Brown patinated bronze with rectangular cast plinth on a green marble base (3 cm high), total height with hinge 37 cm, width 9 cm, depth 8 cm, weight 2.9 kg, signed “Lavergne” on the plinth. - Base with old drilling and a few oxidized areas, patina occasionally rubbed, somewhat stained in the folds. - Full of anticipation - This bronze is the larger, highly detailed version of the fisherman that made Parisian artist Adolphe Jean Lavergne famous. In preparation for fishing, the boy prepares his rod before heading out to sea. The attachment of the iron ring and the rope behind him suggest a quay wall and a boat moored there. However, the depiction is entirely focused on the actual action of the young fisherman: With equal skill and concentration, he bends a hook to connect it to the fishing line. The contrast with his casual clothing, the loose-fitting trousers, the open shirt with its "wild" folds, and, last but not least, the sun hat boldly perched on his neck, reinforces the impression of the attentive care with which he goes about his work. His gaze makes him appear absorbed, as if he has forgotten the world around him and yet he is visibly filled with anticipation of fishing. John Speed/Speede (1551/2-1629) The County of Surrey Described and Divided into Hundreds Engraving with later hand colouring and text to the reverse.  Dated to c.1650 36 x 49 cm Probably the most famous early English mapmaker, John Speed's early life is somewhat of an enigma. He is believed to have trained as a rolling-press printer, but he was at heart an historian granted a sinecure in the Customs House by Queen Elizabeth to indulge his passion, later becoming a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. His first maps were historical, of the Holy Land 'Canaan as it was Possessed both in Abraham and Israels Dayes' and of England and Ireland recording 'all their Civill Warres since the Conquest'. In 1611 he published his 'Hostory of Great Britaine' which he regarded as his magnum opus, but it was the companion atlas 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine' that - as the first printed atlas of Great Britain - sealed his reputation. William Rogers engraved the first map, 'the County Palatine of Chester' in about 1600, but following his untimely death the task of engraving was passed to Jodocus Hondius of Amsterdam. By 1612 the atlas was complete, the maps famed for their decorative elements. Many have town plans - Britain's first series of such plans - and descriptive text was printed to the reverse until the 1676 edition. Later printings (up until 1770) were issued without this text. By 1627 it has become a part of a world atlas 'Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World'. During the 17th century the plates passed through the hands of a series of publishers, the 1676 edition of Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell being regarded as its high point with the inclusion for the first time of a series of important maps. For the first half of the eighteenth century they were firmly established in the hands of the Overton family. At the age of 12, he left the school to help his father, cooper. At 15 years old, he studied at the Art college of Marseille. He took evening drawing teachings, and then was interested in sculpture until 1939. In 1942, César received a scholarship and went to Paris. He studied ten years at the School of Beaux-Arts; he worked in the studios of Gaumont and Alfred Jeanniot and was named “Grand Massier” (teacher) of this school. At that time, he was living in the same house as Alberto Giacometti. In 1944, short of resources, he went to Marseille, then return to Paris, next year. With the 50s, he made discovered his work through his first exhibitions. One of its works (« The fish ») obtained a place in the Museum of Modern Art in Paris (1955). Henceforth, he exhibited ceaselessly, participating in numerous “Salons” in France and abroad. César received numerous prices there. He got personal exhibitions everywhere (Japan, the United States, Holland, France, Italy, etc.). Important retrospectives came, later. In 1970, he was named professor a foreman to the School of Beaux-Arts in Paris. During his all life, Caesar was stimulated by « the love of the profession » and by an extraordinary will to innovate.
