1970s Jeff Cross Harmony Hollow Cast Bronze Brutalist - Soleri Style - Wind Bell

By Paolo Soleri

Located in St. Louis, MO

An exceptional and highly collectible vintage Southwestern studio-art wind bell, designed by artist Jeff Cross (d. 1977) for his legendary workshop, Harmony Hollow Bell Works, circa early 1970s. Hand-cast during the studio's foundational years in Arizona, this piece heavily channels the desert modernism and brutalist architectural form popularized by legendary architect and artist Paolo Soleri. The bell features a beautifully weighted, hand-cast bronze cap displaying a spectacular, naturally aged emerald verdigris patina that highlights its rich surface texture. Suspended from a beautifully sculpted, heavy double-curved cast bronze S-hook hanger, the bell's internal clapper terminates in a hand-cut, organically shaped sheet copper sail. Signed HH & BW bell works. A wonderful example of mid-century American studio metalwork, this bell produces a deep, resonant, and remarkably pure musical tone when caught by the wind. Offered in excellent vintage condition with an incredibly rich, completely uncleaned original patina and fully intact, structurally sound chain linkage. Jeff Cross founded Harmony Hollow Bell Works and began making his cast-bronze bells in 1969 in Arizona. Taught by his father—a metallurgist who managed foundries during World War II—Jeff was able to realize his dream of becoming a master bell-maker and creating high-quality bronze designs, running the studio until his passing in 1977. Jeff Cross bronze bell, Harmony Hollow wind chime, Paolo Soleri style bell, Arcosanti wind bell...

Paolo Soleri Cosanti Studio Bronze Architectural Wind Chime Bell (23.25" H)

By Paolo Soleri

Located in St. Louis, MO

A striking 23.25-inch cast bronze sculptural wind bell designed by visionary Italian-born architect, urban planner, and artist Paolo Soleri (1919–2013). Handcrafted at his celebrated Cosanti studio in Paradise Valley, Arizona, this mid-century architectural bell showcases an outstanding naturally weathered verdigris patina. Cast using Soleri’s signature earth-casting metal technique, the bell features geometric Brutalist relief motifs along the main sound chamber, suspended from an articulated sculptural top link and finished below with a folded geometric copper wind-sail fin. Features the official cast Cosanti studio monogram / cipher on the side of the bell chamber. A rare, out-of-production vintage casting featuring iconic Soleri design language that bridges functional art and kinetic sculpture. Paolo Soleri (1919-2013), the founder of Cosanti and Arcosanti, was an important artist, architecture, philosopher and urban planner. The Italian architect studied with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West in Arizona, and at Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin. He would make his home and studio, Cosanti, near Taliesin West. Mid-Century Glazed Terracotta Mermaid - Putti Garden Fountain by Winkle
Mid-Century Glazed Terracotta Mermaid - Putti Garden Fountain by Winkle

Mid-Century Glazed Terracotta Mermaid - Putti Garden Fountain by Winkle

Located in St. Louis, MO

An exceptional and highly whimsical vintage glazed terracotta garden fountain spouter, beautifully sculpted to depict a charming mermaid child—or putti of the sea—cradling an upturned fish. Attributed to the historic Winkle Terra Cotta Company of St. Louis, Missouri, this sculptural piece exemplifies the finest mid-century American architectural art pottery. It features a beautifully balanced, split bifurcated tail resting on an integrated, circular molded plinth base. The entire figure is enveloped in a magnificent, heavy cream-colored crackle glaze (craquelure), accented with subtle, organic speckling that lends a remarkably sophisticated, stone-like texture and a soft, lustrous sheen. Designed with both artistry and utility in mind, the fish's mouth serves as a functional water spout, perfectly positioned to accommodate internal plumbing for a dynamic water feature. The reverse lower base retains its original factory-stamped lettering beneath the thick glaze, heavily substantiating its St. Louis provenance. Whether utilized as a striking focal point over a classical wall fountain basin, nestled within a lush garden niche, or showcased indoors as an architectural statement piece, this captivating terracotta sculpture offers an enchanting blend of historic character, sculptural depth, and functional aquatic charm. A Legacy of American Architectural Art Pottery Established in 1883 by Joseph Winkle, the Winkle Terra Cotta Company of St. Louis, Missouri, was one of the premier giants of the late 19th and early 20th-century American ceramic industry. Located in the historic, clay-rich Cheltenham district, Winkle transformed raw Missouri clay into highly celebrated architectural embellishments and garden ornaments found across the country. While famous for manufacturing complex, sculpted facade elements for iconic historic landmarks—most notably fabricating the legendary terra cotta ornamentation for Louis Sullivan’s masterwork, the Wainwright Building—the firm also operated highly successful specialty "side lines". From their 6-acre manufacturing plant, Winkle deployed a staff of master, European-trained sculptors and dedicated ceramic chemists to produce fine stock catalog garden statuary, fountains, jardinieres, and urns. Key Historical & Collector NotesMastery of Glaze: Under the direction of specialized ceramic engineers, Winkle pioneered thick, lustrous, weather-resistant cream, ivory, and polychrome glazes. Over decades of exposure, these heavy glazes naturally develop a beautiful, sought-after crackle patina (craquelure). The Sculptural Style: Because the company worked closely with the leading architects of the Gilded Age and the Mid-Century transition, their garden wares consistently display highly refined, classically proportioned motifs—including whimsical putti, sea life, and classical revivals. Market Desirability: Authentic, factory-stamped pieces from the St. Louis terra cotta boom are highly coveted by architectural historians and interior designers alike for their exceptional durability, rich historic provenance, and sculptural depth. Outdoor Statuary, Architectural Salvage, Patio Decor, Poolside Ornament, Solarium Accent, Courtyard Sculpture, Wall Spout, Water Feature, Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, Grandmillennial Style, Classical Revival, Eclectic Chic, Coastal Decor, Grotesque, Mythological Art, Ceramic Sculpture, Fired Clay, Weathered Finish, Majolica Style, Faïence, Stoneware, Aged Patina, St. Louis Pottery, Missouri Art...

Mid-Century Architectural Pottery "Double Cone" Planter by LaGardo Tackett

By Lagardo Tackett, Architectural Pottery

Located in St. Louis, MO

Mid-Century Modern Architectural Pottery sculptural "Double Cone" Planter by LaGardo Tackett , rarely seen double cone version with wider base than top in a white glaze. Provenance 1960s MCM building of the Odd Fellows Association Hall - St. Louis. It was used with sand for an ashtray , seen in photos 5 & 6. The 1960s MCM modification to an existing building was designed by architect William E. Duncan and demolished in the summer of 2020. Duncan not only selected these planters , the entire hall, had Saarinen , Eames, Nelson, Howard Miller and Nessen designs. The condition is good, only with minor scuffs, no chips and light staining to interior as seen in photos. Stamped Architectural Pottery made in the USA. When the planter is on its side, it reminds me of the famous brass drawer pull on Paul McCobb designed furniture. Building & Rendering Odd Fellows Association Hall at 3765 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis Mo. designed by William E. Duncan and Associate Architect Lawrence H. Smith , Delineation by Harry A, Osborn Demolished in 2020 If your into Architecture, Search for this MCM church...
