MODERN STYLE

The first decades of the 20th century were a period of artistic upheaval, with modern art movements including Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dadaism questioning centuries of traditional views of what art should be. Using abstraction, experimental forms and interdisciplinary techniques, painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers and performance artists all pushed the boundaries of creative expression.

Major exhibitions, like the 1913 Armory Show in New York City — also known as the “International Exhibition of Modern Art,” in which works like the radically angular Nude Descending a Staircase by Marcel Duchamp caused a sensation — challenged the perspective of viewers and critics and heralded the arrival of modern art in the United States. But the movement’s revolutionary spirit took shape in the 19th century.

The Industrial Revolution, which ushered in new technology and cultural conditions across the world, transformed art from something mostly commissioned by the wealthy or the church to work that responded to personal experiences. The Impressionist style emerged in 1860s France with artists like Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas quickly painting works that captured moments of light and urban life. Around the same time in England, the Pre-Raphaelites, like Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, borrowed from late medieval and early Renaissance art to imbue their art with symbolism and modern ideas of beauty.

Emerging from this disruption of the artistic status quo, modern art went further in rejecting conventions and embracing innovation. The bold legacy of leading modern artists Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and many others continues to inform visual culture today.

Vintage Spanish Fruit Still Life Oil Painting Large Kitchen Wall Art Mediterranean Tabletop Interior Decor Canvas Painting Artist: Antonio Tarraso (Spanish, born 1946) Title: Bodegón de frutas Date: circa 1990 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions (image): Height: 65 cm (25.6 in); Width: 81 cm (31.89 in) Dimensions (framed): Height: 77 cm (30.31 in); Width: 93 cm (36.61 in) Signature: Signed lower right Condition: Good overall condition with minor age-related surface marks visible Frame: Frame included Origin: Spain Style: Traditional Mediterranean still life painting Period: 1990–1999 Subject: Fruit still life composition with melon grapes apples ceramic bowl Elegant Mediterranean still life composition featuring grapes, melon and apples arranged around a traditional ceramic bowl and tableware elements. The painting combines classical studio arrangement with warm tonal harmony typical of late 20th century Spanish still life painting, creating a strong decorative presence suitable for dining room, kitchen or hospitality interiors. Its large horizontal format and original frame make the piece immediately display-ready and particularly effective as a focal wall artwork. Traditional fruit still life paintings remain among the most versatile interior artworks for collectors seeking warm European atmosphere pieces. This composition follows the long European still life tradition shaped by Spanish masters such as Luis Meléndez and later Mediterranean studio painters working with structured tabletop arrangements and luminous fruit surfaces. The balanced grouping of ceramics and fruit echoes the decorative realism widely developed in Spanish studio painting during the late 20th century. Antonio Tarraso is a Spanish painter known for traditional Mediterranean still life compositions and decorative interior-oriented oil paintings. His work reflects the continuity of the classical fruit still life genre within modern Spanish studio painting. fruit still life painting kitchen wall art painting dining room wall art painting large still life painting spanish still life painting mediterranean still life painting vintage fruit painting...

Simó Busom, Catalan Mediterranean Landscape with River, Signed Mid-Century oil

By Simó Busom Grau

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

This mid-century oil on canvas by Catalan painter Simó Busom i Grau presents a vibrant Mediterranean landscape with river and house, painted in an expressive postwar Spanish style associated with the Barcelona school. Artist: Simó Busom i Grau (Barcelona, 1927–2020) Title: Mediterranean Landscape with River and House Date: Mid-20th Century (circa 1950s–1960s) Medium: Oil on canvas Canvas size: 46 x 55 cm (18.1 x 21.6 in) Framed size: 59 x 68 cm (23.2 x 26.8 in) Signature: Signed lower right Condition: Good overall condition. Stable paint layer. Frame: Decorative frame included, ready to hang Location: Sitges, Spain Style: Spanish Postwar Landscape / Mediterranean Modern A refined example of postwar Catalan landscape painting, this original oil by Simó Busom i Grau captures the Mediterranean atmosphere through confident brushwork and luminous color transitions. The composition centers around a warm yellow house set against rolling terrain and flowing water. Gestural trees structure the foreground, creating depth and movement while framing the landscape. The artist’s handling of paint is energetic yet controlled, with visible impasto and layered color planes that enhance texture and spatial presence. The palette moves between cool river blues and sunlit earth tones, reflecting the light and tonal vibration characteristic of mid-20th century Spanish painting. The result is a work that balances decorative appeal with painterly authenticity. Compact in size yet visually dynamic, it functions beautifully in residential interiors or curated collections of European mid-century art. The painting is signed and offered with decorative frame, ready to hang. Simó Busom i Grau (Barcelona, 1927–2020) was a Catalan painter trained at the Acadèmia Baixas in Barcelona. He developed a career closely linked to the city’s artistic circuit, exhibiting regularly in Barcelona and Madrid and maintaining connections with the historic Sala Parés. His work focused primarily on Mediterranean and urban landscapes, characterized by expressive brushwork, structural clarity and a luminous color palette rooted in modern Catalan tradition. Elegant Female Skier Portrait Alpine Scene circa 1930s European School Barcelona

By Roger Broders

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Elegant Female Skier Portrait Alpine Scene circa 1930s Barcelona School Artist: Signed J. Barraguer School: Barcelona School Period: circa 1935–1945 Medium: Oil on canvas Signature: Signed lower right Support stamp: Casa Teixidor, Barcelona (verso) Dimensions: 61 × 50 cm (24 × 19.7 in) Frame: Unframed Condition: Good vintage condition consistent with age. Stable paint surface and fresh original colors. No visible restorations under normal inspection. DESCRIPTION Elegant alpine portrait of a female skier painted in Barcelona during the golden age of European winter tourism imagery, likely between the mid-1930s and early 1940s. The composition captures a refined winter sports aesthetic typical of pre-war Alpine visual culture, where skiing symbolized modernity, elegance and leisure rather than competition. The seated figure, dressed in a vivid blue jacket and striking red scarf, appears poised against a dramatic snowy mountain backdrop rendered with confident, atmospheric brushwork. The artist combines portrait sensitivity with poster-like clarity, creating an image that resonates strongly with the visual language of classic Swiss and French ski resort advertising from the same period. The palette is particularly effective: cool tonal snow fields contrast with warm facial modelling and bold accents of red, producing a balanced decorative presence ideal for interiors. The reverse bears a supplier stamp from Casa Teixidor, Barcelona, a well-known early twentieth-century artists’ material provider, supporting the proposed dating of the work. Today the painting reads both as a refined portrait and as an evocative example of early Alpine leisure imagery, making it especially suitable for mountain interiors, ski lodges, modernist homes or collectors interested in European travel culture of the interwar period. ARTIST BIO J. Barraguer was active in Barcelona during the first half of the twentieth century and worked within a pictorial language that bridges easel painting and illustration associated with the emergence of modern leisure culture in Europe. Artists of this generation frequently contributed to portraiture, decorative painting and tourism-related imagery that reflected the growing popularity of winter sports and Alpine travel between the 1920s and 1940s. Works such as this example demonstrate a confident handling of figure painting combined with a strong awareness of contemporary graphic aesthetics typical of the period. Paintings by Barcelona-based artists working in this hybrid decorative-figurative tradition are increasingly appreciated today for their ability to connect portraiture, design and early travel imagery within a single composition. Comparable in atmosphere to the refined Alpine winter imagery developed in Europe during the interwar period by artists associated with the golden age of ski resort poster design and leisure culture painting. The elegant treatment of the female skier and the stylized mountain backdrop resonate with the visual language found in works by artists such as Emil Cardinaux, Alex Walter Diggelmann, and Roger Broders, whose compositions helped define the iconic imagery of Alpine tourism between the 1920s and 1940s. The painting also shares affinities with the modern figurative approach to leisure subjects seen in Jean Gabriel Domergue, particularly in the refined depiction of fashionable female figures associated with elegance and travel culture of the period. Within the Iberian context, the work relates to the broader tradition of Catalan artists working between easel painting and decorative illustration during the early twentieth century, when winter sports imagery became part of the emerging visual identity of modern European tourism. female skier painting alpine skier portrait vintage ski painting...
