Victorian Jewelry This era was one of the most influenced and influential periods of antique jewelry. This period is defined by the British monarch, in this case, Alexandrina Victoria, the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as the Empress of India, years 1837-1901. There are 3 sub-periods within this era. First, the early, Romantic period, which is soaked in traditions, natural motifs in gold and silver, clear stones only being worn during the day and colored gems by night. The second being the Grand or mourning period, which coincides with the death of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert the consort, who died in December of 1861. This period included large, dark, somber, dramatic jewelry, with a lot of black onyx, jet wood, amethyst, garnet and gold. This lasted until 1880's, when the aesthetic period of jewelry began. The Late or third stage of the Victorian period, use more complex and feminine motifs, returning to the natural, including many floral and celestial designs, with more decadent gemstones, lasting until the turn of the century. The Victorian era of jewelry includes many movements found in other countries, including revivals such as the Etruscan the Roman and the Egyptian as well as the Art Nouveau, Liberty style and Arts and Crafts design movements which lead into the beginning of the twentieth century. Operculum Shell Jewelry First of all these unusual black and brown shells have a cat’s-eye appearance and were common used in Victorian jewelry. Operculum is Latin for “lid” or “cover” and is a unique type of freshwater snail shell. Widely popular in the Victorian era, operculum jewelry...

Antique Snake Ring All Original Size 13
Located in Southbury, CT
Spectacular and rare: this 19th-century snake ring was created by hand-pulled gold wire which was pounded flat, coiled, fused and engraved with rich detailing. A small diamond set inside a chunky silver bezel forms the crown of the snake. This thin ring (.98mm) is so meticulously detailed and extraordinarily fine. I'm dating it as an early Victorian piece -circa 1850- but it may well be an older Georgian ring. Remarkably, the ring is not dented, torn, or damaged in any way. In fact, the ring has never been resized. It was created as a size 13 ring...

Victorian Rose Cut Diamond Turquoise Pearl Ring 14 Karat Gold Antique Engagement
Located in New York, NY
An stunning and oh so Romantic Antique Victorian Ring with a Rose Cut Diamond, a halo of Pearls and two Persian Turquoise gems. The combination of Diamond, Pearls and Turquoise in this beautifully made ring is an absolute delight. The Rose Cut Diamond is surrounded by a halo of silvery white pearls. On the sides of the halo are two Persian Turquoise cabochons. The ring creates a flower, Forget-Me-Not effect with the gems. The jewels are set in 14 Karat Yellow Gold with a lovely scroll motif along the shank. One of my favorite rings. The ring dates to the Victorian period - circa 1850 - 1900. The ring is a magnificent wedding ring or engagement ring, as part of a stack, or a ring to be worn every day or at the most glamorous affairs. The halo top...

Victorian GIA 10.10 Carat Pink Sapphire and Diamond Ring
Located in METAIRIE, LA
From our Beverly Hills Estate Collection, this GIA Certified Pink Sapphire is a Victorian period piece. A rare bubblegum pink shade with no heat treatments or artificial enhancements [at a fraction of the cost of a natural purplish pink earth-mined diamond such as a 9 carat Christie's sold for $15.7m] ... A natural Vivid Pink with a Purplish hue - a characteristic of Sri Lanka mined Sapphires.. In today's standards, considered a Bubblegum Pink. Less than 10% of Sapphires mined at this time were Pink.. Pink Sapphires are much rarer than those in the Blue range. Princess Diana's Sapphire & Diamond ring [12 carat Blue Sapphire estimated now at a worth of $500k] was created by a modern day jeweler, Garrard, designed as an attribute to this similar Victorian halo...

Diamond Stanhope Ring in Aluminum
Located in Southbury, CT
A rare aluminum and diamind stanhope ring. A "Stanhope lens" is a tiny single-lens microscope invented in the late 18th century by Eton-educated Charles Stanhope, the 3rd Earl Stanhope. The unique construction of the lens requires that the object to be magnified be near or in direct contact with the lens. Photography, which had been invented several decades prior to the Stanhope lens, was ever-evolving, and something called "microphotographs" became a thing in the mid-1800s. These tiny photographs could not be seen without a microscope. The Victorians, dressed as they were in multiple layers of social decorum, etiquette, and clothing, loved microphotographs because they were cunning, and the subject matter could be naughty —filthy naughty, even— yet remain invisible to anyone without a microscope. The Stanhope lens came along at just the right time and was eagerly adopted; incorporated into everything from crucifixes to sewing scissors. And, of course, set into rings. Stanhope rings...

Rare Japan Shakudo Snake Ring 14 Karat Gold Antique Victorian Samurai circa 1870
Located in New York, NY
This is a very rare ring depicting a snake traveling through the grass in the historic Japanese art form of Shakudo, in 14 Karat Gold. The Shakudo pieces originated in the Samurai period in Japan and were created by esteemed artists who made ornaments to adorn swords and armor. When the Samurai period ended, these artists moved to making wearable art during the period of the 1870s - 1900. Here we have a very rare Shakudo piece of a snake traveling through grass. Notice the grace of the proportion of the images and the Japanese esthetic of asymmetry. The mixed metals Shakudo plaque is set in 14 Karat Gold. In the Victorian era the snake was the symbol of eternal love. It has come to symbolize sexuality, rebirth and wisdom. Snake jewelry is highly desirable and collected today. Provenance: From the collection of the legendary Edith Weber Jewelry from Edith Weber was worn on the red carpets of the Academy Awards and graced many major national magazines. Her store at The Carlyle was described as a historical jewel box with esoteric jewelry...
