Impressionist Art

IMPRESSIONIST STYLE

Emerging in 19th-century France, Impressionist art embraced loose brushwork and plein-air painting to respond to the movement of daily life. Although the pioneers of the Impressionist movement — Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir — are now household names, their work was a radical break with an art scene led and shaped by academic traditions for around two centuries. These academies had oversight of a curriculum that emphasized formal drawing, painting and sculpting techniques and historical themes.

The French Impressionists were influenced by a group of artists known as the Barbizon School, who painted what they witnessed in nature. The rejection of pieces by these artists and the later Impressionists from the salons culminated in a watershed 1874 exhibition in Paris that was staged outside of the juried systems. After a work of Monet’s was derided by a critic as an unfinished “impression,” the term was taken as a celebration of their shared interest in capturing fleeting moments as subject matter, whether the shifting weather on rural landscapes or the frenzy of an urban crowd. Rather than the exacting realism of the academic tradition, Impressionist paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings represented how an artist saw a world in motion.

Many Impressionist painters were inspired by the perspectives in imported Japanese prints alongside these shifts in European painting — Édouard Manet drew on ukiyo-e woodblock prints and depicted Japanese design in his Portrait of Émile Zola, for example. American artists such as Mary Cassatt and William Merritt Chase, who studied abroad, were impacted by the work of the French artists, and by the late 19th century American Impressionism had its own distinct aesthetics with painters responding to the rapid modernization of cities through quickly created works that were vivid with color and light.

Cadaques Harbor Church Catalonia Mediterranean Fishing Boat Oil Painting Spanish

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Cadaques Harbor Church Catalonia Mediterranean Fishing Boat Oil Painting Spanish Coastal Scene Artist: Juan Pardo Forteza Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 33 × 41 cm (13 × 16.1 in) Signature: Signed lower right Frame: Unframed Condition: Very good condition. Stable paint surface with visible original brushwork Origin: Spain Period: Mid-20th century Atmospheric Mediterranean harbor scene depicting the coastal village of Cadaqués with the Church of Santa Maria rising above the historic waterfront. A traditional Catalan fishing boat placed in the foreground structures the composition and anchors the viewer within the shoreline space, while the stepped white architecture of the old town creates one of the most recognizable silhouettes of the Costa Brava. Executed with loose impressionist brushwork and a restrained palette of greys, warm ochres and soft pink tonal transitions, the painting captures the distinctive northern Mediterranean light associated with Catalan coastal painting of the twentieth century. Views of Cadaqués remain among the most desirable subjects within Spanish coastal landscape painting due to their strong connection with the artistic history of the region and their immediate architectural identity. Particularly suitable for collectors of Mediterranean harbor painting and Spanish modern decorative landscapes. The painting belongs to the Catalan coastal landscape tradition associated with artists such as Joaquim Mir and Eliseu Meifrèn. Its subject matter also connects directly with the artistic environment of Salvador Dalí, whose long association with Cadaqués helped establish the village as one of the most iconic painterly locations of the Mediterranean. Juan Pardo Forteza was a Spanish painter active during the second half of the twentieth century, known for Mediterranean coastal landscapes and harbor scenes of Catalonia and the Balearic environment. His work focuses primarily on traditional fishing boats, historic waterfront architecture and luminous shoreline compositions executed with impressionist brushwork and strong atmospheric sensitivity. Paintings depicting recognizable Mediterranean villages such as Cadaqués represent one of the most characteristic themes of his production and remain especially appreciated in decorative and collector-oriented markets. "Venetian Scene with Gondola" Colorful 20th Century Impressionist Oil Painting

By Johannes Schiefer

Located in New York, NY

A charming Venetian scene with gondola oil on canvas painting by the French artist, Johanne Schiefer. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. Here you see figures walking with gondolas and an abundance of color and life. The magic is being felt with all the magnificent details, as Schiefer captures the architecture of Venice so beautifully; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a gold tone carved wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 12 x 16 inches Frame measures 16.5 x 20.5 inches Johannes Schiefer was born in 1896 in the Netherlands, and quickly gained notoriety for his landscapes, still life’s and portraits. Schiefer won the Prix de Rome at the age of 19 and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany, and then moved to Paris where he continued his studies in art at the Beaux Arts, and later at the Villa Medici in Rome. He traveled to paint across Europe, primarily France and Italy and also Latin America. Like Picasso, Schiefer never permitted himself to be “type-cast” in a single monotonous style. If there is anything that typifies his work, it is his versatility, his deft handling of subdued tones to create a unique brilliance of light and color that stamps every painting with his own individuality. In February 1964, Ethel Kennedy...

ABOUT THE ARTIST "How to paint the landscape: First, you make your bow to the landscape. Then you wait, and if the landscape bows to you, then, and only then, can you paint the landscape." —John Marin “I would say to a person who thinks he wants to paint, go and look at the way a bird flies, a man walks, the sea moves. There are certain laws, certain formulae. You have to know them. They are nature's laws and you have to follow them just as nature follows them... You don't create the formulae... You see them." —John Marin, conversation with Dorothy Norman...

Sea of Clouds, Oil Painting

By Aruna Rao

Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Towering cumulus clouds drift overhead and provide shade to the beach below. The contrast between the monumental sky and the quiet human presence on the shore speaks to humans' small but significant place in the natural world. Painted with oil on canvas, this impressionist seascape evokes tranquility.

About the Artist
Artist Aruna Rao paints impressionistic seascapes that capture the shimmer of light, the movement of water, and the quiet poetry of coastal life. "I am endlessly inspired by how light transforms a scene, softening the atmosphere and turning an ordinary moment into something unforgettable," says Aruna. Growing up in a literary family in India, she was surrounded by stories and art, which sparked her love of narrative and visual expression. After a 20-year career in IT, she returned to painting, earning an MFA with top honors from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Living in Florida offers endless inspiration, from sunrise beaches and glowing horizons to quiet harbors and small human moments that evoke joy and nostalgia. Influenced by French Impressionists and contemporary coastal painters, Aruna creates luminous works that invite the viewer to pause, breathe, and rediscover the beauty of the present moment. When she is not painting, she enjoys beach walks, discovering music, watching films with her husband, and spending time with their two cats.

Words that describe this painting: cloudscape, cloud, beach, coast, shore, summer, Marc Hanson...
