Georgian Jewelry

GEORGIAN STYLE

Georgian jewelry is named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). A slew of beautiful pieces were produced during the period, and today antique Georgian rings, necklaces and other accessories are coveted by fine jewelry collectors.

There are certain features that distinguish jewelry from this era, including the fact that pieces from the 18th and early 19th centuries were handmade (so don’t let the absence of a maker’s mark lead you to believe otherwise). Antique Georgian jewelry also has a certain “look.” It’s a bit gray because stones were often set in silver, and because stonecutting techniques were not as advanced as they are today, the gems do not possess the level of sparkle to which we have become accustomed.

Intricate metalworking techniques such as repoussé (the hammering of metal into ornate designs) and cannetille (a method of working the gold wire to make it look woven) allowed goldsmiths to really flex their muscles. These gold pieces, either on their own or combined with gemstones, made for highly original and dramatic jewelry. The era also saw pieces with ornately woven strands of human hair.

Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. These were often cut in the shape of a cabochon or teardrop. It was fashionable to combine garnets or rubies with seed pearls. In Georgian diamond rings, popular cuts for diamonds included rose, old mine and table. Around the 1780s, paste jewelry, or hand-cut glass on foil, was used to imitate diamonds.

Antique Georgian Carnelian Small Fob Pendant
Located in Rotterdam, NL
This antique Georgian fob pendant, dating back to the late 18th to early 19th century, is a fine example of the elegant craftsmanship of the period. The pendant is adorned with a carnelian stone, a richly colored orange-red gemstone that was highly favored during the Georgian era. The carnelian is polished and set securely into a decorative metal mount, featuring engraved lines throughout the fob. The pendant’s design reflects the artistic trends of the time, combining functionality with aesthetic appeal. Fobs were originally practical items used to seal letters and documents with wax. The base of the fob, typically engraved with a crest, monogram, or decorative motif, would leave an imprint in the wax, serving as a personalized signature. This made them essential tools for gentlemen and women of status during the Georgian era, as they were used for authenticating important communications. Beyond their functional purpose, fobs quickly became fashionable accessories, symbolizing wealth, style, and social standing. Worn on a pocket watch chain, waistcoat, or as pendants, fobs often showcased intricate designs and high-quality materials, such as precious stones like carnelian, amethyst, or agate. The vibrant carnelian stone was particularly popular due to its durability and its association with protection, vitality, and courage. Over time, fobs evolved from purely utilitarian objects to highly decorative jewelry pieces, admired for their beauty and craftsmanship. They were often gifted as sentimental tokens or symbols of affection, further enhancing their appeal. This Georgian carnelian...

18th Century Micromosaic, Rome, c. 1795, Attributed to G. Raffaelli
Located in Aspen, CO
18th century micromosaic of a turtle dove on her nest with a chick, attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli. To see a similar plaque, signed and dated Giacomo Raffaelli, 1791; see: Aste Bolaffi Auction House, lot 324, May 31, 2023, Torino Italy. Birds were a popular motif in micromosaics in the last quarter of the 18th century and into the early 19th century. This mosaic is well executed with fine detail as seen in the shading. Little effort had been made in the dark background to follow the contour of the dove's silhouette, instead keeping the tessera in horizontal rows with square tesserae. The decorative border or millefiori of three colors around the edge create a colorful frame to this delightful scene. All of these characteristics date this plaque as being late 18th century and most likely executed by Giacomo Raffaelli. For more detailed information, see page 32 of "The Gilbert Collection Micromosaics by Jeanette H. Gabriel. Philip Wilson Publishers. The reader will see the characteristics unique to Raffaelli. Jeannette Gabriel is considered a foremost expert in the work of Raffaelli, and was a statically important participant in the management, development and analysis of the Gilbert Collection. Her observations relative to the work of Raffaelli are therefore quite credible by art historians This micromosaic is 2 5/8th inches in diameter, and backed in copper which is typical of plaques made at this time. This plaque was probably set onto a box of some sort as it has a glue like substance on the verso, which can be removed. We have chosen to keep this as it came to us, and in an effort to be careful, we have made no effort to remove it. We have one of the largest collections of micromosaics offered for sale. If our reader is searching for a particular motif, we would be happy to list it here for your consideration. From very large wall hangings...

Antique Georgian Berlin Iron Chandelier Earrings
Located in Stamford, CT
Happy Birthday to these fabulous earrings that are 200 years old this year. Berlin Iron jewelry in excellent condition is rare, even in the museums of the world. The earrings are in three sections, the top two being frilly fine spirals of iron with a silver heart at top. The bottom section is a classical portrait , both male and female on a background of shining steel. The figures would have been recognized in 1820. These are made in Gleiwitz, Germany. By now I have written much about Berlin Iron, as I sell necklaces and bracelets as well. It was made because of the Napoleonic War when France and Germany fought hard and long. Both countries ran out of war funds. Germany was first to turn to their aristocrats for money. The wealthy citizens gave their gold jewelry to the German treasury in exchange for iron jewelry. The iron jewels...

Scarce Antique Georgian Pink Ruby and Diamond Floral Cluster Ring c 1800 Italian
Located in London, GB
This unusual antique Georgian era floral ruby and diamond cluster ring dating to around 1800 was probably made in Italy. In the middle of the ring head lies a collet set and foil-backed bright pink ruby. It is surrounded by a sea of 20 flat-cut and closely set diamonds in a flower head cluster style. The raised ruby setting appears to fixed to the ring with a cut-down rivet which is visible on the smooth underside of the bezel. The rosy hued gold ridged shoulders taper down to the back of the shank. This elegant ring sits fairly flat on the finger to allow for frequent wear and is without doubt a particularly unusual and scarce example of its kind. UK size L 1/2, US size 6 4.72g, band tests as 14K gold, bezel tests as silver, ring head measures 14mm x 13mm. Each diamond measures between 1mm and 3mm. Approx 0.3ct...
