Essay: Painted during Carl Johansson’s journey to Tenerife in 1894, Lavaklippstrand presents the volcanic Atlantic coastline as an austere study of rock, water and light. Jagged formations of dark lava dominate the foreground and middle distance, breaking the surface of the sea in an irregular progression towards the horizon. Behind them, the coast dissolves gradually into mist, while the almost colourless sky occupies the upper half of the composition. The painting is unusually restrained for a landscape executed during a period when Johansson had recently encountered the brighter palette of modern French painting. Here, instead, he deliberately reduces the scene to a near monochrome range of blacks, greys, browns and white. Johansson was born in Härnösand in 1863 and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm between 1882 and 1885, where his teachers included Edvard Perséus and the landscape painter Per Daniel Holm. He belonged to the generation of Swedish artists that increasingly looked beyond academic landscape conventions during the 1880s and 1890s. A teacher, Wakeham taught drawing and painting at Stanford and art history and oil painting at College of San Mateo. He has conducted workshops, taught master classes, and juried exhibitions in California, Nevada, New Mexico, Hawaii, New York, Washington, D.C., and Ontario, Canada. About this work: An extraordinary example of pyro-engraving by Félix Pardo de Tavera, one of the most accomplished Filipino sculptors of the nineteenth century, this work combines the artist’s remarkable technical ingenuity with classical European Belle Époque elegance. Born in Manila in 1859, Pardo de Tavera achieved international fame at a time when few Filipino artists enjoyed comparable success abroad. His distinguished career brought him medals at major international exhibitions including Madrid, Paris, Barcelona, and eventually St. Louis, where he received a gold medal at the 1904 World's Fair. Although primarily working in bronze, Pardo de Tavera also experimented with unconventional materials, such as this richly textured wood panel with pyro-engraved details. Depicting a young Roman woman in profile, her flowing robes accented with vivid red and delicate botanical ornament, the composition reflects the late 19th century fascination with antiquity. Pardo de Tavera belonged to one of the Philippines' most prominent intellectual families and was a remarkable figure in the country's artistic and cultural history. After studying at Manila's Academia de Dibujo y Pintura, he moved to Paris, where he earned a medical degree in 1882 while pursuing his passion for sculpture. His artistic education brought him into contact with leading European masters, including Mariano Benlliure and, according to biographical accounts, Auguste Rodin.
