19th century Antique English Victorian Summer Harvest landscape, with figures.

By John Mundell

Located in Woodbury, CT

19th century English Antique Victorian Summertime Harvest landscape, with figures. John Mundell was a British painter of landscapes as well as river scenes and coastal views. It is suggested that Mundell was a pseudonym of John James Wilson. Mundell’s work was vigorous, bright, and attractive and compares favorably with the work of many of the better artists of his time. This is a very fine example of the artist's work. It is a rare composition for the artist as he mostly painted marines. This piece is framed in its original antique gold leaf frame

Rural Scene Oil Painting, 19th Century Academic Style, Signed 1878

Located in Genève, GE

An elegant and evocative example of 19th-century figurative painting, combining narrative charm with timeless decorative sophistication. Monogrammed lower right and dated 1878. A charming and finely executed 19th-century European genre painting, oil on canvas, monogrammed L.A. and dated 1878. The composition depicts a tender rural scene: a young peasant woman pouring a drink for a seated farm worker resting beside a rocky outcrop, his scythe laid across his lap. In the background, a pastoral landscape unfolds with grazing livestock, distant figures, and tall trees, evoking the quiet rhythms of agrarian life. Rendered with academic precision and warm naturalistic color, the painting captures both the dignity of rural labor and the intimacy of everyday moments. The artist demonstrates particular skill in the modeling of the figures, the textures of clothing, and the atmospheric depth of the landscape. Soft light bathes the scene, enhancing the harmonious palette of earth tones, greens, and warm reds. Works of this type were highly prized in late 19th-century Europe, reflecting the period’s fascination with pastoral virtue and traditional country life. The painting offers both historical character and strong decorative appeal, making it suitable for collectors of antique European art as well as refined interior settings. 19th century genre painting, antique oil painting 1878, European peasant painting, rural genre scene painting, antique figurative oil painting, pastoral scene antique, farm worker painting, peasant couple painting, academic oil painting 19th century, Continental school painting...

A Hazy Morning on the Welsh Hills
A Hazy Morning on the Welsh Hills

A Hazy Morning on the Welsh Hills

By Benjamin Williams Leader

Located in Wiscasett, ME

Oil on artist panel, signed and dated lower left. It measures 19.75" x 22.75" including the frame, which is likely the original. Benjamin Williams Leader RA (12 March 1831 – 22 March 1923) was an English landscape painter. The inspiration for these early works was the countryside around Worcester itself, "the cottages, farmhouses, lanes, hedgerows and churches, so exceedingly picturesque and beautiful". However, Leader did not finish his course of studies at the R. A, nor did he need to – his paintings proved to be in great demand by wealthy buyers and he achieved an enviable degree of commercial success within only a few years of his first sale. In 1857 he changed his name to Benjamin Williams Leader to distinguish himself from the many other painters with the surname Williams. In autumn of that year he travelled to Scotland, and painted A Quiet pool in Glen Falloch...

Vintage Photo-Portrait Hand Signed by Giuseppe Garibaldi - 1870s
Vintage Photo-Portrait Hand Signed by Giuseppe Garibaldi - 1870s

Vintage Photo-Portrait Hand Signed by Giuseppe Garibaldi - 1870s

Located in Roma, IT

Signed Portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi is an albumen print realized by Lugi Montabone, Florence 1870 circa. The portrait is signed with a dedication handwritten by Garibaldi on the lower edge of the cardboard. Excellent conditions. Cardboard cm 11 x 16, print cm 10 x 14 This unique document of Italian history reproduces a famous photographic portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi, taken by Luigi Brogi at the end of his life. In the portrait the famous hero wears a poncho and a beret, the face looks very tired but retains a fierce expression on the face. The pose of this photograph, exactly like the clothing, suggests that this photo is a tribute to another portrait made by Brogi but in 1866, in which Garibaldi poses in the height of his celebrity, dressed in the same South American tradition clothing. The incredibly characteristic element of this exceptional document concerns the autograph: the handwriting part is certainly written by Garibaldi's hand but with discontinuous and angular signs, an evident than tender sign of the senility of the "hero of the two worlds". Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi (4 July 1807 – 2 June 1882) was an Italian general, patriot, and republican. He contributed to the Italian unification...

“Flowers in Classical Urn”

By Edward Chalmers Leavitt

Located in Southampton, NY

Very fine example of the artistry of the master still life painter of his day, Edward Chalmers Leavitt. Signed lower left and dated 1875. Condition is very good. Provenance: Christie’s Auction, New York, December 2, 1992, lot 228. Overall in period replica gold leaf deep cove gallery frame 25.75 by 17.75 inches. Edward C. Leavitt (1842-1904) worked in Providence but is also associated with the Fall River School of still life painting through the influence of, and affinity of his style to, the work of Robert S. Dunning. Leavitt was a student of landscape painter James Morgan Lewin, a founder of Providence’s artistic “group of 1855.” Leavitt’s work is known for its realism, rich coloration, sharp focus and careful finish. His paintings of fruit and flowers incorporate ornate decorative pieces such as silver or bronze ewers, salvers, tankards, or plates on carved and polished tables. Leavitt was a prolific artist, exhibiting frequently at the National Academy of Design, the Boston Art Club, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His work inspired other still life painters in Providence, resulting in that city’s own still life tradition, including artists such as John Clinton Spencer, Bryant Chapin...
