Carol Wax originally trained to be a classical musician at the Manhattan School of Music but fell in love with printmaking. Soon after she began engraving mezzotints she was asked by the renowned print dealer Sylvan Cole to exhibit at Associated American Artists Gallery, launching her career as a professional artist/printmaker. With the publication of her book, The Mezzotint: History and Technique, published by Abrams, 1990 and 1996, Carol added author and teacher to her credits. In the ensuing years she has expanded her repertoire of mediums beyond printmaking into other works on paper and painting. The handmade paper shows age toning, surface marks, pinholes, handling wear, creasing and irregular deckled edges. There is old tape or adhesive residue visible along the upper edge, with small nicks, roughness and wear to the outer margins. The painted image remains fresh, atmospheric and decorative. **Description:** A subtle 20th century European School watercolour landscape, painted on textured handmade paper and depicting an open countryside view with green fields, distant buildings and a low wooded hillside. The composition is arranged in soft horizontal layers, with pale green fields stretching across the foreground and a darker tree-covered slope rising to the left. The painting is particularly appealing for its quiet modernist treatment of landscape. Rather than describing the scene in exact detail, the artist reduces the countryside into broad washes of green, ochre, blue-grey and brown. The distant buildings and horizon line are lightly suggested, giving the work the feel of a travel study or plein air sketch, focused more on atmosphere and colour than strict topographical precision.
