Abstract Color Field Lithograph in Pale Blue and Brown

Abstract Color Field Lithograph in Pale Blue and Brown

Located in Soquel, CA

Abstract Color Field Lithograph in Pale Blue and Brown by American Beat artist Will Peterson (1928-1994.) This lithograph blends the linework and movement of abstract impressionism with a color field-esque composition. A long copper-brown rectangle shines through from the bottom layer of the colors. It is then crossed in multiple places by black linework and hatching. Around this shape a pale cornflower blue acts as a frame and crosses the brown shape in the center. The addition of the cool black and blue tones creates a sense of warmth in the underlying shape. Lithograph is printed on wove paper which is fixed to a larger piece of handmade paper containing the artists signature and a small embossing found on his other pieces from this time period. This paper is displayed on top of a linen covered board with sturdy wood edges and a plexiglass over over the entire piece. Will Peterson was born in Chicago in 1928 to German immigrant parents. He contracted Polio when he was in High School and thus spent much of his early years ill. During this time he started working as a cartoonist for his high school’s paper. He started his official art studies at Wilber Wright College in Chicago and later earned a BA and a MA at Michigan State University. Here he studied print making and lithography under John S. deMartelly. He began enjoying artistic success while still in graduate school, exhibiting at the Detroit Art Institute, the Terry Art Institute, the National Print Exhibition, and the Boston Printmakers. Peterson was drafted into the army in 1952 and thus spent time in Korea and Japan. His time as an educational specialist in Hokkaido was a formative experience for him and his interest in Japanese calligraphy and other arts influenced his later work. Upon returning to the United States, he moved to Oakland, California. He became involved with the beat movement and after founding the Bay Printmakers Society with fellow artist Mel Strawn...

The Garden of Eden Huge British Surrealist Oil Painting Reclining Nudes

By Richard Turner

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

The Garden of Eden by Richard Turner, British 1940-2013 signed and dated verso, 2003 oil painting on canvas, 48 x 36 inches A stylised surrealist landscape with two reclining nudes, and a seated woman and child. Signed, titled and dated 2003 verso. Painted on this huge size, the work makes a tremendous statement within an interior setting. Richard Turner's work is mainly figurative painting, within Arcadian landscape settings similar to the compositions in renaissance and mannerist art. Turneramon's first stay in Egypt had a significant effect on his painting style and content. His change from hard edge abstraction to synthetic renaissance is evident in his 5ft x 7ft painting; 'The Resurrection of Tutankhamen', leading to his work being labelled post modernist. Turner won the J. Andrew Lloyd scholarship for Landscape, enabling him to study at the Royal College of Art in London, from 1963. There, he was tutored by Carol Weight...

“The Gesturing Man”

By Benjamin Stahl

Located in Southampton, NY

Original watercolor on archival paper of a gesturing old man by the well known American artist Benjamin Stahl. Condition is very good. Two spots of foxing or staining to the left of the figure. Very slight wrinkling of paper. Otherwise, no other issues. Circa 1970. Gallery wide linen matted and framed with a thin silver leaf frame. Overall framed measurements are 19.5 by 20 inches. Provenance: A Nokomis, Florida collector. Ben Stahl Biography Born in Chicago in 1910, Ben Stahl was introduced to the world of art by his grandmother. She took him on visits to the Chicago Art Institute and other galleries beginning when he was six years old and continuing until he was fifteen. After these adventures she would buy him oilcloth, brushes, and paints, and he would create “masterpieces” on the front porch of the family home. Stahl also read voraciously, which did not translate into academic excellence. However, when he was in seventh grade, he received a scholarship to attend Saturday morning lectures at the Chicago Art Institute. He would spend his Saturday afternoons drawing live animals at the Lincoln Park Zoo and the stuffed variety at the Field Museum, honing his knowledge of animal anatomy. After high school, Stahl got a job as an apprentice at a commercial art studio. One of the partners, realizing Stahl was ambitious and talented, encouraged him to draw and paint to create a portfolio. It was the contents of this portfolio that landed him a job at Chicago’s most prestigious art studio. During his time there and at other studios, plus a stint as a journalist for the Chicago Daily News, Stahl continued to develop a unique style, influenced by the Impressionists, which he felt would carry the mood and the emotional impact of commercial illustrations. Ironically, Stahl’s first assignment for The Saturday Evening Post was to illustrate a sea story – this for an artist who had never seen either the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans! The editors liked his work, and there followed four years of marine-themed assignments. Eventually Stahl asked for a change, so his next assignment was set in the desert – which he had also never seen. He was being noticed, however, and eventually he decided to move to New York and become a freelance illustrator. He illustrated over 750 stories for the Post along with a number of other magazines, and he continued to explore new approaches in his easel painting. In 1951, Stahl was commissioned to paint "The 14 Stations of the Cross...

Untitled ("Motion-Sound" Landscape)

Untitled ("Motion-Sound" Landscape)

By Ralph Eugene Meatyard

Located in New York, NY

From a portfolio of ten gelatin silver prints from original Meatyard negatives (1959-71) Printed April 1974 Edition of 130 Credit stamp, verso 7 x 7 inches, image 15 x 12 inches, mount This artwork is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. “Meatyard searched continually for a non-objective art that would be wordless poetry, spontaneous music without sound. The ‘Motion-Sound’ pictures of his later years brought Meatyard’s passion for music and, paradoxically, the silence of Zen Buddhism together in photography. In creating the series, he focused the camera on a natural scene (or one containing plain rural architecture) and then moved it slightly. The result of this action is an image that suggests sound while abstracting natural forms. The landscapes of the ‘Motion-Sound’ series are in stark contrast to the evocative, more traditional views of the Red River Gorge that Meatyard was executing during the same years.” —Judith Keller, Ralph Eugene Meatyard (London: Phaidon Press Limited, 2002), p. 122 An optician by trade, Ralph Eugene Meatyard was a self-described “dedicated amateur” photographer. He pursued his own vision to produce an exquisitely enigmatic, widely admired body of work. Meatyard began taking photographs in 1950, roaming the backwoods and towns in Kentucky, experimenting with framing, multiple exposures, and blurring to produce haunting, abstracted images of natural and manmade environments. In the late 1950s, he began incorporating monstrous, oversized latex masks...
