Located in Soquel, CA

"Hey Did We Scratch?" - Abstract Expressionist Composition Detailed and layered composition by Leroy W. Parker (American, 1941). This piece is divided into a checkerboard, with a variety of overlaid patterns and textures. There are several types of handmade paper applied to the canvas, likely made by Parker himself. Signed "Leroy Wheeler Parker" in the lower right corner. "#1" and an up arrow are written on verso. Tag on verso with artist info, title, media, and date. No frame, but the edges of the canvas are painted for a frame-less display. Leroy W. Parker (American, b. 1941) is an artist from Oklahoma who now resides in Lafayette, California. Parker earned his BFA in painting from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1966, and then went on to earn his MFA in 1968 from the same institution. He is a Professor of Art at San Jose State University. He has taught classes in fine arts, life drawing, ceramics, paper making (which he instituted in 1984), and sculpture since 1969. Parker has also served on the State Art Commission for sculptural grants. One of his pieces is held in the San Jose Museum of Art. Selected Exhibitions: Drawings and Paintings - ACCI Gallery, Berkeley, CA - 1974 “Artistry in Clay” - Forge Patio Art Gallery, Lafayette, CA - 1980 “A Most Elegant Show” - Sunshine Art Gallery, Fair Oaks, CA - 1982 “Flora” - Harcourts Contemporary, San Francisco, CA - 1983 Idea Gallery, Sacramento, CA - 1985 “Multi-Media Man” - Sacramento Center for Textile Arts, Sacramento, CA - 1994 “The Art of the Family” - Works Gallery, San Jose, CA - 1999 Artist’s Statement: I was born in Eagletown, Oklahoma to Southern Baptist parents, and my father was a preacher. We were two boys and six girls in the family. The most mundane things were magical and special to me. I liked to draw, color, make things, and plant things. I loved the woods and the earth, and watching storms with thunder and lightning. We moved from Oklahoma when I was 11. In the late 1950s, I attended Oakland Technical High School where I met artist Sam Richardson...

"My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment. A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland. The paintings are, in the end, meditations on the relationship between the protagonists in a wordless drama. In my paintings, I use a cold wax medium...

Untitled (Study for Līnea), 2021

By Mary Early

Located in Washington, DC

Poured beeswax work by Mary Early from her "Study for Līnea" series. "The production, or “pouring,” of beeswax elements has become a meditative process that is integral to my art practice, serving as an observation of time, materials, and space. The raw beeswax I use has taken its form at the end of a long series of natural processes followed by a manufacturing process, and once it is in my hands, the studio becomes a factory. I apply my own methods of transforming the material by casting the beeswax into three-dimensional forms. Once I have fixed both a place and a time in the future for a potential installation, I begin to determine how the beeswax lines will take their aggregated shape in that space and, simultaneously, how many lines might be manufactured for that particular space in the amount of time available." Mary Early (born 1975, Washington, DC) lives and works in Washington, DC. She studied visual art, film, and video at Bennington College, and her work has been exhibited at the United States Botanic Garden, Washington Project for the Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Second Street Gallery (Charlottesville, VA), Hemphill Fine Arts (Washington DC,) the Austrian Cultural Forum (Washington DC), Galerie Im Ersten (Vienna, Austria), Kloster Schloss Salem (Salem, Germany), Kunstlerbund Tubingen (Tubingen, Germany), and the American University Museum (Washington DC) among other regional and national galleries. Her early work incorporated formed concrete, tarpaper and paraffin wax, fabricated wood structures, and, increasingly over the years, surfaces coated with wax as a method of preserving or concealing an object within. Recent works have relied solely on solid forms cast in wax, abandoning the use of any permanent armature. Temporary installations are guided by schematic drawings and plans, which then serve as a permanent record. In 2014 she exhibited her first large-scale installation of wax lines at Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA, followed by temporary installations in response to various historical sites in Salem, Germany (2016) and Tubingen Germany (2017). In 2017 she participated in the exhibition “Twist-Layer-Pour” at the American University Museum, which included Untitled [Curve], an installation of thousands of beeswax lines assembled on the floor of the museum. In spring 2018 she was commissioned to create a temporary installation at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, Sun Valley Idaho. This work took the form of two intersecting curtains of hanging beeswax lines bisecting a 12’ foot x 18’ foot room, providing an immersive and enclosed viewing space. Early’s work is included in the collections of the US Department of State/Embassy of Panama, Kimpton Hotels, and the District of Columbia Art Bank among other public and private collections. She is a recipient of the Artist Fellowship Grant from the DC Commission on Arts & Humanities, Washington DC (2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2011, 2009, 2007). Early is the director of HEMPHILL Fine Arts, Washington, DC, and serves on the boards of Hamiltonian Artists and Washington Sculptors Group. She handles the work of contemporary artists and artist estates, including the work of William Christenberry, Colby Caldwell, Hedieh Javanshir Ilchi, Linling Lu, Mingering Mike, Robin Rose, Renée Stout...

A la Guerre - Original Mixed Media by Laura D'Andrea - 2018

A la Guerre - Original Mixed Media by Laura D'Andrea - 2018

By Laura D'Andrea

Located in Roma, IT

À la guerre is an original artwork realized by Laura D'Andrea in 2018. Oil, acrylic and carbon on canvas. Hand signed by the artist on the lower right margin. Perfect conditions. The artwork, realized by the artist with oil, acrylic colors, and carbon on canvas, shows an abstract composition with circular shapes. The dominant color is violet, yet there are also some blue and green shades. The title of the artwork recalls a battle: indeed, we can visualize some horses among the abstract lines. The composition suggests a sensation of movement. Laura D’Andrea is an Italian artist and engraver. She was born in Sicily, where she currently lives and works. She studied printing techniques and especially xylography at the Academies of Fine Arts in Rome and Urbino, as well as Philosophy and Literature at the University of Grenoble. Her first exhibition was “La mia Sicilia” (My Sicily) in 1969 at the Galleria Flaccovio in Palermo, where, a few years later, she exhibited with “Hippies a Londra” (Hippies in London). In the 1980s, she moved to Il Cairo in Egypt, where she studied Arabic calligraphy and found the opportunity to realize a series of graphic works to be exhibited at the Egypt Academy of Rome. In those years, she dedicated herself to doing research on the historical Sicilian Baroque art and culture. Between 1986 and 1988, her solo show “L’Immaginario nel Barocco” (The Baroque Culture) took place at the Galleria Artivisive in Rome, at the Museum and Library of Ursino, at the Recupero in Sicily, and at the European Parliament in Strasbourgh. In 2002, she participated in the exhibition “Memoria Greca nel Mediterraneo” (Greek memory in the Mediterranean) in Sicily. In 2007, she exhibited in Rome and in Saudi Arabia. Between 2011 and 2015, she started exploring the world of jazz music, which would become an important subject for her future artworks; in those same years, she exhibited her works in England and in Belgium. Her artworks represent a leap in the Mediterranean Sea, between Sicilian and Arab cultures. Laura D’Andrea loves jazz music: on her canvases, we can perceive the sounds of places and people far in both place and time. Other important elements of her works are calligraphy and Archeoscrittura. Archeoscrittura is a fascinating practice consisting of artists exploring their own genetic memories for finding signs of archaic scriptures. Laura D'Andrea draws inspiration from the depths of her personal memory, and from the study of symbols found in the Archaic writing in the Mediterranean. Her works can be viewed at the Museum of Modern Art Pecci in Florence; at the Museum of woodcut Carpi in Modena; at the Museum of Modern Art Maga in Varese, Milan; at the Museum of Modern Art in Valencia, Spain; at the Museum of Art Mart in Trento and Rovereto with the donation of Mirella Bentivoglio.
