BUCHOZ. A Group of Four Tulips
Located in London, GB
A Group of 4 hand-coloured engraved plates of tulips, in matching silver leaf frames. Dimensions: 34.6cm by 48.5cm. A fine group of these rare flower plates, the complete volume of 40 being part of Le Jardin d'Eden, which was intended as the supplement to the Collection des Fleurs de la Chine & de l'Europe, first published in 1776. [Paris 1781] The second half of the eighteenth century saw a boom in natural history publications in France fuelled by such works as Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle. The accession of Louis XVI in 1774 was followed by a relaxation in the regulation of the book trade making it easier for authors to publish their own works. No other writer was to take such copious advantage of these two developments as Pierre-Joseph Buchoz (1731-1807), a French physician, lawyer and naturalist. His works are characterised by the beauty of the illustrations, and their rarity owing to the small size of the print runs. The final tulip plate...

Charles Culver Landscape "Late Afternoon Landscape" Watercolor on Paper
Located in Detroit, MI
“Late Afternoon Landscape” is set in the golden light of evening painted in the mid-west town of Utica, Michigan. It has the atmosphere of when work is done and peace and quiet blanket the countryside. The The farm machinery has ceased its racket as has the family dog wandering about for one last sniff. This piece has been professionally reframed with acid-free matting and conservative glass. In a 1952 Detroit Free Press article, entitled “Artist Explains His Work,” Culver was asked why he painted the way he did. He stated: “I try to ‘see’ though not too exactly; I try to think though not too ponderously; I feel emotion yet I try not to become overwrought. I interpret rather than describe, and design rather than depict. I work with values, not light and shade; hence, when I am successful, I achieve substance rather than three-dimensional form, and this satisfies me as being wholly sufficient. In my work I wish to be serious without becoming a bore, exuberant without being frivolous, humorous without being silly. I believe that good paintings are conceived, not contrived; and I am interested in art much more than in pictures.” Charles Culver...

Gibbon Falls, Yellow-Stone National Park  is a chromolithograph from c.1880 showing two fisherman at the base of Gibbon Falls.  This chromolithograph is a dramatic view of the powerful Gibbon waterfall that cascades 84 feet into a small, clear pool. The setting is quintessential Yellowstone, with scrubby pine trees and rocky cliffs. The inscription on the bottom left corner below the image says Scenery From Nature on the Northern Pacific R.R.   Established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872  Yellowstone was the first national park in the U.S. and is widely held to be the first national park in the world. "Texan Lynx": An Original Audubon 19th Century Hand-Colored Quadruped Lithograph
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original 19th century John James Audubon hand-colored lithograph entitled "Texan Lynx", No. 19, Plate XCII, 92, from Audubon's "Quadrupeds of North America", printed and colored by J.T. Bowen and published in Philadelphia from 1849-1854. The lithograph depicts a Texan Lynx laying on the ground with hills in the background. This antique hand colored Audubon quadruped lithograph is presented with the original descriptive text pages 293-296 from Audubon's 19th century publication. The print is in excellent condition, including the striking hand coloring. John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a naturalist and artist. He was initially unsuccessful financially prior to the publication of his famous work “The Birds of America”, spending time in debtor’s prison, once stabbing a disgruntled investor in self-defense. However, his obsession with birds and art motivated him to persist in his goal of documenting every bird in America via his watercolor paintings and publishing his works for all to enjoy. Audubon's first illustrations were published in a large elephant folio size. Due to their expense they were purchased in rather small numbers by the wealthy. To reach a larger audience, Audubon, with the help of his sons and J. T. Bowen, published a smaller octavo sized lithograph version, which were much more affordable. With the success of his bird projects, Audubon then turned his attention to four-legged animals. He explored the Missouri River in 1843 sketching the four-legged animals he encountered in their natural setting. His expedition covered some of the same regions recently explored by Lewis and Clark, traveling from present day Alaska to Mexico. Audubon realized that this was an opportunity to document these animals in the still relatively pristine American wilderness, before man encroached on their environment. Between 1845 and 1848, Audubon and his sons John Woodhouse Audubon and Victor Gifford Audubon produced a set of elephant folio sized lithographs that were primarily engraved and hand colored by J. T. Bowen in Philadelphia. The publication, which included text descriptions of the animals was published 3 years before Audubon died. As with the birds, this was followed by a three-volume set of 155 octavo-sized plates entitled “The Quadrupeds of North America” completed and published by Audubon’s sons, John, Jr. and Victor. Audubon prints continue to be popular and a wise investment. The double elephant folio set...
