Impressionist Paintings

IMPRESSIONIST STYLE

Emerging in 19th-century France, Impressionist art embraced loose brushwork and plein-air painting to respond to the movement of daily life. Although the pioneers of the Impressionist movement — Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir — are now household names, their work was a radical break with an art scene led and shaped by academic traditions for around two centuries. These academies had oversight of a curriculum that emphasized formal drawing, painting and sculpting techniques and historical themes.

The French Impressionists were influenced by a group of artists known as the Barbizon School, who painted what they witnessed in nature. The rejection of pieces by these artists and the later Impressionists from the salons culminated in a watershed 1874 exhibition in Paris that was staged outside of the juried systems. After a work of Monet’s was derided by a critic as an unfinished “impression,” the term was taken as a celebration of their shared interest in capturing fleeting moments as subject matter, whether the shifting weather on rural landscapes or the frenzy of an urban crowd. Rather than the exacting realism of the academic tradition, Impressionist paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings represented how an artist saw a world in motion.

Many Impressionist painters were inspired by the perspectives in imported Japanese prints alongside these shifts in European painting — Édouard Manet drew on ukiyo-e woodblock prints and depicted Japanese design in his Portrait of Émile Zola, for example. American artists such as Mary Cassatt and William Merritt Chase, who studied abroad, were impacted by the work of the French artists, and by the late 19th century American Impressionism had its own distinct aesthetics with painters responding to the rapid modernization of cities through quickly created works that were vivid with color and light.

Girl in restaurant in Paris. 19th century, oil on wood, 46x37,5 cm Eduardo Léon Garrido (1856-1949) Eduardo León Garrido was born in Madrid in 1856. He falls within the Group of Spaniards in Paris, as he warns in his style, with clear influences of Impressionism, somewhat reminiscent of Manet. He was the eldest son of Luis Garrido Fernandez, an official at the Ministry of Finance. His father would have liked him to embrace an administrative career but Eduardo León moved towards the artistic career. Trained in the Escuela Superior de Madrid, he painted his first work « the theft of the Sabine women », at only eighteen years old. Then he entered the Studio of Vicente Palmaroli (1834-1896). He will always consider the latter as his true teacher. In 1875, at the age of 19, he arrived in Paris to continue his studies with a scholarship from the city of Madrid. The same year he exhibited for the first time at the Salon where he presented a « Saint Jerome ». Very quickly he appears to be noticed by the famous merchant of the Rue Chaptal, Adolphe Goupil, for who he worked a few years. Notice that Vincent van Gogh worked for Goupil & Cie from 1869 till 1876 (his brother Theo entered in 1873. From 1876 on Garrido exhibits portraits and stylish, contemporary scenes. Catalogues indicates that he changed his dealer for the gallery Borniche around 1880. During the years 1882-1894 he did not expose anymore at the Salon (except once, in 1887, with the portrait of his friend, the painter Bréauté) . However, he painted a lot to feed the gallery of his dealer and a few galleries in Madrid. During that period he had also some student : Anne Blanche Dillaye (1851-1931), the american painter, studied with him from 1885 till 1887. From 1892 onwards it is the merchant Félix Gérard (one of the first dealers of work by Manet and Courbet), of the Rue Lafitte, which concludes with him an exclusive contract. He probably imposed to the artist to paint a different style. This sealed a radical departure from his 1880-1890 period, during which he painted the streets of Paris, café terraces, newspaper kiosks, and was likened to very fashionable Belle-Époque artists. From 1892 onwards, Garrido painted almost solely gallant scenes in the 18th century style, in keeping with current tastes and clients’ demands. Meanwhile, Garrido left Paris. In 1888 he established a studio on the banks of the Marne at La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire (Val-de-Marne near Paris). He married there in 1892 one of its models, Leonie Beck, and in 1893 their first child, Louis- Edouard, was born. He is quickly integrated into local life and became an art teacher in the Philotechnic Association of La Varenne. From 1895 onwards he presented new works at the Salon des Artistes Français and in 1914, he obtained the French citizenship, while two of his son went into battle (World War I). He continued painting, mainly landscapes, portraits of family members (children, granddaughter Odile born in 1923) and flowers. At the end of his life and because of poor eyesight he painted exclusively flower bouquets. In 1939, Eduardo León and his wife Leonie arrive at Caen. They settled with their son, Louis- Edouard, who resided there. Eduardo Leon Garrido died there in 1949. He is buried in the family burial at the cemetery Venoix in Caen. Some of his paintings can be seen in the Museo del Prado (Madrid), the Museo Carmen Thyssen (Málaga), the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Argentina), Bilbao Fine Arts Museum and private collections such as the Bellver Collection in Sevilla. In the Musée Charles Léandre...

Mid-Century Catalan Farmhouse Oil Painting Mediterranean Rustic Landscape

By Joan Asensio Marine

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Artist: Joaquín Asensio Mariné (Barcelona, 1890 – 1961) Title: Catalan Farmhouse with Garden and Bare Trees Medium: Oil on panel Dimensions (unframed): 38 × 46 cm (14.96 × 18.11 in) Dimensions (framed): 52 × 60 cm (20.47 × 23.62 in) Signature: Signed lower left Period: Mid-20th Century Condition: Very good condition. Stable pictorial layer with well-preserved original impasto and no visible losses. Frame condition: Period gilt wooden frame with minor wear consistent with age. Presented: Sold with its current frame. Original oil painting by Catalan artist Joaquín Asensio Mariné, depicting a traditional Catalan farmhouse surrounded by a vegetable garden and winter trees. The composition is built with energetic, textured brushwork and visible impasto, giving the surface strong material presence and movement. The artist employs a rich Mediterranean palette of ochres, greens and blue-grey tones, capturing the rustic architecture and intimate atmosphere of rural Catalonia. Asensio Mariné constructs the scene with expressive confidence, balancing structural solidity in the buildings with freer gestural treatment in the vegetation and sky. The thick paint application enhances the tactile quality of the work, making it visually dynamic and highly decorative. Mid-century Catalan rural landscapes remain particularly appreciated by collectors for their authenticity, regional character and timeless Mediterranean appeal. An attractive and characterful example of 20th-century Spanish landscape painting. Joaquín Asensio Mariné (Barcelona, 1890 – 1961) was a Catalan painter known for his Mediterranean landscapes, rural architecture and traditional countryside scenes. Active in Barcelona during the first half of the 20th century, he exhibited in galleries such as Sala Rovira and Galería Jaimes. His work sits between traditional realism and a restrained impressionist language, characterized by textured brushwork and a luminous Mediterranean palette. His rural compositions share affinities with the broader tradition of Spanish landscape painting associated with artists such as Joaquín Sorolla, Eliseu Meifrèn and the Catalan post-impressionist school, while maintaining a distinctly regional character. Today his works are appreciated by collectors of mid-century Spanish and Mediterranean painting for their authenticity, decorative strength and connection to Catalan artistic heritage. Indians in a Canoe on Lake Tahoe with Snow Covered Mountains - 19th Century Oil

By William Weaver Armstrong

Located in Soquel, CA

Indians in a Canoe on Lake Tahoe with Snow Covered Mountains - 19th Century Oil Impressionistic rendering of Lake Tahoe by American landscape painter William Weaver Armstrong (b. 1862 d. 1906.) In the foreground, a lone Indian holding a rifle stands looking out over Lake Tahoe on a path surrounded by evergreens and other alpine brush; in the distance are Indians with Eagle feather head dresses (painted in red for effect) in a canoe traversing the Lake. The foliage and figure are rendered with visible and expressive brushstrokes, with vibrant orange and yellow highlights on the figure. Behind this piece of land is Lake Tahoe and the snow covered Sierra mountains in the distance. On the lake there is a canoe with four people sitting in it, their reflections visible on the water. The lake and mountains in the distance are rendered in a smoother style than the foreground, with more blended brushstrokes and colors. The sky is clear and painted a pale blue color with strong cyan tones. The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California are the original, aboriginal people of the Lake Tahoe Basin, known as dáɁaw (the lake) to them, a land they've inhabited for millennia, expertly managing resources and using controlled burns for healthy forests before European settlement. They are organized into bands, including the Welmélti, páwalu, and huŋalélti, and their deep spiritual and cultural connection to the lake. Signed "W. W. Armstrong" in bottom right corner. Titled "Lake Taho Cal" by the artist on stretcher bars. Canvas size: 30" H x 50" W William Weaver Armstrong was born in Ontario, New York in 1862, during the first year of the American Civil War. His father was also a painter and taught him as a child. When Armstrong was 12 years old, his family moved west and eventually settled in Oakland, California. He was raised in Oakland and eventually became a painter based out of the city, being listed so by the Oakland City Directory in 1887. He made frequent trips around California, painting the landscape from Santa Cruz to the Northern border with Oregon. He also owned a carriage painting...
