"Boulevard of Paris", 20th Century oil on canvas by Spanish artist E. Grau Sala

Located in Madrid, ES

EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 BOULEVARD OF PARIS signed “Grau Sala” (lower right) oil on canvas 25-1/2 x 32 inches (65 x 81 cm.) framed: 36-1/4 x 42-1/2 inches (92 x 108 cm.) Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...

"Moonlit River Scene", Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas by Luis Graner y Arrufi

By Luis Graner Y Arrufi

Located in Madrid, ES

LUIS GRANER Y ARRUFI Spanish, 1863 - 1929 MOONLIT RIVER SCENE signed and dated "L Graner 1925" (lower right) oil on canvas 20-1/8 x 30 inches (51 x 76 cm.) framed: 25-3/4 x 35-3/4 inches (65 x 90.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Barcelona, Spain Graner paints this work, Moonlit on the river, during his stay in the United States in the last stage of his artistic life, from 1910 to 1928, in full stage of maturity. This artwork reflects the constant search of the artist for the effects of light in his work. This persistent concern for light remains throughout his artistic life, which he learned in his Parisian stage under the influence of the painter Frances Platour. The silver light of the moon and the small lights at distance, which are tiny foci of artificial light, reflecting the river water, forming a chromatic range of greens, ocher and pearly that give a certain mystery to the composition, creating a modern approach to the landscape, by placing the two large trees at the edge of the river in the foreground Luís Graner y Arrufí, Spanish (1863–1929) was a Catalan painter in the Realistic style. He was born in Barcelona, and studied at the Escola de la Llotja from 1883, with Antoni Caba (color/composition) and Benet Mercadé (drawing). During his final year at school, he received a grant to study in Madrid, where he copied and learned from the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado. After that, supported by a fellowship, he moved to Paris and became a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Later, he returned to Barcelona, but continued to travel to cities throughout Europe, including Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf. Influenced by Richard Wagner's concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (Total Work of Art), he was motivated to create his own total art experience and organized the "Sala Mercè" (Mercy Hall) in Barcelona's Rambla District. The project involved contributors from every artistic discipline, including the new field of cinematography. The room was decorated by Antoni Gaudí. Other participants included Adrià Gual, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas...

YOSHITOMO NARA - LET'S TALK ABOUT "GLORY" Design modern pop art urban Japan

By Yoshitomo Nara

Located in Madrid, Madrid

Yoshitomo Nara - Let's talk about "Glory" Date of creation: 2011 Medium: Porcelain Edition: Open Size: Φ22 mm Condition: Brand new, inside its custom box Description: A Hasami ware porcelain plate reproducing Yoshitomo Nara's Let's Talk About "Glory" (2012), an acrylic-on-canvas painting where one of the artist's trademark children stares out with brow slightly furrowed and mouth set in a line that says she has heard what glory is and remains unconvinced. The original work, measuring roughly life-size, belongs to the period following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, when Nara's palette softened, his paint layers multiplied, and the angry scowls of his earlier figures gave way to a different register: heavy-lidded, searching, charged. "I was so depressed that I couldn't help feeling that what I'd been doing was totally meaningless," he later recalled. When the brushes finally came back out, the defiant scowls had gone. What replaced them was a gaze that holds more weight precisely because it asks for less. No raised fist, no bared fangs — just a pair of eyes that have seen something and are still deciding what to make of it. Like the rest of Nara's Hasami porcelain series, this plate is crafted in Nagasaki Prefecture, home to one of Japan's oldest ceramic traditions. Smooth and surprisingly heavy for its size, the body holds a print sharp enough to preserve the layered, almost translucent quality of Nara's post-2011 palette — the soft greens and muted flesh tones that replaced the flat, punchy colours of his earlier work. ABOUT THE ARTIST Yoshitomo Nara (奈良美智, b. 1959, Hirosaki) is one of the most influential Japanese artists working today. Round-headed children with piercing gazes populate his canvases and sculptures, images that have gone well beyond the art world to become a broader cultural phenomenon. Childhood in Aomori: Solitude, Nature, and Radio Waves Nara grew up in Hirosaki, a small city in Aomori Prefecture at the northern tip of Honshū. Both parents worked long hours, leaving young Yoshitomo to fend for himself after school. The Japanese have a word for children like him, kagikko, latchkey kids who come home to an empty house and learn to keep their own company. That early acquaintance with solitude runs through every painting. Look at any of Nara's figures and you will find a self-contained being who meets your eye with a steadiness that could be courage or could just as easily be vulnerability. During those solitary years, Western music reached him through the Far East Network (FEN), the U.S. Armed Forces radio station. Rock, folk, and later punk gave him a way to feel before painting ever did. As a young boy he bought his first record, Suzie Q, and has often said that album covers were his earliest art gallery. Later, he would design covers for Shonen Knife, R.E.M., and Bloodthirsty Butchers, and every exhibition he puts on is accompanied by a playlist of his own making. Education: Aichi and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf After earning a BFA (1985) and MFA (1987) at the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, Nara relocated to Germany to enrol at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, the same school that had shaped Joseph Beuys and Gerhard Richter. Under Neo-Expressionist painter A.R. Penck (1991–1993), he received one piece of advice that stuck: "Paint on the canvas as if you are drawing." Bold, pared-back figures, large rounded heads set against bare backgrounds, began to take shape on his canvases. At the Kunstakademie's annual student show in 1992, visitors saw The Girl with the Knife in Her Hand (1991), a painting that crystallised the tension running through all of Nara's work: an apparently innocent girl holding a tiny knife, a gesture he reads not as aggression but as self-defence against a threatening adult world. Once finished with his studies, Nara settled in Cologne in 1994 and set up in a former cotton mill. Cut off by the language barrier, he turned painting into a conversation with himself, and it was in that solitude that the gaze people remember long after leaving the gallery first appeared. Return to Japan and International Acclaim Twelve years later, Nara came back to Japan. I DON'T MIND, IF YOU FORGET ME. opened at the Yokohama Museum of Art in 2001 and toured five Japanese venues, including Hirosaki. MoMA New York acquired 130 of his drawings around the same time, and the travelling retrospective Nothing Ever Happens (2003–2005) cemented his reputation in the United States. Within the Japanese "New Pop" wave, he shared the stage with artists such as Takashi Murakami, Makoto Aida, and Mariko Mori...

"Interieur aux Fleurs Jaunes" 20th Century Oil on Canvas by Emilio Grau Sala

By Emilio Grau Sala

Located in Madrid, ES

EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 INTERIEUR AUX FLEURS JAUNES signed "Grau Sala" (lower left) signed again, located, dated and titled "Grau Sala, Paris 61, Interieur aux fleurs jaunes" (on the reverse) oil on canvas 15 x 18-1/4 inches (38 x 46 cm.) framed: 23-1/2 x 26-1/2 (59.5 x 67 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Parisian Collection Interieur aux fleurs jaunes This interior with two female figures where also the plans made in different colors are drawing the composition. The abundant pictorial material distributed in geometric portions, gives life to the tablecloth and mother and daughter figures, in black and white colors of the jacket, while the black line takes care of the environments so as not to separate them. The fruit bowl and flowers give a cheerful touch with their pastel tones. Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in "Sala Parés", Barcelona. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents. In the years 1930-33 he had painted under the influence of Cubism, especially that of Torres García. It is from that time a painting of the port of Barcelona, geometric and structural, which completely anticipated what would later be his work. His personality began fully painting watercolors and oils with a certain fantasy character, with a point of decorative instinct and themes full of naivety and grace. Romantic interiors, paddocks, port scenes, sailors, etc. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. Mediterranean because his work has the color and light of that land. He understood and assimilated impressionist painting very well, and for that reason he was never subject to the modules of a formulist realism, nor the sexigencias of the forms. In Paris he found the best environment to give us a fruitful and intense work, because he could use the expressive potential of French art to enrich it. All this made him a very esteemed artist everywhere where his work was known. He was also very often required to illustrate books and publications in Paris. Also his posters were very successful. He painted a large number of subjects, but perhaps the theme of horse racing is where you can see in a very clear way the joyful and optimistic life that was lived at that time. In this fabric there is an explosion of juicy and vivid colors full of ingenuity and simplicity in its composition. Only a teacher could turn the complicated into something simple and beautiful. Before this work we feel a deep emotion, the emotion of before starting a horse race. Joy and nervousness at the same time. Especially since it is a direct emotion. There are no intermediaries between our eyes and what the work intends to tell us. This is precisely what seduces and catches us of this painting. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum...
