Mid Century Post-Impressionist Still Life with Shoes and Flowers, Spanish Oil

By Carmen Espel

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Mid Century Post-Impressionist Still Life with Shoes and Flowers, Spanish Oil on Paper, Framed, c.1980 Artist: Carmen Espel (b. 1926, Spanish) Title: Untitled (Still Life with Shoes and Flowers) Date: circa 1980 Medium: Oil on paper Dimensions (image): Height: 70 cm (27.56 in) Width: 50 cm (19.69 in) Frame dimensions: Height: 75 cm (29.53 in) Width: 55 cm (21.65 in) Condition: Good overall condition. Minor signs of age consistent with medium and period. Paper stable. Colors remain vivid and well preserved. Frame: Original wooden frame included Style: Post-Impressionist Period: Late 20th Century (1980–1989) Origin: Spain A bold and characterful post-impressionist still life that plays with contrast, texture, and narrative. At first glance, it’s a simple composition: a pair of worn shoes, a ceramic pot with vivid flowers, and a glass bottle. But the execution transforms the scene into something far more engaging. The brushwork is energetic, almost tactile, and the color palette—rich reds, deep greens, and earthy browns—creates a strong visual rhythm. There’s a subtle tension here: elegance versus use, beauty versus everyday life. The shoes feel lived-in, the flowers freshly alive, the bottle quietly observing. It’s not just a still life—it’s a moment suspended between presence and absence. From a collector’s standpoint, figurative still lifes with personality and strong color contrast perform consistently well, especially when they include relatable objects and a decorative yet expressive quality. This is a piece that adds warmth, story, and visual interest to a space without being predictable. Carmen Espel (born 1926, Barcelona) is a Spanish painter associated with post-impressionist tendencies. A disciple of Ramón Sanvisens and Teresa Llàcer, she developed a vibrant and expressive style focused on landscapes, still lifes, and floral compositions. Her work is characterized by strong color contrasts and a confident, gestural brushstroke rooted in the Catalan artistic tradition of the late 20th century. Still life painting...

Richard Turner Garden of Eden Figurative Surrealist Oil Painting

By Richard Turner

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Title Richard Turner Garden of Eden Figurative Surrealist Oil Painting Key Details Artist: Richard Turner (British, 1940–2013) Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 48 x 36 inches Provenance: Not specified Condition: Very good condition Signature / Inscription: Signed, titled, and dated verso (2003) Description A large-scale figurative composition set within a stylised, almost dreamlike landscape. Three female figures are arranged across the foreground, two reclining and one seated with a child, their forms simplified and outlined against a richly coloured setting of foliage, water, and distant forms. Turner uses a heightened palette of greens, reds, and soft blues, creating a scene that feels both familiar and slightly removed from reality. The composition carries a narrative quality, with references to classical themes reinterpreted through a more contemporary lens. The scale gives the painting a strong presence, making it well suited to a principal room such as a sitting room or larger bedroom. It works particularly well in interiors where art is used as a focal point, with enough space to allow the composition to be viewed fully. The colour and subject lend warmth and depth, especially in settings that favour layered, characterful pieces rather than minimal decoration. Turner’s work often draws on Renaissance and Arcadian traditions, but shifts them into a more stylised and personal language. This painting reflects that balance, combining structured figuration with a more fluid, imaginative setting. It sits comfortably within a collection that values narrative, symbolism, and a slightly unconventional approach to classical themes. Artist Note Richard Turner studied at the Royal College of Art under Carol Weight...

Large Colorful 1980s New York Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting Joan Thorne

By Joan Thorne

Located in Surfside, FL

This is a large colorful, bold, vibrant original oil painting on canvas, hand signed and dated 1989. It is titled Crete. Joan Thorne (1943-) is a New York artist nationally and internationally recognized. A third generation Abstract Expressionist woman artist who has exhibited works over the past 30 years. Her art has been shown in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, the Whitney Museum’s Annual Exhibition, the Grand Palais in Paris, and Barbara Rose’s seminal exhibition American Painting: The Eighties at New York University’s Grey Gallery. Her recent shows in New York City have been reviewed by the New York Times, Art in America, ArtNews and The New Criterion among others. Her work has been compared to Elizabeth Murray work. It is colorful and has a 1980's, Memphis Milano feel to it. Thorne grew up in Greenwich Village. Her mother was a Ukrainian immigrant from a musical family, who became an English teacher; her father, a surgeon. Recognizing their daughter’s artistic talents early, they enrolled her at age six in the Little Red Schoolhouse on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. Founded in 1921 by Elisabeth Irwin, a pioneer in educational reform, the school has continued to maintain its reputation as a progressive and nurturing catalyst for creative children. Pete Seeger, the folk singer, performed there so frequently that Thorne remembered him as if he were one of the teachers. In 1971, Thorne met Faith Ringgold (b. 1930) and joined her as a teacher at the Women’s House of Detention on Rikers Island in a new program called “Art without Walls–Free Space.” The program, which had been born from the civil rights movement, was aimed at enriching the lives of the inmates. Thorne and her peers came of age struggling against sexism in the art establishment and its attendant lack of exhibition opportunities for women. Since 1985, this issue had been loudly exposed by the public protests of the Guerrilla Girls, whose members remain a well-kept secret. Her painting has been included in two Whitney Museum Biennials and various other museum group exhibitions both in the United States, Europe and Latin America. She has had numerous one person shows in galleries such as: Sideshow Gallery New York, Fischbach Gallery, New York City, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Willard Gallery, New York, Graham & Sons Gallery, New York, The Clocktower, New York City, and the National Arts Club among others. Thorne has been awarded the Prix de Rome Fellowship to paint at the American Academy in Rome. She also received two National Endowment grants for painting and two Pollock Krasner Grants among others. "Since 1973, while myriad styles, movements and mediums have flourished briefly in turn, Joan Thorne has steadfastly developed one visual language-that of painterly surface, light, color and distilled form-which she finds best suited for her artistic project: intimating dreams. intuitions and the psychic consequences of travel. " "For there is something luxuriant and mysterious in Thorne's compositions. They have a classic modernist genealogy that encompasses Arthur Dove, Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Milton Avery and Mark Tobey; yet each carries a hint of exoticism, " --Richard Vine, Art In America, Review, June 1998 Education Hunter College, New York, M.A. New York University, New York, B.S. Stable paint layer and firm support Style: Post-Impressionist Subject: Landscape with lake reflections Vibrant post-impressionist landscape depicting a tranquil lake surrounded by trees and houses, animated by strong color contrasts and luminous reflections on the water. The composition is built through expressive brushwork and a lively palette of yellows, greens, blues and violet tones that give the painting a dynamic yet harmonious atmosphere. The reflective surface of the lake creates depth while guiding the viewer’s eye through the landscape. Paintings featuring water reflections and bright natural color are particularly appealing for collectors and interior designers because they bring light, movement and decorative strength to an interior space. With its balanced format, vivid palette and ready-to-hang framed presentation, this original oil painting offers both decorative impact and the charm of expressive European landscape painting. Rafael Durán Benet was a Spanish painter known for his expressive landscapes and post-impressionist approach to color. His work frequently focused on natural settings, light effects and water reflections, combining energetic brushwork with a bright and decorative palette. His paintings are appreciated by collectors of modern Spanish figurative art for their atmospheric character and visual vitality. Richard Turner Two Ladies Arcadian Landscape Figurative Oil Painting

By Richard Turner

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Title Richard Turner Two Ladies Arcadian Landscape Figurative Oil Painting Key Details Artist: Richard Turner (British, 1940–2013) Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 20 x 24 inches Provenance: Not specified Condition: Very good condition Signature / Inscription: Signed, titled, and dated verso (2010) Description A figurative composition set within an Arcadian landscape, depicting two seated women arranged in a relaxed, intertwined pose. Turner simplifies the forms with a stylised approach, using bold outlines and flattened areas of colour to build the figures against a dreamlike backdrop of trees and water. The palette is bright and deliberately heightened, with warm yellows and reds set against cooler blues and greens, creating a sense of warmth and stillness within the scene. The composition has a decorative clarity that allows it to sit comfortably in a range of interiors. Its scale makes it well suited to a sitting room or bedroom, where the subject can be appreciated without overwhelming the space. The strong colour relationships work particularly well in interiors that favour art as a focal point, especially when paired with simpler furnishings that allow the painting to carry the visual interest. Turner’s work often draws on classical and Renaissance influences, reinterpreted through a more contemporary, postmodern lens. There is a quiet confidence in the way the figures are arranged, balancing narrative and form without overcomplication. Pieces such as this tend to appeal to collectors drawn to figurative work that sits slightly outside of strict tradition, offering something both familiar and distinct. Artist Note Richard Turner studied at the Royal College of Art in London, where he was taught by Carol Weight...
