Post-Impressionist Art

POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE

In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.

The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.

The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.

The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

"Late Sun" - Carmel by the Sea California Original Oil French Impressionism Thick impasto and textured oil on linen circa 1962 by California artist Harry B. Lachman (American, 1886 - 1975). Besides being an American Impressionist, Harry was a honored French Impressionism artist as well. Lovely scene of Carmel by the Sea California of cottages and trees on a quiet lane. Some minor bowing of the canvas due to age and the heavy paints he used. Signed "Lachman" lower right Exhibited Dalzell Hatfield Galley, Beverly Hills 1959-1962 (partial Label on verso) Image, 18.25"H x 21.75"W Frame, 20.75"H x 24.5"W x 1"D A onetime magazine illustrator, Harry Lachman, born in LaSalle, Indiana June 29, 1886, became one of the leading European Post-Impressionist painters in the teens and twenties. By his late twenties, Lachman had established himself as an artist both in America and Europe. He exhibited in America at the National Academy of Design, New York, as well as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Early on in his career Lachman traveled to Europe to paint and eventually lived at various times in France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. In Europe, the painter's works were accepted at the annual Parisian Salons. Lachman worked as a set designer with the equally artistically-inclined film maker Rex Ingram...

French Village House Steps Garden Path and Hillside Landscape Watercolor

By Pierre Neveu

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Title: French Village House Steps Garden Path and Hillside Landscape Watercolor Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artists paper, unframed Size (H x W): 8.75 x 6.5 inches Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and minor natural toning consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This lyrical watercolor by Pierre Neveu captures a peaceful French village scene framed by a sunlit garden path, steps, and a cluster of traditional houses set against rolling hills. Neveu’s fluid brushwork and instinctive sense of colour bring instant warmth to the composition. Golden ochres, deep greens, and soft sky blues harmonise to create a vibrant yet intimate view of rural life in France. At the centre of the composition, a set of gently descending steps leads toward a small white house with a sharply peaked roof—one of the characteristic architectural forms found in many historic French villages. Surrounding it, Neveu uses expressive, loosely applied washes to depict dense foliage, casting natural shadows across the walkway. The vegetation, built from layered greens, ochres, and deep blue-greys, frames the scene beautifully and adds depth to the composition. Beyond the houses, the distant hillside glows with warm, earthy tones—suggesting late summer or early autumn light spreading across the fields. Neveu’s characteristic blend of linework and transparency gives the painting a sense of immediacy, as though capturing a moment during a quiet stroll through a village lane. His architectural training subtly informs the structure of the houses, even as the overall work maintains an impressionistic softness. Perfect for collectors of European village landscapes...
