Expressionist Paintings

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

"Dekadans" Oil Painting 35" x 25.5" inch by Andrey Remnev ARTIST BIO: "My birth place is Yakhroma town, in the vicinity of Moscow. It is situated on high hills, from where broad Bruegelian vistas are open. The uneven terrain with significant differences of high and low; a canal between the Moskva river and the Volga; small rivers, woods and villages; a nearby ancient town of Dmitrov, which is equal to Moscow in age; ships cruising the canal and trains outdistancing them – all this I saw from my window since my early years. It was a view that embraced all the diversity of the world. This is why I can say that the impressions of my childhood and youth – beautiful nature and remarkable people – are the most important ones. In the museum of Moscow's St. Andronic Monastery I copied the best examples of the old Russian painting of the 15th-17th centuries. My own style evolved from the ancient icon...

Notre Dame de Paris II
Located in London, GB
'Notre Dame de Paris II', gouache on paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). One of two paintings of Notre Dame by this artist held by our gallery, it is also an absolutely charming and now, historic depiction from the 1930s, of the most famous cathedral in France. This version uses more exaggerated brushstrokes with strong colours attesting to its expressionist roots. Notre Dame is one of the most widely recognised symbols of the city of Paris and the French nation. As the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, Notre-Dame contains the cathedra of the Archbishop of Paris. Approximately 12 million people visit Notre-Dame annually, making it the most visited monument in the city. While undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019. Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage. The government of France hopes the reconstruction can be completed by Spring 2024, in time for the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Unlike the actual cathedral, this artwork is in good condition, is newly framed and glazed and signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: After the devastation of the First World War, Lucien Génin (1894 - 1953) left his provincial home in the autumn of 1919 to find his fortune among the lively Parisians in the heart of Montmartre. Génin befriended the painters Frank Will, Gen Paul, Émile Boyer, Marcel Leprin...

Serenity
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Serenity is an original painting by Bright Toh. Bright created Serenity Acrylic on a 27.5W by 35.4H inches primed canvas. The artwork "Serenity" is a bright and colorful depiction of a lion head and rose flower, created entirely by a human hand. The combination of these two natural elements results in a stunning and harmonious image that exudes a sense of calm and tranquility. The lion head is the central focus of the artwork, rendered in vibrant hues of orange and yellow that evoke a sense of warmth and vitality. The lion's mane, which surrounds its powerful features, is depicted in a range of shades, from soft pastel pinks and purples to fiery reds and oranges. The overall effect is one of movement and fluidity as if the lion's mane is a living thing in and of itself. Intertwined with the lion's mane is a delicate rose flower, rendered in shades of pink and red that complement the warm tones of the lion's fur. The rose seems to emerge from the lion's mane as if it is a natural extension of the animal's power and beauty. The combination of these two elements creates a powerful visual metaphor, suggesting that beauty and strength can coexist in perfect harmony. Despite the boldness of its colors and imagery, "Serenity" also conveys a sense of calm and tranquility. The lion's expression is serene, and the rose is depicted in a way that suggests a sense of peace and stillness. The artwork invites the viewer to slow down and take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and to find solace in its quiet strength. Overall, "Serenity" is a powerful and evocative work of art that combines elements of nature in a way that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. Its vibrant colors and bold imagery capture the viewer's attention, while its underlying sense of peace and harmony invites reflection and contemplation. It is a testament to the beauty and power of the natural world and a reminder of the importance of finding serenity in our busy and often chaotic lives. Bright Toh artworks portray the exquisite synergy that exists between the evolving African man, wildlife, and their common environment, through the possession of totems as a liaison to his ancestries, which is a core aspect of his identity and cultural heritage. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. While I Wait
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
While I Wait is an original painting by Joseph Christian Ekom-Obong. Joseph created While I Wait with Oil on a 36W by 48H inches primed canvas. The artwork titled "While I Wait" depicts a black young lady who is expectant of love and all the good things that come with it. The artwork is a beautiful representation of hope, patience, and the human desire for companionship and love. The artwork features a young woman standing in the center of the canvas, with her eyes opened and her arms slightly extended as if she is waiting to be embraced by someone. She is dressed in a simple yet elegant dress, which symbolizes her purity and innocence. Her hair is styled in a natural Afro, which adds to the authenticity and realism of the artwork. The artist has used a warm color palette in the background, which creates a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The use of warm colors such as orange and yellow also symbolizes love, passion, and warmth, which are all the emotions that the young lady is waiting to experience. One of the most striking features of the artwork is the expression on the young lady's face. She has a serene and peaceful expression, which indicates that she is content and at peace with herself. However, there is also a hint of anticipation and longing in her eyes, which reveals that she is waiting for someone special to come into her life. The title of the artwork, "While I Wait," adds to the emotional depth of the piece. It suggests that the young lady has been waiting for a long time and that she is willing to wait patiently for as long as it takes to find the love and happiness that she desires. The artwork is a beautiful representation of the human experience of longing and waiting for love. It is a universal theme that is relevant to people of all ages and backgrounds. Joseph Christian Ekom-Obong has captured this theme with great skill and sensitivity, creating an artwork that is both visually stunning and emotionally moving. In conclusion, the artwork titled "While I Wait" is a beautiful and poignant representation of the human experience of waiting for love. The young lady in the artwork is a symbol of hope, patience, and the unending desire for companionship and love. The artwork is a powerful reminder that no matter how long we have to wait, love is always worth waiting for. Tarrasso. small square. House in the countryside. Original acrylic painting
Located in CORAL GABLES - MIAMI, FL
Les Guilleries. Original acrylic painting Casimiro Martínez Tarrassó, a painter known simply as Tarrassó. He was trained at the La Llotja School in Barcelona. He completed his studies in Paris, where he got to know first-hand the Fauvist works that were shaking the Parisian art scene at the time. This Fauve influence will continue to be palpable in his work throughout his life in features such as the strong chromatic contrast, the elevated and somewhat exaggerated perspective, the absolute disinterest in the human figure, which appears only sketched as a complement to the landscape, and the representation of trees as electrified, subjected to tortuous inclinations. It is these formal features that give his works their own vitality and reduce their connection with the referential to a mere pretext. Tarrassó followed in the wake of the great Catalan landscape painters, paying particular attention to Joaquín Mir, although with a clearly differentiated personality due in part to the impact that Fauvism had on his artistic thinking. He cultivated still life and Catalan and Majorcan landscapes. He held his first exhibition in 1928 in Barcelona. Since then his shows have followed in Barcelona, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca and Bilbao. In 1935 he visited Mallorca for the first time, and from 1940 on he will have a studio there, specifically in Palma, where he lived for long periods and developed most of his artistic production. After the Civil War, during the 1940s, Tarrassó took part in several National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, in their editions of 1942, 1943 and 1950. Although the landscape was always the center of his production, Tarrassó also made works such as the mural decoration of the church of Santa María de Badalona. In Mallorca he also carried out a unique undertaking, planting his trestle in the Campanet caves to capture the stalactites and stalagmites from their stone cavities, developing a series of works that he presented in 1948. Throughout his career, Tarrassó was awarded the Pollença Prize of the I International Painting Contest, in 1962; the Santiago Rusiñol...

Big Rio, Original Contemporary Expressionist Landscape Oil Painting on Linen
Located in Boston, MA
Big Rio, Original Contemporary Expressionist Landscape Painting 48" x 48" x 1.75" (HxWxD) Oil on Linen This large square-format work by artist Carol Tippit Woolworth features a stunning color palette of rich greens and reds combined with muted blues, purples, and orange tones. There is a balance, both with the color, but also with the composition as the Rio Grande wraps around the curves in the Southwestern landscape, opening up towards the viewer and simultaneously guiding your eye around to the landscape in the distance. This Mexican desert appears calm and a bit desolate, but also bursting with life and energy through the colors used and the loose, energetic mark making that is characteristic of expressionist landscape works. Artist Commentary: The Rio Grande About the Artist: Art has always been a central part of Carol's life. Constantly drawing as a child, the passion to create something two dimensional has continued to this day, through oil and gouache. Carol currently lives in Santa Fe, NM and exhibits at Smilow Mathiesen Gallery on Canyon Road. She graduated with a BA in Art through the University of California at Santa Barbara, with an emphasis in Painting, but has continued to study at various art institutions (Parsons NYC; Silvermine Artists Guild, CT; Rohaton Art Center, CT; Delaware College of Art & Design (DCAD), DE) throughout her career. She now teaches painting at DCAD (Continuing Education), has several private art students, and leads painting workshops in France twice a year. She also works as a self-employed graphic designer. Carol has always been interested in France, the French landscape and French culture. She loves the fields and hilltop towns, and the strong clean lines and shapes they create. The past couple of years this influence has dominated her work. Her landscapes are a constant search for color, contrast, and shapes. Recently Carol has discovered the natural beauty of Lancaster County PA and Northern New Mexico, and is applying her French vocabulary to these new areas. Another influence early on was of an artist whom she babysat for, and who lived across the street, in Santa Barbara: Priscella Bender Shore. She eventually became her favorite art teacher and mentor at the Santa Barbara Community College. Priscella's work was of women in a swimming pools, reflecting and refracting light. They were both figurative and abstract. This images haunted Carol's memories until she could recently recreate the swimming pool paintings...

Believe conveys that life has an amazing power to heal our system and rejuvenate our spirits. In today's world, where negativity and despair seem to be taking over, Believe is a beacon of hope. Its message is simple yet profound: we are capable of overcoming any obstacle if we believe in ourselves and never give up. The fact that Believe has managed to touch so many lives is a testament to its worth. It is not just a piece of art, but a timeless masterpiece that has the potential to inspire people for generations to come. In describing the painting "Believe", In Eyitayo Alagbe's words: "And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it. Believe in your heart that you're meant to live a life full of passion, purpose, magic, and miracles". Your belief and working towards what you believe in can make so much difference between the life you are living and the life you desire. In conclusion, Believe is a true masterpiece that is both beautiful and meaningful. It's not for mere decoration, it's a source of inspiration for life. Its message is a reminder to us all that we have the strength within...

Untitled, from the Riversong Series

Watercolor on Yupo paper, signed lower right Joffe was serious in a way that many artists today are not: she was an artist engaged with the major questions of her time, attuned to the development of her chosen métier, its intrinsic problems and possibilities. Joffe's career spans the post-World War II Abstract Expressionist movement to the present. She is known for her powerful images of women and horses, often intertwined, and representing reciprocal ideas of power, grace and beauty. Indeed, one NYT critic said that she returned the beauty and grace to the female form that De Kooning had taken away. Embraced by the first generation of Abstract Expressionist painters on the East End of Long Island, she represented a link to central figures in the avant-garde of 20th century American art, including such artists as Willem De Kooning (she was a studio assistant), Philip Pavia, Ibram Lassaw, John Little and Balcomb Greene...

"Strelka. Beginning" Oil Painting 25.5" x 29.5" inch by Andrey Remnev
Located in Culver City, CA
"Strelka. Beginning" Oil Painting 25.5" x 29.5" inch by Andrey Remnev ARTIST BIO: "My birth place is Yakhroma town, in the vicinity of Moscow. Andronic Monastery I copied the best examples of the old Russian painting...

Important "The Victim" Avant Garde 1947 Judaica Expressionist Oil Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Genre: Avant-Garde Subject: Abstract Medium: Oil Surface: Canvas Country: Mexico Dimensions: 25 3/4" x 19 3/4" x 3/4" Dimensions w/Frame: 27" x 21 1/4" THE VICTIM Yonia Fain Oil, 1947 Although this oil painting’s subject is predominantly abstract, there is a faint echo of a figural shape at its center. A figure wearing Tefillin, An organic form appears to be pinned to a hammer shaped object, reminiscent of a crucifix. This tool may be a reference to one of the Soviet Union’s symbols. Moreover, it is likely a direct reference to the persecution Fain faced as a Russian Jew in Bolshevik Russia. The contrast between colors, geometric lines, and organic curves is indicative of Fain’s collaboration with Diego Rivera, as well as the time he spent in Mexico. The primary hues communicate the hardship the artist underwent and his cathartic ability to reproduce those emotions through paint. In addition to being a renowned artist and award-winning poet, Yonia Fain is among the few survivors to triumph over the turmoil of the 20th century. Fain’s abundant body of artwork and poetry pays tribute to the hardship many experienced during the Russian Revolution, Nazi invasion of Poland, and World War II. The persecution Fain experienced forced him to immigrate to several countries including China, Mexico, and the United States. Yonia Fain was born in Russia in 1914. When he was only 10-years-old, he and his family fled from the Bolshevik Revolution to Poland. There he pursued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and hoped to continue his education in Paris. He was awarded B.A. and M.F.A. degrees from the University of Poland. In 1939, the artist and his wife Helen moved to Warsaw when the town they lived in, Vilna, became occupied by the Soviet Union. Although they managed to escape the Nazis, Fain was apprehended by Soviet military...
