Expressionist Paintings

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

Title: «La Bruja» Collection: Muses Description: Acrylic on canvas, figurative, Vibrant, modern "Who is the witch of the big city today? How does she stand out from everyone else? She wants to break the rules and obeys her inner voice, she is not afraid to be herself, she chooses her own path, she lets magic enter her life every day, because living her life and loving herself is true magic." The artwork in question may celebrate the power and freedom of self-expression. The focus is on a woman who defies convention and chooses to live life on her own terms. She is described as a "witch," which suggests that she is seen as someone who is in touch with the mystical and the spiritual. The artwork may depict this woman as a bold and confident figure, with an unapologetic attitude and a strong sense of personal style. The imagery may be colorful and fantastical, with elements of nature and magic woven into the composition. The artwork may also convey a sense of joy and empowerment, with the message that being true to oneself is the ultimate form of magic. Overall, the artwork celebrates individuality, creativity, and the courage to pursue one's own path in life. Victoria Tsemka...

Evelyne Ballestra's work with signs, symbols and esoteric spirituality reflects her passion for the ancient past and represents a symbolic return to the ground from which we emerged. Cape Maneuver: Expressionist Bullfighter Oil Painting, 1980s
Cape Maneuver: Expressionist Bullfighter Oil Painting, 1980s

Cape Maneuver: Expressionist Bullfighter Oil Painting, 1980s

By Jose Maria Tuser Vazquez

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Title: Cape Maneuver Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez (Barcelona, 1919 – 1986) Technique: Oil on canvas mounted on board Dimensions: 19.7 x 23.6 in (50 x 60 cm) Date: Circa 1980s Signature: Signed "Tuser" in the lower left corner Condition: Excellent; thick, vibrant brushwork and vivid colors well preserved. 📝 Description This painting captures a dramatic moment in the bullfight — the classic verónica — as the matador gracefully halts the bull’s charge with a sweeping motion of the cape. The vivid contrast of magentas, blues, and golds intensifies the theatrical tension between man and beast. The composition is dynamic yet controlled, emphasizing the poise of the torero against the raw force of the bull. The expressive brushstrokes and thick impasto enhance the sense of movement, while the abstracted background ensures focus remains on the central figures. The piece is a striking blend of figuration and emotional energy, characteristic of Tuser’s taurine works. 👤 About the Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez José María Tuser Vázquez was a Spanish painter born in Barcelona in 1919. He studied at the Barcelona School of Arts and Crafts and began exhibiting in the 1940s. By 1947, he had fully devoted his career to bullfighting scenes, developing a distinctive figurative expressionist style with impressionist influences. He collaborated with the magazine El Ruedo, creating numerous illustrations and covers, and designed collectible postcards for Editorial Artigas. His work became well-known in Spanish artistic circles and is now part of both private and institutional collections, including the Club Taurino of London. His paintings have been auctioned internationally, reaching up to $3,000 depending on size and subject. His legacy is that of a painter who masterfully captured the emotion, tradition, and drama of the Spanish corrida. 🎨 Similar Artists José María Tuser Vázquez’s work shares thematic and stylistic elements with: Roberto Domingo – A pioneer of bullfighting art...

Psychological Portrait of Girl with Dog Spanish Figurative Oil Canvas Painting

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Psychological Portrait of Girl with Dog Spanish Figurative Oil Painting 1974 Artist: José Antonio Castro Cadenas Title: Girl with Dog Date: 1974 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 73 × 54 cm (28.7 × 21.3 in) Signature: Signed and dated lower left Frame: Unframed Condition: Very good overall condition. Stable support and paint layer. Description A refined psychological portrait depicting a young girl holding her small companion dog, painted in 1974 by Spanish figurative artist José Antonio Castro Cadenas. The composition is structured around the direct, introspective gaze of the sitter, creating an immediate emotional dialogue with the viewer. The dog’s slightly diverted attention introduces a subtle narrative counterpoint, adding tension and quiet movement within the otherwise serene arrangement. Executed in a restrained palette of muted pinks, greys and softened whites, the painting conveys the lyrical atmosphere characteristic of Spanish figurative portraiture of the 1970s. The artist’s controlled modelling of the face and hands reveals strong academic training combined with a poetic sensitivity typical of mature postwar Spanish realism. Portraits of children accompanied by animals hold a special place within European figurative painting and remain particularly sought after by collectors interested in narrative intimacy and psychological presence. A compelling and elegant example of Spanish figurative painting from the second half of the twentieth century. Biography José Antonio Castro Cadenas (Córdoba, 1926–2006) was a Spanish figurative painter known for the tonal refinement and psychological sensitivity of his portraits and figure compositions. He developed most of his artistic career in Córdoba and exhibited on several occasions at Galería Studio–Juan Bernier, an important venue for the promotion of twentieth-century Andalusian art. His work includes portraits, female figures, hunting scenes, equestrian compositions and landscapes distinguished by solid draftsmanship and harmonious chromatic balance. Today his production forms part of the tradition of Spanish figurative painting that preserved narrative and emotional realism throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The painting resonates with the introspective atmosphere found in the work of Antonio López García, as well as the poetic figurative tradition associated with Julio Romero de Torres and the broader lineage of Spanish psychological portraiture. Its quiet stillness and emotional restraint also echo the intimate portrait sensibility seen in twentieth-century European figurative painters working between realism and lyrical modernity. This positioning situates the work within the continuity of postwar Spanish figurative painting that remained committed to atmosphere, silence and psychological depth rather than abstraction. Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Spanish Female Figure Harvest Landscape Andalusian Oil Painting 1976 Artist: José Antonio Castro Cadenas (Córdoba, Spain, 1926–2006) Title: Woman in Harvest Landscape Date: 1976 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 81 × 65 cm (31.9 × 25.6 in) Signature: Signed and dated lower left Condition: Very good overall condition. Stable support and well preserved paint layer Frame: Unframed DESCRIPTION Expressive Spanish figurative oil painting depicting a seated rural woman holding a woven basket within a Mediterranean harvest landscape, executed in 1976 by Andalusian painter José Antonio Castro Cadenas. The composition combines portrait presence and narrative landscape structure in a balanced and psychologically quiet scene characteristic of poetic Spanish realism of the second half of the 20th century. The female figure occupies the foreground with strong sculptural calm while the background unfolds into a luminous agricultural environment including haystacks, a worker figure and a horse, reinforcing the symbolic connection between human presence and cultivated land. Rather than functioning as a secondary setting, the landscape acts as an emotional extension of the figure, creating a contemplative atmosphere typical of Mediterranean figurative painting traditions. The chromatic harmony is especially refined, combining golden harvest tones, cool mountain blues and warm earth pigments that generate depth, stillness and narrative unity across the composition. Narrative rural figure compositions of this type remain among the most recognizable and collectible themes within 20th century Spanish figurative painting. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY José Antonio Castro Cadenas (Córdoba, 1926–2006) was a Spanish figurative painter known for his portraits, female figures and Mediterranean rural landscapes. He developed most of his artistic career in Córdoba, exhibiting at Galería Studio–Juan Bernier, an important cultural reference within Andalusian figurative painting of the postwar period. His work is characterized by strong drawing structure, tonal sensitivity and a lyrical atmosphere aligned with the tradition of Spanish poetic realism during the second half of the twentieth century. Today his paintings are appreciated for their quiet psychological presence and their continuity with Mediterranean figurative heritage. ARTISTIC CONTEXT / INSPIRATION This painting belongs to the Mediterranean poetic figurative tradition associated with artists such as Julio Romero de Torres in the symbolic integration of female presence and landscape atmosphere. Its structured figure construction and psychological stillness also connect with the figurative realism developed by Antonio López García. The integration of figure and cultivated landscape recalls narrative strategies found in works by Jean‑François Millet and Jules Bastien‑Lepage...
