'August the Strong' had a distinct passion for collecting and was not only a patron and lover of the arts, but also an enthusiastic patron of science. His natural history cabinet was regarded as the most important collection of its kind in Europe and contained a large number of exotic animals. He financed expeditions, from which the researchers were to bring the 'most possible species of their animals alive or in skins and skeletons or even crushed' back to Dresden. Theaster Gates' practice includes sculpture, installation, performance and urban interventions that aim to bridge the gap between art and life. Gates works as an artist, curator, urbanist and facilitator and his projects attempt to instigate the creation of cultural communities by acting as catalysts for social engagement that leads to political and spatial change.
Gates has described his working method as “critique through collaboration” – often with architects, researchers and performers – to create works that stretch the idea of what we usually understand visual-based practices to be. For his exhibition at Milwaukee Art Museum exhibition in 2010, for example, Gates invited a 250 strong gospel choir into the galleries to sing songs adapted from the inscriptions on pots by the famous 19th century slave and potter 'Dave Drake'. For the 2010 Whitney Biennial, Gates transformed the Whitney’s Sculpture Court with a spare, architectural installation that functioned as a communal gathering space for performances, social engagement, and contemplation. For the duration of the exhibition Gates collaborated with various creative practitioners on a series of 'monastic residencies', holding live events such as the session by Gates' musical ensemble, the Black Monks of Mississippi. In another recent exhibition at Seattle Art Museum, Gates transformed the gallery into an audio archive entitled 'The Listening Room', incorporating a hand-built DJ...

She is particularly interested in expressing inner thoughts and feelings and how those relate to reality. Sascha Mallon’s work encourages viewers to slow down and to notice the beauty and wonder of the world around us.
“Mountains are a recurring theme in my work. They are a metaphor for the body and also allude to my Austrian heritage. They refer to the border between inside and outside and represent stability and home. My mountain sculptures are formed out of broken pieces of glass and ceramics. This work started when I broke one of my favorite cups. The mountain represents the idea that when we face difficulties and challenges in life there are two possibilities: either we accept it and learn something, get stronger, and grow, or part of ourselves breaks and we carry the weight of the loss with us. The mountain is also a metaphor for the fact that many different pieces forming a whole are stronger than the individual parts.” -Sascha Mallon

Montserrat is totally convinced that ceramics is the most noble, traditional and humanly attached material of all. Also, historically, what this material has allowed us, the humanity, to achieve, in all aspects, from improving our health to a medium of expression, is immense. This makes him feel real veneration and respect to it. He shows a very particular interest for the highly technically demanding oriental glazes from the Old Masters, having inspired him to make an extensive research, giving the strong finish to Montserrat’s work. Glazes are his passion. He is fascinated to see and endlessly test what the chemical elements around us bring to the surface of the vessels that he throws on the wheel.
