Expressionist Figurative Paintings

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

Speak Up
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
In "Speak Up," Bright Toh employs unconventional imagery by merging the head of a cow with a human body. This unexpected combination challenges our preconceived notions and encourages us to look beyond the surface, prompting a deeper exploration of the artwork's underlying message. The cow, often associated with docility and domesticity, takes on a new meaning as it becomes a vessel for the human form, suggesting that even the most unexpected individuals possess the potential for individual expression. The artwork's bright and lively color palette serves as a visual feast for the eyes. Bold hues, such as vibrant blues, fiery red, and vivid greens, infuse the composition with energy and captivate the viewer's attention. The oversized raincoat worn by the figure adds an element of whimsy and intrigue, symbolizing protection and shelter from external influences. It also serves as a metaphorical cloak, representing the need for individuals to find their unique voices and confidently express their ideas and opinions. "Speak Up" serves as a poignant reminder of the significance of individual expression in our society. In a world often characterized by conformity and the suppression of diverse viewpoints, the artwork encourages viewers to embrace their unique perspectives and have the courage to speak up. It celebrates the value of authenticity and reminds us that every individual has a story to tell, a voice to be heard, and ideas that can shape the world around us. Through the fusion of a cow head and a human body, "Speak Up" challenges the traditional notion of what is considered "normal" or acceptable. The artwork serves as a call to question societal norms and encourages viewers to challenge the status quo, promoting a culture of inclusivity and acceptance. It invites us to reconsider the limitations we impose on ourselves and others, reminding us that diversity and individuality should be celebrated rather than suppressed. Bright Toh's artwork, "Speak Up," stands as a vibrant and thought-provoking testament to the power of individual expression. Through the striking fusion of a cow head and a human body, the artwork challenges conventional wisdom and calls for a celebration of authenticity and diversity. By embracing our unique voices and perspectives, we contribute to a richer and more vibrant society. "Speak Up" serves as a reminder to break free from the constraints of conformity and find the courage to express our true selves, amplifying the power of our individuality in the world. Nirvana
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The artwork titled "Nirvana" is a stunning representation of a woman with a sophisticated hairstyle and a fabric costumed suit. This piece of art is an unapologetic celebration of feminine power and grace, and Fatunmbi Anjolaoluwa Grace has expertly captured the essence of womanhood in every brushstroke. The sophisticated hairstyle of the woman in the artwork is a testament to the artist's skill and attention to detail. The intricate braids and weaves symbolize the many challenges that women face in their daily lives, yet they still manage to maintain their composure and elegance. The hairstyle is a reflection of the woman's inner strength and determination. The fabric costumed suit adds another layer of depth to the artwork. The suit is designed to fit the woman's body perfectly, highlighting her feminine form and celebrating her womanhood. The fabrics used are luxurious and elegant, further emphasizing the woman's sophistication and grace. The name "Nirvana" is fitting for this artwork, as it symbolizes a state of perfect happiness and enlightenment. The woman in the artwork exudes a sense of peace and contentment as if she has reached a state of enlightenment and is at one with herself and the world around her. Some may argue that this artwork objectifies women, but I firmly believe that it celebrates their beauty and strength. Women should be proud of their femininity and should not be ashamed to celebrate it. Fatunmbi Anjolaoluwa Grace has created a stunning representation of a woman who is comfortable in her own skin and is not afraid to express her feminine power and grace. Furthermore, the artist's choice to create this artwork with a woman of color is significant. The representation of diverse women in art is essential in promoting inclusivity and challenging the traditional beauty standards that have been set by society. In conclusion, the artwork titled "Nirvana" is a beautiful celebration of feminine power and grace. The artist has expertly captured the essence of womanhood in every brushstroke, from the sophisticated hairstyle to the fabric costumed suit. This artwork is an unapologetic reminder that women are beautiful, and strong, and should be celebrated for who they are. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (Issued by the Gallery) About Artist Anjolaoluwa Arike Fatunmbi is an artist based in the southwest city of Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. Her medium of art is expressed in traditional Adire and Ankara fabric with a blend of acrylic on canvas. Her journey into art began at an early stage while watching her father work on various forms of art as a seasoned professional. For, Arike, Art was second nature as she lived and dreamed of art in an environment beaming with top professionals and ardent art enthusiasts. As she advanced in age with a broader exposure to the vicissitudes of life and a deeper understanding of how human nature transcends and reinvents in a constantly changing circle, her works are consciously impacted by her cultural roots and personal experiences. Arike’s textile art is composed of intricate compositions of layers of fabric, flowery patterns, and detailed attention to the markings of the female features. Her pieces are reflective of her personality as she loves to incorporate vibrant colors and whimsical designs. With her early start in the Art scene, Arike has been able to apprentice under renowned masters in the Art sector like the globally acclaimed proponent of Contemporary Black Art, Oluwole Omofemi. Her work was selected for the prestigious Art fellowship themed: Telling textile tales. The program sponsored by the British council had in attendance notable heavyweights like Uzoma Samuel and Laura Jones among other participants. She successfully presented papers on the forms of Art she practice and the ethics guiding her creative enterprise. She has also been greatly inspired by leading female artists in the likes of Marcellina Akpojotor, Bisa Butler...

Desires 3
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The painting titled "Desires 3" is a beautiful work of art that depicts two men sitting across from each other, engaged in what seems to be a deep and meaningful conversation. The painting, created by Esinulo Chiamaka Praise, features an older man and a younger man, each holding a white flower, which adds a sense of purity and serenity to the scene. The older man, who appears to be in his 50s, and the younger man, who looks to be in his 20s, are both dressed in a more casual shirt and pants. Both men are seated on chairs, with their faces turned towards each other in a relaxed yet focused manner. The title of the painting, "Desires 3," adds an element of intrigue and mystery to the scene, as it hints at the possibility of underlying desires and motivations between the two men. However, the painting does not provide any clear answers or indications of what those desires might be, leaving the interpretation up to the viewer. Wisdom is gathered from lessons learned from experiences. Time and age guide a man through life as regards choices or wants... One possible interpretation of the painting is that it represents the passing of knowledge and wisdom from one generation to the next. The older man appears to be sharing something with the younger man, who listens intently and respectfully. The white flowers that both men are holding could be seen as symbols of purity and innocence, representing the purity of the knowledge and wisdom being shared. Another interpretation of the painting is that it represents a deep and meaningful conversation between two people who share a close and intimate relationship. The fact that both men are holding white flowers suggests a sense of purity and love between them, while their relaxed and focused expressions indicate a sense of comfort and ease in each other's presence. In terms of technique, the painting is expertly executed, with rich colors and intricate details that bring the scene to life. Keating's use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and dimensionality, while the placement of the two men in the center of the painting draws the viewer's attention to their faces and the emotions that are portrayed in them. Overall, "Desires 3" is a beautiful and thought-provoking painting that captures the essence of a deep and meaningful conversation between two people. It is a testament to the power of art to evoke emotion and inspire reflection, leaving the viewer with a sense of curiosity and wonder about the motivations and desires of the two men in the painting. Self Love
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Self Love," a poignant creation by Adegbola Deborah, celebrates the essence of self-acceptance and the transformative power of embracing one's true identity. At the heart of this artwork is a young woman, beautifully depicted with a sense of authenticity that transcends societal norms and standards. The title, "Self Love," serves as a guiding principle for the viewers, emphasizing the importance of unconditional self-love. The accompanying message is a powerful reminder that true self-love goes beyond superficial aspects such as physical appearance. It encourages us to look within and understand the depth of our being, recognizing that our worth is not determined by external factors like the shape of our face, the size of our eyes, the length of our hair, or the quality of our clothes. The artwork's portrayal of the young woman becomes a visual narrative of empowerment through a positive mindset. The idea that one's self is a treasure reinforces the concept that within each individual lies a wealth of potential, unique qualities, and inherent value. The emphasis on self-love as the most important love of one's life underscores the significance of cultivating a compassionate and nurturing relationship with oneself. Adegbola Deborah's "Self Love" stands as a profound reminder to viewers to appreciate and embrace their authentic selves. In a world that often imposes unrealistic standards, this artwork serves as an empowering beacon, encouraging individuals to cherish their uniqueness, and fostering a deep connection with the essence of who they are. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (Issued by the Gallery) About Artist Deborah is a very promising budding Nigerian artist who was fortunate to be born into the idyllic serenity of the agrarian town of Saki, surrounded by the immensely inspirational botanical splendor that the community had to offer. These assets combined to nurture the newly discovered talent waiting to be expressed by the young artist who was only fifteen then, having been born in the nineties. Deborah usually derives her creative impulse from nature, everyday experiences, her own sensitive reactions, and her unique interpretation of events and phenomena with a marked inclination towards realism. Hence Deborah's works are at once her own means of catharsis and a vehicle for the showcasing of nature's beauty and by extension human beauty with a particular emphasis on feminine charm. From another perspective, her works represent her own reaction to everyday emerging and re-emerging phenomena hence are inevitably her own self-disclosure. Having been raised within a polygamous home she finds herself equipped with the necessary native intelligence for a mature interpretation of experiences. Deborah is both a gifted artist and a talented scholar. She attended the Polytechnic Ibadan Eruwa campus after which she obtained a degree in fine arts from Olabisi Onabanjo University emerging as the best student at graduation. A prominent part of Deborah's style is the use of flowers or floral background patterns in her works. These serve to reflect her enchantment with nature. Also, traces of impressionism are to be found in her creations. In highlighting feminine assets she chooses to focus on women...

Three Rabbis at The Torah, Expressionist Judaica Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
In this painting the artist uses gestural brushstrokes, which causes distortion and exaggeration for emotional effect. Andre Elbaz uses as his subject three male figures with tefilin are depicted during prayer. André Elbaz (born April 26, 1934, El Jadida, Morocco) is a famous Moroccan painter and filmmaker. Elbaz studied art and theatre in Rabat and Paris from 1950 to 1961. He started painting only at the age of 21, until which age he had been interested mainly in theatre. A few years later, he managed to combine his two passions into a new approach in art-therapy, inventing together with his wife, a psychiatrist, the Pictodrame, which brought him world recognition. His first exhibition, which was very successful, took place in Casablanca in 1961 and earned him an appointment as Professor at the Beaux-Arts school in Casablanca. Years later, in 1976, he exhibited his paintings at the Tel-Aviv Museum. In parallel to his career as a painter, Elbaz is also known as a filmmaker. He produced several short films in France, Canada and the United States. One of them, La nuit n'est jamais complète (The night is never complete), won a prize at the "5th Biennale de Paris in 1967". Among the themes chosen for the many films he produced, there was a short one about the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, as well as a series of drawings entitled Seuls (Alone), with texts written by both Elie Wiesel...

His father realized they had to escape from the Nazi occupiers and tried to get the family across the border into Hungary. However, they were caught near the crossing point, arrested and incarcerated overnight at the nearby railway station. The Czechs put them on a train to Hungary early the next morning. That was their first miracle in their quest for survival. They survived with relative ease until late 1943, when the father was taken away to a forced labor camp. He subsequently died in a death march. Things became even more precarious in early 1944, when the Holocaust made its full-blown presence felt in Hungary. “It wasn’t the Germans, it was the Hungarian Nazis who did the dirty work,” Pressburger points out. The family lived in so-called “safe houses” that were protected by Switzerland, Finland and Sweden. The havens were dismantled in late 1944, and the Pressburgers moved into one of the two Jewish ghettos in Budapest. The Nazis had found two houses with Jews, including the one where we had been, and took them all out and shot them next to the Danube. Today there is a monument by the river [called Shoes on the Danube Bank]. We should have been with the Jews who were killed by the river,” he says. After the war, Pressburger and his siblings were farmed out to various orphanages run by the Jewish Agency, and things took a decidedly better turn. “We finally had food to eat,” he recalls. “After a while we were put on trains that were protected by the Jewish Brigade [of the British Army], and we were sent to Austria, and then to Germany.” “My uncle was a famous artist, and I learned a lot from him,” he says. While in Germany, Pressburger also took some lessons with a local artist. His mother managed to get him and two of his siblings berths on the Exodus, which set sail from Marseilles for Palestine in July 1947. Pressburger was 13 at the time and clearly recalls the aborted attempt to get to the Promised Land. “It was so crowded on the boat. This was a ship that was made to ply rivers in the United States, with a few hundred people on board, and we had over 4,500 passengers crammed in.” As we know, the British prevented the Exodus from docking in Palestine, and the passengers were shipped – in three far more seaworthy vessels – back to France. After the French government refused to cooperate with the British, Pressburger and the others found themselves back in Germany. The teenager eventually made it here in 1948, just one month before the Declaration of Independence. After a short furlough in Tel Aviv, during the first lull in the fighting in the War of Independence, he moved to Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin, where he worked in the cowshed. All the while he continued feverishly drawing and honing his artistic skills, which he says came in handy when he joined the IDF. After completing his military service, which included a spell as one of the founding members of the Flotilla 13 naval commando unit, he worked in Sdom for a while at the Dead Sea Works before starting his formal arts training in earnest. I was in the first group of students at the Avni Institute [in Tel Aviv],” he says. “There was quite a famous bunch of students and teachers like Moshe Mokadi and Isidore Ascheim and Aaron Giladi.” In such illustrious company, one might have thought Pressburger was set to unleash his burgeoning talents on art connoisseurs across the globe, but it was a while before that happened. Pressburger arrived in the French capital in 1964 and spent close to 15 years there, with a short interlude in Germany, before returning to Israel. His time in Paris was a professionally rewarding period of his life, and he also found love. “[Avni Institute teacher] Yochanan Simon gave me the name and address of a French-Israeli family in Paris, but when I got to the house, a young woman opened the door and told me the family was on vacation in Israel,” he explains. Despite missing his expected hosts’ welcome, he and the German-born young lady who greeted him soon fell for each other, and romance quickly led to wedding bells. By all accounts, Pressburger did well in Europe. He secured a rare three-year berth at Cité Internationale des Arts, where artists are normally provided with accommodation and studio space for between two months and a year. He was also accepted to the prestigious Beaux Arts academy of fine arts, mounted solo exhibitions, and took part in group shows all over Europe. One of these last was a group exhibition at Rathaus Charlottenburg in Berlin in 1966 – the first exhibition of Israeli artists in Germany after the Holocaust. When he arrived in Berlin, the lineup for the Israeli show was already signed and sealed, but somehow his work came to the attention of the German culture minister, who arranged for him to join. The Pressburgers’ year-long sojourn came to an abrupt end following an encounter he had one day while walking through the crowded Berlin streets...
