Modern Paintings
MODERN STYLE
The first decades of the 20th century were a period of artistic upheaval, with modern art movements including Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dadaism questioning centuries of traditional views of what art should be. Using abstraction, experimental forms and interdisciplinary techniques, painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers and performance artists all pushed the boundaries of creative expression.
Major exhibitions, like the 1913 Armory Show in New York City — also known as the “International Exhibition of Modern Art,” in which works like the radically angular Nude Descending a Staircase by Marcel Duchamp caused a sensation — challenged the perspective of viewers and critics and heralded the arrival of modern art in the United States. But the movement’s revolutionary spirit took shape in the 19th century.
The Industrial Revolution, which ushered in new technology and cultural conditions across the world, transformed art from something mostly commissioned by the wealthy or the church to work that responded to personal experiences. The Impressionist style emerged in 1860s France with artists like Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas quickly painting works that captured moments of light and urban life. Around the same time in England, the Pre-Raphaelites, like Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, borrowed from late medieval and early Renaissance art to imbue their art with symbolism and modern ideas of beauty.
Emerging from this disruption of the artistic status quo, modern art went further in rejecting conventions and embracing innovation. The bold legacy of leading modern artists Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and many others continues to inform visual culture today.

About this artists: John Atherton (1900-1952) did not show an early aptitude for art; rather, his first love was nature and the activities he relished there, mainly fishing and hunting. Born in Brainerd, Minnesota in 1900, he learned to fish with his father from the age of four. Later the family moved to Spokane, Washington, and when he was old enough, Atherton worked at a variety of jobs to help support his family. One such job, in the sorting plant of a lead and silver mine, paid $4.25 a day—a good wage, though he never had time to spend his money, since he worked seven days a week.
After serving in the Navy for a year during World War I, Atherton was determined to get an education. He worked as a sign painter and played the banjo in a dance band, finally accumulating enough money to enroll in the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Once there, he worked like a fiend, attending classes both during the day and at night, getting the best training available.
Though he had always intended to be a fine artist, Atherton’s first jobs were for commercial art firms. In 1929, using the prize money won for a painting he entered in an art competition, Atherton and his wife moved to New York City. Though the economic situation was difficult in those years, he managed to keep going by taking commissions for magazine illustrations, and over the years he would paint more than forty covers for The Saturday Evening Post.
In 1938, an artist friend suggested that he use the same flat, decorative style as his commercial work for his gallery paintings. This was a breakthrough for Atherton; soon afterwards he held a one-man show at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York, and his paintings began to be collected by museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Atherton’s reputation increased to a national scale when he designed the art deco stone lithograph poster for the 1939 World’s Fair that strikingly depicted Earth and its atmospheric layers in the lap of Liberty.

Nora Summers was a British painter, printmaker and photographer who grew up in an engineering family. She studied at Bristol School of Art before progressing on to the Slade School in London where she developed under the teaching of Henry Tonks from 1907-1910. Her work was often characterised by its serene, still quality, here her landscape captures a forest scene as a poignant documentation of the moment- a fleeting memory, frozen in time. ALBERT GOLDMAN Born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1922, Albert Goldman started drawing and painting at the age of 8. He began his art education 1936 Art with Italian and Greek artists at the "Atelier", in Alexandria, Egypt; continuing 1956 with Avraham Yaskiel and Zvi Mairovich, Haifa and with Moshe Propes, in Tel Aviv. In 1940 he obtained a diploma of commerce and opted for a career in the hospitality industry, following in the footsteps of his parents who operated the Majestic Palace Hotel in Alexandria. He moved to Cairo in 1942 to study Swiss Hotel Management at Egyptian Hotels Limited, the largest hotel company in the Middle East at the time. In 1946 he decorated an evening gown for an American singer, Catherine Essex, who sang before King Farouk. By 1947 he was the manager of the Luxor Hotel. In 1948, during an air raid over Alexandria, he was attacked by an Arab mob accusing him of signaling Israeli planes. He miraculously survived 12 stab wounds to the back. In March 1950 he married Lucette Blumenthal. He was put on the blacklist by the Ministry of Interior in Egypt, and in 1951 he managed to leave Egypt and came to Israel in September 1951 aboard the ship Artza. In 1956 he attended a drawing and painting course with Meirovich and Avraham Yaskiel in Haifa. He organized the Jerusalem Art Cellar in 1958 and settled in Jerusalem. He paints mostly Israeli landscapes, particularly of Jerusalem. This is done in a style reminiscent of Tully Filmus and Itzhak Holtz. Albert Goldman was born in 1922 in Egypt

Three Chimneys is a prime example of Ethel Margolies’ Precisionist-influenced industrial scenes. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Margolies made a name for herself by painting the Northeast’s factories, foundries, and manufacturing plants. Although this subject matter is often associated with male artists, Margolies is part of an important lineage of female modernists who depicted symbols of America’s industrial might. Starting with artists like New Jersey’s Elsie Driggs and Chicago’s Yvonne Deluc Pryor, Margolies is part of a through line of women Precisionist painters that also included the West Coast’s Vanessa Helder. Whereas these artists tended towards a stark and pristine realism, Margolies seems to have been influenced by the 1920s and early 1930s work of Charles Demuth’s and Charles Sheeler’s highly designed paintings from the same period, as both adopted a cubo-futurist oriented brand of Precisionism.

Pair of French mid 20th Century drawing in the style of Georges Remi, dit Hergé. The works are not signed but both are titled and dated. Presented in modern frames under glass.
The first is a charming street view of Cannes on the Cote D'Azur in the south of France, an area now internationally famous for its annual film festival. The artist has captured the imposing nature of the fine stone buildings with their blue and green shutters towering over the scene. Next to it fine trees so characteristic of French streets are just coming in to leaf. Two men go about their business, one is walking towards a cafe. Cars and a red delivery truck animate the scene.
The second an equally charming view of the chapel at the Nice Chateau cemetery on the Cote D'Azur in the south of France. The artist has captured the imposing nature of the fine colourful stone buildings with their arches, cupolas and finials. Surrounding the buildings are trees and bushes and to the foreground cars of typical 1960s design. The style of the artist is clearly inspired by the animations of Georges Remi, dit Hergé which were so popular at this period.
