Expressionist Figurative Paintings

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

Serenity
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Serenity is an original painting by Bright Toh. Bright created Serenity Acrylic on a 27.5W by 35.4H inches primed canvas. The artwork "Serenity" is a bright and colorful depiction of a lion head and rose flower, created entirely by a human hand. The combination of these two natural elements results in a stunning and harmonious image that exudes a sense of calm and tranquility. The lion head is the central focus of the artwork, rendered in vibrant hues of orange and yellow that evoke a sense of warmth and vitality. The lion's mane, which surrounds its powerful features, is depicted in a range of shades, from soft pastel pinks and purples to fiery reds and oranges. The overall effect is one of movement and fluidity as if the lion's mane is a living thing in and of itself. Intertwined with the lion's mane is a delicate rose flower, rendered in shades of pink and red that complement the warm tones of the lion's fur. The rose seems to emerge from the lion's mane as if it is a natural extension of the animal's power and beauty. The combination of these two elements creates a powerful visual metaphor, suggesting that beauty and strength can coexist in perfect harmony. Despite the boldness of its colors and imagery, "Serenity" also conveys a sense of calm and tranquility. The lion's expression is serene, and the rose is depicted in a way that suggests a sense of peace and stillness. The artwork invites the viewer to slow down and take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and to find solace in its quiet strength. Overall, "Serenity" is a powerful and evocative work of art that combines elements of nature in a way that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. Its vibrant colors and bold imagery capture the viewer's attention, while its underlying sense of peace and harmony invites reflection and contemplation. It is a testament to the beauty and power of the natural world and a reminder of the importance of finding serenity in our busy and often chaotic lives. Desires 1
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The painting titled "Desires 1" is a beautiful work of art that depicts two women sitting across from each other, engaged in what seems to be a deep and meaningful conversation. The painting, created by Esinulo Chiamaka Praise, features an older woman and a younger woman, each holding a white flower, which adds a sense of purity and serenity to the scene. The older woman, who appears to be in his 50s, and the younger woman, who looks to be in his 20s, are both dressed in a more simple dress. Both women are seated on chairs, with their faces turned towards each other in a relaxed yet focused manner. The title of the painting, "Desires 1," adds an element of intrigue and mystery to the scene, as it hints at the possibility of underlying desires and motivations between the two women. However, the painting does not provide any clear answers or indications of what those desires might be, leaving the interpretation up to the viewer. Wisdom is gathered from lessons learned from experiences. Time and age guide a man through life as regards choices or wants... One possible interpretation of the painting is that it represents the passing of knowledge and wisdom from one generation to the next. The older woman appears to be sharing something with the younger woman, who listens intently and respectfully. The white flowers that both women are holding could be seen as symbols of purity and innocence, representing the purity of the knowledge and wisdom being shared. What you want today may not be what you would want tomorrow, wants change with time. Experiences and age have an influence on choices. Responsibilities are given with time. What is your desire now? Another interpretation of the painting is that it represents a deep and meaningful conversation between two people who share a close and intimate relationship. The fact that both women are holding white flowers suggests a sense of purity and love between them, while their relaxed and focused expressions indicate a sense of comfort and ease in each other's presence. In terms of technique, the painting is expertly executed, with rich colors and intricate details that bring the scene to life. Keating's use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and dimensionality, while the placement of the two men in the center of the painting draws the viewer's attention to their faces and the emotions that are portrayed in them. Overall, "Desires 3" is a beautiful and thought-provoking painting that captures the essence of a deep and meaningful conversation between two people. It is a testament to the power of art to evoke emotion and inspire reflection, leaving the viewer with a sense of curiosity and wonder about the motivations and desires of the two women in the painting. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. Esosa
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Esosa, which means "gift of God," is not only a name but a powerful reminder of the potential within every girl. As she lays down with a book she epitomizes the essence of her name - a vessel of knowledge, waiting to be filled with wisdom and understanding. This simple yet profound act symbolizes her commitment to continuous learning and her unwavering belief in the power of education. In many parts of the world, girls have historically been denied access to education, limiting their opportunities and potential. But Esosa's unwavering dedication is changing that narrative, one page at a time. She firmly believes that empowering girls through education not only benefits them but also enriches their families, communities, and societies at large. Esosa's journey towards championing girl child education began with her own experiences and challenges. Growing up in a society where traditional gender roles often hindered girls' access to education, she encountered numerous obstacles. However, with the support of her family, particularly her parents, who recognized the importance of education for all, Esosa pursued her dreams relentlessly. Through her educational journey, Esosa witnessed the transformative power of knowledge. Education broadened her perspective, nurtured critical thinking, and instilled in her a sense of purpose. She became acutely aware of the vast potential locked within every girl and the boundless possibilities that education can unlock. With an unyielding determination, Esosa embarked on a mission to inspire and empower girls around her. She started organizing educational workshops and mentorship programs, encouraging girls to pursue their dreams fearlessly. Through her efforts, she advocated for equal educational opportunities, fighting against the prevailing gender biases and societal norms. Esosa's impact extended beyond her immediate surroundings. She utilized technology and social media to reach out to a broader audience, spreading her message of girl child education far and wide. Her story, her beliefs, and her passion resonated with many, attracting like-minded individuals and organizations that joined hands to support her cause. As she continues to lay down with her book, Esosa sets an example for girls everywhere - an example of resilience, empowerment, and the courage to defy limitations. She emphasizes that knowledge is not a privilege but a right that should be accessible to all, irrespective of gender or social background. In her vision for a better world, every girl receives quality education, unlocking their potential to become change-makers, leaders, and contributors to society. Esosa envisions a world where girls are empowered to break barriers, shatter glass ceilings, and rewrite the narrative for future generations. To all those who come across her story, Esosa's message is clear: investing in girl child education is an investment in a brighter and more equitable future. It is a journey that transforms lives, breaks cycles of poverty, and builds thriving communities. So, let us all join hands with Esosa and countless other advocates for girl child education. Together, we can create a world where every girl receives the gift of education, embraces her potential, and fulfills her dreams. Let us believe wholeheartedly in the power of education and seek knowledge to shape a better tomorrow - a tomorrow where every girl is an Esosa, a true gift of God. Bored
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The artwork "Bored" is a stunning creation that weaves a delicate tapestry of dreams and reality. The artist has skillfully captured the essence of a young girl's imagination, allowing the viewer to peer into the depths of her thoughts and aspirations. The lady's posture exudes an air of calm contemplation, but her eyes tell a different story. They glimmer with a hint of mischief and wonder, hinting at the magical world she has conjured up in her mind. In the background of the painting, the artist has masterfully depicted a vision of northern horsemen, galloping majestically across vast, snow-covered plains. These horsemen, clad in traditional attire, symbolize strength, courage, and freedom - qualities that the young girl may yearn for or admire. The contrast between the girl's stillness and the dynamic scene she envisions creates a captivating juxtaposition, emphasizing the power of imagination and the allure of the unknown. As the viewer gazes at the artwork, they are drawn into a narrative of the young girl's daydream. Perhaps she is longing for adventure, yearning to explore the far-off lands of the North, or maybe she seeks to break free from the mundane routine of everyday life. The painting stirs the imagination, leaving room for personal interpretations and connections. The title "Bored" takes on a deeper meaning in light of the young girl's reverie. It hints at the idea that boredom can be a catalyst for creativity and imagination. In moments of monotony, the mind often seeks escape, finding solace in the realm of daydreams and fantasies. This painting serves as a reminder that boredom is not necessarily a negative emotion, but a gateway to exploration and self-discovery. The artist's technique in "Bored" is nothing short of mesmerizing. The use of vibrant colors and soft brushstrokes adds a touch of surrealism, enhancing the dreamlike quality of the artwork. The girl's expression is a masterpiece in itself, evoking empathy and inviting the viewer to empathize with her world of dreams. In a world where we are constantly surrounded by distractions and technology, "Bored" reminds us of the power of introspection and the beauty of allowing our minds to wander freely. It encourages us to embrace moments of stillness and delve into the depths of our imagination, just like the young girl in the painting. Art has the incredible ability to transport us to different realities, and "Bored" achieves just that. It invites us to envision our own northern horsemen or any other fantastic tales that lie within our hearts. It celebrates the essence of childhood wonder, where even the simplest of moments can become the foundation for extraordinary journeys. In conclusion, "Bored" is an exquisite artwork that captures the essence of a young girl's daydream about northern horsemen. It stands as a testament to the power of imagination and the art of storytelling through visual means. As we gaze upon this masterpiece, let us also be reminded of the beauty of introspection, the allure of dreams, and the magic that lies within every one of us. Brothers 1
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The bond between brothers, whether by blood or through the strong connection forged by friendship, is truly special. It's amazing how we can find support and solace in those who may not be family but have chosen to be there for us. Martin Luther rightly said, "We have flown the air like birds and swum the sea like fishes, but we have yet to learn the simple act of walking the earth like brothers". In a collective society, it's crucial for us to embrace the concept of being our brother's keeper. By nurturing a sense of empathy and compassion, we can make a positive difference in each other's lives. Whether it's lending a helping hand, offering a listening ear, or providing support during challenging times, being there for one another creates a stronger and more supportive community. Let us always cherish and celebrate the unbreakable bond we share with our brothers, both by blood and through the deep connections we form along life's journey. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels loved, supported, and appreciated. Desires 3
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The painting titled "Desires 3" is a beautiful work of art that depicts two men sitting across from each other, engaged in what seems to be a deep and meaningful conversation. The painting, created by Esinulo Chiamaka Praise, features an older man and a younger man, each holding a white flower, which adds a sense of purity and serenity to the scene. The older man, who appears to be in his 50s, and the younger man, who looks to be in his 20s, are both dressed in a more casual shirt and pants. Both men are seated on chairs, with their faces turned towards each other in a relaxed yet focused manner. The title of the painting, "Desires 3," adds an element of intrigue and mystery to the scene, as it hints at the possibility of underlying desires and motivations between the two men. The older man appears to be sharing something with the younger man, who listens intently and respectfully. The white flowers that both men are holding could be seen as symbols of purity and innocence, representing the purity of the knowledge and wisdom being shared. Another interpretation of the painting is that it represents a deep and meaningful conversation between two people who share a close and intimate relationship. The fact that both men are holding white flowers suggests a sense of purity and love between them, while their relaxed and focused expressions indicate a sense of comfort and ease in each other's presence. It is a testament to the power of art to evoke emotion and inspire reflection, leaving the viewer with a sense of curiosity and wonder about the motivations and desires of the two men in the painting.
