semi-long Apricot color silk coat features elaborate embroidery work executed in superb workmanship. Perfectly symmetrical, the design follows the iconic Qing dynasty court tradition as an informal court coat. The bottom of the skirt is bordered with fine Li-Shui bands with rocks in the middle. Three large peony floral roundels form the focal points of the front. Two additional were placed on the shoulder (half visible). Numerous auspicious symbols were incorporated into the picture, including plum blossom, Chrysanthemum flower centered with Buddhism symbols, bats, butterflies, and magic mushrooms. The neck and skirt bands features archaic key motif, scrolling floral vines and Buddhist drums with ribbons. Examining the robe, one is struck by the fine workmanship. Long and short satin stiches were used widely. The peonies were created using forbidden knots (Peking Knote), one of the most challenging and time-consuming stiches in Qing textile. The robe carries a nice patina, reflecting in a mottled fading in the background that renders the piece a nice antique aurora...
