Chinese Arcaistic Style Cast Bronze Lidded Urn with Carved Jade Finial
Located in Hudson, NY
This very finely cast bronze urn in an archaistic form was made in the very late 19th century approximately 1895-1900. Done with an apocryphal feeling to honor the ancient past, the vase is beautifully rendered in low relief in bronze covering almost the entire body of the urn. The predominant features are the divided taotie masks that compose the swelling middle body of the vase and also at the corners of the upper section. Crisp but subtle, the casting is clearly handled with great attention to linear form. The patina is very nice and consists of a modeled golden brown with a slight but very lite Verdigris color. The urn has an old rosewood base and lid that seems to have been purpose made for the object. Finally, the whole is set off with a carved jade finial...

Japanese Six Panel Screen, Peonies and Young Growth on Gold Silk
Located in Hudson, NY
Rimpa floral scene. Pigment on gilded silk, signature and seal read: Hattori Shunyo. Bold colors and strong design elements combined with the trademark tarashikomi (diluted elements created when water is applied to the surface before or after pigments causing them to diffuse) exhibit the artists deep devotion to this important Japanese painting tradition. Notes about artist: Hattori Shunyo (b. 1883) was an artist from Kyoto who graduated the (now) Kyoto Municipal University of Art and fell under the circle of Yamamoto Shunkyo...

Beach Figures (with flying birds)
Located in New York, NY
mixed media on wood Artist’s Statement Primarily a painter, I use a hybrid visual language that is both abstract and figurative, and fuse domestic and landscape imagery. I build eccentric formats that promote an improvisational attitude toward composition and playfully references the instability and dislocation characteristic of contemporary life. In my work, as in life, the past permeates the present and the commonplace collides with the enigmatic and inexplicable. I make short experimental films using stop motion technique that incorporates sound as well as written and spoken poetic text. Filmmaking significantly broadens the content of my work, and naturally cross-pollinates with my on going painting projects. Drawing is the core of my studio practice and the engine that drives everything I make. Artist Biography Miriam Hitchcock is a painter and experimental filmmaker whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2021 her paintings were profiled and featured on the cover of the book, Artists of the Bay Area Volume 1, published by Jen Tough...
