Georgian Jewelry

GEORGIAN STYLE

Georgian jewelry is named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). A slew of beautiful pieces were produced during the period, and today antique Georgian rings, necklaces and other accessories are coveted by fine jewelry collectors.

There are certain features that distinguish jewelry from this era, including the fact that pieces from the 18th and early 19th centuries were handmade (so don’t let the absence of a maker’s mark lead you to believe otherwise). Antique Georgian jewelry also has a certain “look.” It’s a bit gray because stones were often set in silver, and because stonecutting techniques were not as advanced as they are today, the gems do not possess the level of sparkle to which we have become accustomed.

Intricate metalworking techniques such as repoussé (the hammering of metal into ornate designs) and cannetille (a method of working the gold wire to make it look woven) allowed goldsmiths to really flex their muscles. These gold pieces, either on their own or combined with gemstones, made for highly original and dramatic jewelry. The era also saw pieces with ornately woven strands of human hair.

Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. These were often cut in the shape of a cabochon or teardrop. It was fashionable to combine garnets or rubies with seed pearls. In Georgian diamond rings, popular cuts for diamonds included rose, old mine and table. Around the 1780s, paste jewelry, or hand-cut glass on foil, was used to imitate diamonds.

Georgian 14K Gold Handmade Fancy Link Bracelet with Wedgwood Intaglio Charms
Located in Venice, CA
Over two centuries old, this 14k gold Georgian fancy link chain is one of the most unique pieces of jewelry we’ve encountered. The five intaglios date to 1779, while the fancy link chain they hang from is circa 1800. The bracelet has multiple layers of history to it, and each element was made with astonishing craftsmanship. The gold chain itself is an incredible piece of artistry. The complexity is intense—this is a masterwork of Georgian elements and a true geometric wonder. It is multi-component, alternating between several different intricate links. An elongated cage-like link is hollow and squared-off, vaguely reminiscent of a butterfly in its symmetry. It alternates with a squashed, pumpkin-like globe that is bisected by a dotted oval link. The completely handmade reticulation was created by hand-sawing out each detail. In between them is a fettered link, consisting of overlapping circles tied around a middle section that is adorned with stars. The tiny stars on the central link are indicative of the Georgian era, dating the chain to the early 1800’s. Five intaglios hang from the chain, in the Georgian era equivalent of a charm bracelet. The black intaglios are made from basalt—a vitreous material that tightens as it hardens and is perfect for capturing carved detail. In places, the black basalt has a subtle shimmer that enhances its beauty. The center intaglio contains the profile of a man, and is marked on the back as Wedgwood and “38-2”. The other two basalt intaglios are double sided and Wedgwood. One features Seneca on one side and Isaac Newton on the other, with a shooting star like symbol near his head. Perhaps these basalt Wedgwood medallions...

Antique Gold Cameo Ring Greek Theatre Mask Silenus Hardstone Intaglio Signet
Located in London, GB
A very unusual antique gold ring set with a carved brown and white hardstone cameo depicting the theatrical comic mask of Silenus, the Greek mythological old rustic god of wine-making and drunkenness. The ring was made in the late 19th century and carries French control marks for 18K gold, whilst the cameo is probably Italian and made slightly earlier, circa 1800. Silenus was a companion to the wine god Dionysus, and suitably he was a notorious consumer of wine, usually drunk and supported by satyrs or carried by a donkey. Silenus was described as the oldest, wisest and most drunken of the followers of Dionysus, and was said to possess special knowledge and the power of prophecy when intoxicated. He presides over the other satyrs and is related to musical creativity, prophetic ecstasy, drunken joy and drunken dances. Silenus was usually depicted as a jovial old man, bald yet bearded, with a pot-belly, thick lips and snub-nose. The masks worn to play him in theatre really emphasised these features, as you can see with this cameo carving Theatre was a key part of ancient Greek culture. The theatrical masks worn by the actors, known as ‘prosopon’, served various purposes. They enabled individual actors to play multiple roles (or genders) in the same performance; the exaggerated expressions helped define the character being portrayed; they helped spectators in the back rows to tell the characters apart. This particular masked as mentioned before is a comedic Silenus, please see final photo for other examples of Silenus masks in museum collections.
