These include paintings, pottery, basket ware, wood carvings, and sculpture done in metal as well as the stone carvings. While there is not a long standing tradition of sculpture in what is now Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia), stone carvings dating from the 15th century were seen in Great Zimbabwe, an excavated temple near Bulawayo. Most of the artifacts from this location have been moved to museums in Cape Town, South Africa or London. It is generally agreed that Zimbabwean stone sculpture as seen today began during the late colonial period of the 1950's and 1960's. Randolph John Rogers (American, 1825 - 1892) Randolph Rogers' Nydia, the Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii debuted in 1856 to critical and public acclaim, solidifying Rogers’ position as a pre-eminent American sculptor and it remains one of the artist’s most celebrated works today. The subject of Nydia is drawn from Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Last Days of Pompeii 1834. After touring the ruins of the ancient city in 1833, and inspired by the stories of blinding volcanic ash, he composed the tale of Nydia, a slave who led her master, Glaucus, to safety. Rogers depicts Nydia at the moment that she and Glaucus have become separated in their perilous journey through the rubble and Nydia seeks familiarity in the surrounding chaos, her distress evident in her pained expression. The grace of the sculpture is at odds with the turmoil portrayed; a toppled Corinthian capital lies at her feet and obstructs her next step, indicated by the tilt of her back foot and grip on her walking stick. Examples of this model can be found in major American collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Born in Pasadena and raised in Orange County, Elizabeth Turk earned her M.F.A. at the Rinehart School of Sculpture, Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Circle of Henri-Gaudier-Breska 1891-1915 Reclining Figure Carved marble Height 5 inches Born Henri Alphonse Séraphin Marie Gaudier near Orléans in France, Gaudier-Brzeska started using his hyphenated name in 1910 when he met the Polish writer Sophie Brzeska. They moved to London together in January 1911 and adopted their new names and the identity of brother and sister in order to make their cohabitation respectable. Gaudier-Brzeska started to establish himself as a sculptor in 1912. Initially influenced heavily by Rodin, he later assimilated more influences from the modernist movement of cubism and from examples of non-European art he saw in London’s museums. He met the sculptor Jacob Epstein in June 1912, who further encouraged him to break with classical Greek tradition. While working from 25 Winthorpe Road in 1913–14, Gaudier-Brzeska became increasingly involved in London’s avant-garde art scene. He exhibited at the London Salon in July 1913, where he met the poet and arts patron Ezra Pound. Pound described Brzeska as ‘like a well-made young wolf or some soft-moving, bright-eyed wild thing’. The present sculpture is as rare as it is delightful. Mademoiselle Claude-Levy, as the catalogues of the period list her, was one of the truly original talents of the Art Deco period. Painter, architect, decorator, and sculptor, she was a friend of the Parisian, Modernist sculptors, Chana Orloff, Henri Laurens and the Martel brothers, to whom her work was often compared. The ingenuity of her models brought her great critical acclaim, but she seems to have stopped producing in the early 1930s. Her output, although fine, is rare. Claude-Levy’s gentle Cubism might be better described as Purism in sculpture. It is characterized by simplified surfaces, rounded (as opposed to angular) forms, and smooth, lustrous surfaces. The Purist movement included the painters Léger, Ozenfant and Le Corbusier in its ranks. Like rippling sound waves, ridges cover half the figures face and body, each undulating and glistening with a polished surface.
