Georgian Jewelry

GEORGIAN STYLE

Georgian jewelry is named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). A slew of beautiful pieces were produced during the period, and today antique Georgian rings, necklaces and other accessories are coveted by fine jewelry collectors.

There are certain features that distinguish jewelry from this era, including the fact that pieces from the 18th and early 19th centuries were handmade (so don’t let the absence of a maker’s mark lead you to believe otherwise). Antique Georgian jewelry also has a certain “look.” It’s a bit gray because stones were often set in silver, and because stonecutting techniques were not as advanced as they are today, the gems do not possess the level of sparkle to which we have become accustomed.

Intricate metalworking techniques such as repoussé (the hammering of metal into ornate designs) and cannetille (a method of working the gold wire to make it look woven) allowed goldsmiths to really flex their muscles. These gold pieces, either on their own or combined with gemstones, made for highly original and dramatic jewelry. The era also saw pieces with ornately woven strands of human hair.

Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. These were often cut in the shape of a cabochon or teardrop. It was fashionable to combine garnets or rubies with seed pearls. In Georgian diamond rings, popular cuts for diamonds included rose, old mine and table. Around the 1780s, paste jewelry, or hand-cut glass on foil, was used to imitate diamonds.

Antique Georgian Memento Mori Pocket Watch Key, Ca. 1800
Located in Rotterdam, NL
An exceptional antique Georgian pocket watch key, made of pink gold. The pink gold key is decorated and surrounded by detailed hollow curled figures on its border which features delicate decorative engravings on both sides. For the presentation behind the glass human hair is used to create a highly detailed floral design with white accented make it look like pearls. The shrine is probably made of bone and draped with these 'pearls', overall in excellent condition. The two arrowed hearts - depicting above the shrine - are a sign of love, the love between two people. Watched by The All Seeing Eye enclosed in a triangle surrounded by a ray of light. The eye also known as the Masonic Eye or Eye of Providence, is up there as one of the most recognized Freemason symbols. On the other side a lock of hair is beautifully displayed with the initials 'JAvJ'. The presentation has been impeccably preserved beneath the glass. The Georgian watch...

Antique Diamond & Scarlet Guilloche Enamel Ring with Provenance
Located in Danvers, MA
I’m happy to offer this charm filled antique diamond and enamel ring that also comes with wonderful provenance. I believe this piece is more suited for special event/occasional wear due to its age and delicacy. Crafted of silver and rose gold that tests around 9K to 10K, the ring features a striking scarlet red Guilloche enamel plaque set to the center with a fiery old mine cut diamond, surrounded by rustic and twinkling old rose cut diamonds. Another collet set rose cut diamond is set at each shoulder, with lovely period details. Definitely antique and with good provenance, this ring may originally have been a Georgian to early Victorian mourning ring, as I am not certain that the enamel plaque is the original center to the diamond surround. It is, however, extremely striking and beautiful in this piece. Measuring approximately 2.3 x 2.1 mm, the center diamond is a chunky old mine cut held within 5 rose gold prongs. I would estimate it at approximately .05 to .07 carats, though the setting doesn't allow for precise measurement of the depth of the stone. Very fiery, it contrasts beautifully with the scarlet color of the enamel. I would judge its color to be in the I-J range of near-colorless, though it faces up even more white. Completely eye-clean, it also has very good clarity under magnification and remains in very good antique condition. (it could use a bit of cleaning, though. I have not cleaned or polished this old piece, as some prefer to receive things in "as found" condition.) I do see some old solder around the base of the setting with magnification, and since one would usually expect a collet or bezel set stone, I do believe this is not the original diamond or setting. I'm sure it would have originally been a rose cut diamond - though I have to say that this mine cut has wonderful color and fire that works very well with the enamel work. I love the sunburst style of the Guilloche enamel (which is more crisp in real life than in my photos) - as well as the vivid glow of the scarlet color. It shows a little wear - mostly under magnification, but there is one small chip at an edge that can be seen with the naked eye. The enamel is still present in that spot, though, so it isn't terribly noticeable. The size of the enamel plaque is approximately 8 x 6 mm, and it moves slightly within its setting. Eighteen rustic rose cut diamonds in closed back settings create the charming halo surrounding the diamond set plaque. Varying in size and cut, most are very chunky, while two look more like old replacement flat cut diamond slices. Ranging in size from approximately 1.5 to 2 mm in diameter, they also range a bit in clarity and wear. Some are very clean and show no damage, and some show a few inclusions and chips/damage. Some are certainly old replacements. Together they provide just the right amount of period twinkle, glow and sparkle. On each shoulder is another rustic rose/flat cut diamond in a substantial silver setting, measuring approximately 1.8 mm in diameter. Prettily detailed elongated triangular silver ornaments extend down the center of the split shank shoulders from the edge of the diamond's settings, with the rose gold impressed to either side. The band is in good antique condition, showing some expected wear and signs of having been sized in the past. It gives the ring more of an oval shape (which is actually very comfortable since it is closer in shape to an actual finger.) A bit of old solder is visible inside the band at the join of each shoulder. The finished weight of the ring is 3.25 grams. Currently size 9.25, the ring can be sized within reason (a few sizes either way) by a skilled jeweler who is comfortable working with antique jewelry. Provenance: This ring came to me from the shop collection of Edith Weber Antique...

GIA Report Certified 1 Carat Old Cut Diamond Yellow Gold Engagement Ring
Located in London, GB
With a stunning round old cut diamond traditionally set by hand in a "cut down" setting, this ring is a nod to classic Georgian design. The platinum around the diamond shows it off perfectly and gives the ring a modern twist while making it incredibly durable for everyday wear. We love the gorgeous hidden star detail at the side. The ring is also wedding band friendly, meaning a traditional wedding band will slot perfectly along aside. The antique diamond offers so much more character than a modern diamond and is an ethical choice as it has been recycled from an old piece of jewellery. This particular diamond is very rare due to its high quality as many diamonds of this quality were re-cut into modern brilliant cuts. 1.01 carat old European cut diamond E colour...

Antique Iberian (Georgian) Emerald and Diamond Navette Shaped Ring 19th Century
Located in OVIEDO, AS
Antique Emerald and Diamond Navette Shaped Ring 19th Century.. Georgian rings are rare and usually experience a few subtle makeovers as they journey through time. In this one, a central emerald weighing approx. 0.40 carats surrounded by 17 rose-cut diamonds are enwrapped--and enhanced--by darkened silver over gold weighing in total 1.40 carats, all the stones back foiled. This striking mix contrasts beautifully with its subtly decorated, brightly yellow gold ring shank in 18 Karat Gold (the 18K ring shank was replaced at a later date), in order to protect the original Antique central Navette Iberian (Georgian) Ring, Total weight: 12.70 grams. Antique Georgian Long Gold Chain, Necklace and Bracelets, Circa 1820
Located in London, GB
A Georgian long gold chain, of belcher links with a repeat zig-zag pattern. This chain has three barrel clasps and can also be worn as a shorter necklace and two bracelets or one bracelet and a medium length chain, circa 1820. This style of Georgian or Regency chain was at its height of popularity between 1800 and 1840. The Napoleonic wars had lead to a scarcity of gold, therefore jewellers designed pieces that had as much impact as possible, whilst utilising smaller quantities of gold. The chains are hand made, with the patterns being produced by stamping thin gold sheet, which were then curved lengthways and soldered together to form oval or round belcher links. From 1848 onwards more gold deposits were discovered, this lead to increases in weight of chains and had a strong influence on jewellery design in the Victorian period. The chunky look and delicate feel is distinguishes Georgian chains from Victorian examples. With thanks to Navette Jewellery
