This is an original rare and extremely collectible 1st royal octavo edition John James Audubon hand-colored lithograph entitled "American Swan", No. 77, Plate 384, from Audubon's "Birds of America". It was lithographed, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen and published in Philadelphia between 1840-1844. It depicts an adult white American Swan swimming in a body of water. Plants with yellow flowers are in the foreground and hills are in the background. This original rare first edition hand-colored Audubon bird lithograph has a mildly wavy lower edge of the paper where it was previously bound. It is otherwise in excellent condition. The sheet measures 6.63" x 10.13". The original text pages 226-234 are included. John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a naturalist and artist. He was initially unsuccessful financially prior to the publication of his famous work “The Birds of America”, spending time in debtor’s prison, once stabbing a disgruntled investor in self-defense. However, his obsession with birds and art motivated him to persist in his goal of documenting every bird in America via his watercolor paintings and publishing his works for all to enjoy. Audubon's first illustrations were published in a large elephant folio size. Due to their expense they were purchased in rather small numbers by the wealthy. To reach a larger audience, Audubon, with the help of his sons and J. T. Bowen, published a smaller octavo sized lithograph version, which were much more affordable. With the success of his bird projects, Audubon then turned his attention to four-legged animals. He explored the Missouri River in 1843 sketching the four-legged animals he encountered in their natural setting. His expedition covered some of the same regions recently explored by Lewis and Clark, traveling from present day Alaska to Mexico. Audubon realized that this was an opportunity to document these animals in the still relatively pristine American wilderness, before man encroached on their environment. Between 1845 and 1848, Audubon and his sons John Woodhouse Audubon and Victor Gifford Audubon produced a set of elephant folio sized lithographs that were primarily engraved and hand colored by J. T. Bowen in Philadelphia. The publication, which included text descriptions of the animals was published 3 years before Audubon died. As with the birds, this was followed by a three-volume set of 155 octavo-sized plates entitled “The Quadrupeds of North America” completed and published by Audubon’s sons, John, Jr. and Victor. Created circa 1940 by José Morell Macías, this original French-language travel poster promotes the Canary Islands as one of Spain’s most colourful and distinctive destinations. BIOGRAPHY OF ED MELL Born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1942, Ed Mell started drawing as soon as he could hold a pencil. Influenced by his older brother Frank’s drawings of World War II combat aircraft and soldiers, Mell found his own hobby designing model automobiles. His interest in automobiles continued into high school, where Mell could usually be found drawing one of his friend’s cars or watching car commercials for future drawing ideas.Graduating from Phoenix Junior College with an Associated Arts Degree, he enrolled in The Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles to pursue his interest in illustration. During his four years of study there Mell broadened his artistic technique and learned to express his artistic conviction. In November, 1967, he accepted a position as a junior art director at Kenyon and Eckhardt, a major New York advertising firm. However, in only 10 months Mell found that the advertising world smothered his creativity. Considering a move back to Los Angeles, he called an old friend, Skip Andrews, who assured him that work there was scarce, and that he himself was planning to move to New York. A few months later Mell and Andrews established their own illustration firm, which they named Sagebrush Studios. Sagebrush Studios became an immediate success, with major corporate clients such as Cheerios and RCA, and illustrations appearing in Esquire and Psychology Today. But success had its price, and within three years the Arizona native was struggling with the fast-paced New York lifestyle and pressures of the advertising business. Mell jumped at the opportunity to teach summer classes in silk screening and drawing on the Hopi Reservation at Hotevilla, Arizona. When the summer session was complete, he took a hard look at his future and decided to get back to his Arizona roots. A few months later he and Andrews closed Sagebrush Studios. Returning to Phoenix, Mell and his younger brother decided to open their own illustration business. But the Phoenix market for illustration was in less demand than Mell was used to, so during breaks he began sketching landscapes using colored pencils. Colored pencils slowly turned into paints and by 1978 he had made the transition from commercial artist to landscape painter. Throughout the years, Mell has constantly changed the subjects he depicts and the techniquess to capture them. Beginning specifically with southwest landscapes, he has moved to other southwestern subjets including cowboys, horses, longhorn cattle and cactuses. Although best known for his oil paintings, he also developed an avid body of collectors for his bronze sculptures. Collectors are often left with a unique visual impression when they witness first-hand the tangling of reality with imagination. Ed Mell has won numerous awards and honors. His art has been exhibited in nine museum shows, including the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art, Scottsdale Center for the Arts, Mesa Southwest Museum, and the Rockwell-Corning Museum of Modern Art. More than 40 corporate and private collections have acquired his paintings and sculptures, and his life as an artist has been chronicled in major art publications. Original circa 1930 circus and music-hall poster advertising the spectacular balancing act “Miss Aboko and His Indian,” proclaimed at the bottom as the “Only One in the World.” The extraordinary composition presents a costumed performer balancing an enormous cannon vertically upon the head. Flames emerge from the cannon’s muzzle, suggesting that the weapon was discharged during the performance. Behind its large wheels appears a Native American figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing the mysterious second member of the act mentioned in the title. The unusual phrase “Miss Aboko and His Indian” is printed exactly as it appears on the poster. Contemporary entertainment notices, however, referred to the attraction as “Miss Aboko and her Indian,” indicating that the masculine pronoun was most probably a printing or translation error. Such inconsistencies were not uncommon on posters produced for travelling international performers. The extremely narrow vertical format emphasises the seemingly impossible height and precarious balance of the stunt. The cannon forms a powerful central axis, rising from the performer towards the upper edge of the sheet. A restrained turquoise background allows the silver machinery, red and ochre costume and dramatic feathered headdress to stand out with remarkable clarity. The performer’s fringed costume, decorated with portraits and Western-inspired details, reflects the fascination with American frontier imagery that appeared frequently in European circus and music-hall entertainment during the early twentieth century. The claim “Only One in the World” belongs to the wonderfully exaggerated language of circus advertising, presenting the act as an attraction without equal. No artist or printer is identified on the poster. Its bold illustration, theatrical subject and imposing elongated format nevertheless make it a particularly memorable example of interwar circus advertising.
