This clock, magnificent of scale and conception, numbers amongst Denière's most impressive creations. Denière delivered clocks to the Emperor at the château du Fontainebleau in 1857 and 1861. Both are modelled with playful cherubs pulling foliate garlands which show the same designer as those to the present clock. They can be attributed to the sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824 –1887) who from the 1850s produced for Denière models for candelabra, clocks, jardinieres and fireplace ornaments. A Fine & Most Impressive French Gilt, Patinated Bronze and White Marble Mantel Clock by Lepaute of Paris, France. Of impressive scale and refined Neoclassical design, the circular white enamel dial signed Lepaute à Paris within a gilt-bronze bezel surmounted by a finely cast and chased gilt bronze eagle with outspread wings perched on a laurel wreath. The clock flanked by two seated classical figures in dark patinated bronze, each reading from an open book, symbolising Knowledge and Wisdom. The central plinth panel finely cast with cherubs in relief, set upon a rectangular white marble base mounted with ormolu friezes of scrolling foliage and masks, raised on toupie feet. The Lepaute family were among the most renowned horologists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, supplying timepieces to the French royal court and many important clients of the Empire period. The fine casting and crisp chasing of this example, combined with its balanced architectural design, exemplify the high quality of Parisian clockmaking of the period. Grand Regulator World's Fair Clock François Linke Circa 1900 Widely regarded as the greatest sculptural clock ever created, this monumental régulateur by François Linke was conceived as a statement for the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition, a moment when the world’s finest artisans competed on an international stage. Linke, the most celebrated ébéniste of the Belle Époque, was awarded the prestigious gold medal for his display, which critics described as “the biggest event in the history of furnishing art in the year 1900.” Designed in collaboration with the sculptor Léon Messagé, the clock exemplifies Linke’s ambition to elevate furniture and timepieces to the realm of fine art. The clock represents over a decade of design and craftsmanship. Only six examples of this model were ever completed due to the extraordinary labor and cost involved. Building just one had a production cost of 22,966 francs, the equivalent of approximately eight years' wages for the average French worker in 1900. The surface of this impressive antique clock is embellished with impressive pink guilloche enamel panels, framed with plain broad sterling silver borders. The upper portion of the enamel clock is fitted with an angular carrying handle. The enamel dial of the clock is ornamented with black hour numerals, encircled with plain black chapter ring of minute markers and fitted with shaped pink hands. The clock, crafted during the late nineteenth century—though the malachite finish is later—is inspired by a famous eighteenth-century original. The clock is of traditional form, which a cubic clock case inset with an enamel dial and a gilt bronze bezel cast with signs of the zodiac. The central section of the clock includes a window, which reveals the pendulum inside, while the lower section is in the form of a plinth.
